Best Battles in New Comics: 8/15/14

Check out awesome action scenes from the latest issues of ORIGINAL SIN, CAPTAIN AMERICA, and TMNT.

From Batgirl attacking Jason Todd to Punisher taking on Ghost Rider, the latest round of new comics dished out a ton of action scenes. We all have our favorites, but after reviewing the wide variety of battles, we've decided to highlight two brawls from Marvel and one melee from IDW. As always, you're welcome to praise your top battle from this week's new comics in the comments below.

No Caption Provided

ORIGINAL SIN #7

Marvel's latest big event, ORIGINAL SIN, is almost over and writer Jason Aaron, artist Mike Deodato Jr, and colorist Frank Martin Jr's latest chapter is full of glorious action as Nick Fury -- armed to the teeth with alien tech -- takes on some of the publisher's biggest heroes. The location puts several of the heroes at a disadvantage -- especially when Fury's shooting at them like a mad man -- but even though the classic character has a sharp mind and impressive tech, he's quite outnumbered and it isn't long before they're able to get close and personal. But despite having Fury surrounded and restrained, they're unable to take him down and Fury frees himself with ease.

Few can withstand the might of Nick Fury's backhand.
Few can withstand the might of Nick Fury's backhand.

The tactical spy is embarrassing Earth's mightiest heroes, but he's yet to face Captain America! Now that he's literally swatted the others aside, the super-soldier takes action and attempts to reason with Fury. But this is nearing the conclusion of a big event! The time for reason has passed and now is the time for excitement, buildup, and big reveals. So, obviously a few words are exchanged and one heck of a punch is delivered. You didn't really expect them to solve this one without some punches, did you?

Mike Deodato's so kind to our eyes.
Mike Deodato's so kind to our eyes.

Let's take a moment to gaze at Deodato Jr and Martin Jr's panels. Not only is the setting a gorgeous sight to behold (you can really appreciate Fury's remark about the view), but, as expected, the character work is impressively detailed and packed with intensity. A big event should feel epic and these visuals definitely deliver on providing a stunning atmosphere. Now, let's get back to the fight. Hulk has been shot to the moon, many Avengers were smacked aside, and Cap took a vicious right hook. However, Fury isn't the only brilliant leader in this battle. Steve Rogers has a back-up plan: Thor. If Fury can't be reasoned with, he'll be smashed by the Son of Odin until he no longer poses a threat.

"Have at thee, old astronaut Fury!"

You know how people often joke that Batman can accomplish anything "because he's Batman"? Well, after this issue, we should probably start saying "because he's Nick Fury." Seriously, not only was he able to hold his own physically (against some, that is), but with just his words, he's able to humiliate two other very powerful Avengers. It's looking like "Nick Fury always win" may also be an appropriate saying! Seeing as this tale is written by Aaron -- the writer of THOR: GOD OF THUNDER -- you can bet it connects to the big changes that are heading to Thor's world. You can read more about that here.

CAPTAIN AMERICA #23

Steve Rogers survived Dimension Z, but a heavily armored and very skilled character from that world has come to 616 Earth and is looking for the iconic hero. Seeing as Rogers' super-soldier serum has been removed from him, his formidable friends step up to the plate in an attempt to prevent this individual from finding his target. After this mysterious character bypasses the Avengers Mansion's security, he effortlessly gets past Iron Man, too. Needless to say, writer Rick Remender is going above and beyond to show off this character's high level of skill. But how will this unknown being perform when he bumps into the God of Thunder?

It has been a rough week for Thor fans.
It has been a rough week for Thor fans.

Okay, apparently not even Thor was all that much of an obstacle for this dude from another dimension. Don't get too disappointed, Thor fans, because this combatant then encounters Iron Man a second time and once again makes him look like a total joke. Tony Stark fires multiple repulsor blasts but doesn't even scratch the guy. To make matters even more embarrassing, the graceful character politely taunts Iron Man as he exits the scene!

Looks like Stark needs to ask Hawkeye for some accuracy training.
Looks like Stark needs to ask Hawkeye for some accuracy training.

So, this nimble fellow has effortlessly eluded Iron Man twice and had no problem dancing around Thor's attacks and kicking him in the back of the head, but what about when he bumps into Hulk, the strongest one there is? Will the Green Goliath be the one to finally get his hands on this opponent and knock his lights out? Short answer: nope.

"HULK SWING AND MISS!"

Who is this character and why is he after Rogers? And what'll happen if he manages to reach the Avenger? If you've been following along, the answer to the first question is probably obvious, but the rest of the issue isn't about the reveal -- it's about what the reveal means and where they go from there. Oh, and seeing as you're likely a fellow action junkie, it's worth noting that the issue's battles aren't limited to just this scene in Avengers Mansion!

TMNT #37

The relationship between the Foot Clan and General Krang hasn't exactly been friendly (see SECRET HISTORY OF THE FOOT CLAN for more details) and tension continues to rise between these two sides. Hoping for a peaceful solution to this problem, Oroku Saki, a.k.a. Shredder, meets the alien and offers an alliance. The Utrom, however, has no interest in joining forces and takes the already heated dialogue in a violent direction. The alien underestimated his enemy, though, and Saki was prepared for the alien to attack. The Shredder attempts to flee, but his helicopter is shot down by Krang. The odds appear to be heavily stacked against the leader of the Foot clan, but Saki has lived for hundreds of years and is certainly no fool. He prepared for multiple scenarios and two of his mutated allies, Koya and Bludgeon, show up the to the scene and savagely assault Krang's forces. As the mutants and gunmen go at it, the two villainous leaders prepare to clash.

Are you on team Shredder or team Krang?
Are you on team Shredder or team Krang?

Technological might or praiseworthy skill? Will Krang's sheer strength and firepower prove to be more useful than Saki's graceful nature and talent with a blade? Writer Tom Waltz crafts a battle that gives both characters proper credit and the way artist Cory Smith and colorist Ronda Pattison bring it all to life is a ton of fun. To make matters even more appealing, we get to chime in on their minions going at it and it's all kind of hectic. We won't spoil how it all concludes, of course, but we will say the mutants are off to a strong start. Their leader, however, isn't as fortunate.

TMNT embraces Shark Week.
TMNT embraces Shark Week.

We left the next part out because, well, it's awesome and you need some incentive to actually buy the comic, yes? Let's just say Krang is fed up with this complication and has no problem going all out. If you've been reading the IDW series, then you know Shredder isn't just an ordinary guy and he's able to remain conscious after Krang's brutal attack. Waltz gave Krang a moment to unleash and show his formidably, so now it's time to see Oroku Saki do the same! Don't you just love a battle between villains where both a given a chance to shine and neither is downplayed?

Even if you're on team Krang, you must admit that was bossa nova.
Even if you're on team Krang, you must admit that was bossa nova.

Both have taken damage, but neither leader has fallen or refuses to quit. Shredder and Krang have joined forces or been connected in other incarnations, and it's crystal clear they're going to be anything but buddies in this universe. If the Ninja Turtles thought they were in a tough spot now, just imagine how they'll feel when they discover the two most dangerous groups are at war. How does this fight conclude, though? Well, you'll just have to read the issue to find out! It's a serviceable jumping on spot, so there's no good reason not to!

But if it doesn't end with an elderly Steve Rogers using his cane to beat up spiky-man, I'll be disappointed.

Damn spiky guy looks like the new Taskmaster what with the way he eluded the Avengers. But it really wasn't Thor's week given his embarrassing defeat and embarrassing loss of a certain hammer.

What was said above was the absolute truth: this has been a rough week for Thor fans. Bit of an understatement there, actually! Original Sin 7 is one of the first comics I've dropped out of my hands in sheer disgust. This mishandling of Thor in the latest Cap issue is just the icing on a cake made out of raw sewage. What is Marvel doing? Are they purposely trying to ruin Thor? Why would they want to ruin one of their heavy hitters, one of their most legendary & iconic characters? Do they not like the success he's been getting lately? A successful, hit series with Thor: God of Thunder, successful films & becoming a household name, even here in the US(he's already a household name & cultural icon in Scandinavian countries). And if so, then where is the sanity in that? Why would they not want to continue that success? This- this is just so mixed up a wrong, a slap in the face to the character & to all the fans. I just really dont know what's going through Marvel editorial's heads right now, but it should be shame- shame at the piss-poor treatment of an icon that been around for hundreds of years before Marvel's adaptation, & shame that they're disappointing long-time fans like me who've been they're through thick & thin. I feel like this is all done for that controversial media pandering, to make the way for a story just done for controversial pc BS, & that we longtime fans have become secondary to that. Not to mention the characters. It's a sad state of affairs when media attention is more important than telling a good story, honoring your characters & long-time fans. Thanks for that, Marvel. Now I know where your priorities are. Just know that he little PR boost won't last forever- & then what'll you have to depend on? Us, the fans who fell secondary to your media objective. And when that time comes, Marvel- & it will- maybe you'll not just appreciate the characters you have, but more importantly the fans that you've slighted, too.

I leave with this: this is for you Thor, & all the fans who know how awesome he is!!

@winter_kills: Dude, take a deep breath, and relax. It's not the end of the world for Thor, and he has been through much worse in the past, in comics and sadly in earlier TV adaptations. I'm going to keep reading Thor because I like the writer behind him, so I trust they'll do him justice. Also it's always nice to see a hero work their way back up. Part of what I liked about Superior Spider-man aside from the change and something new, was seeing Peter fight to get back on top and the journey he went to get there. Enjoy the ride.

Thank you, *sniff *wipes tear from eye... lol seriously though, I'm loosing a lot of respect for Marvel lately. I've always been more of a Marvel fan but it's so hard right now. First it was Daredevil with Mark Waid then they had to go and ruin my favorite superhero.. Uhhh it's alright. Batman Beyond 2.0 is just killin it right now. Best title out right now IMO

Yea I don't know what all the hate with Superior Spiderman is about. It was soooooooo freaking good near the end and it brought Spiderman 2099 into his own series again.. with Peter freaking David might I add!!

@winter_kills: Marvel Comics is so focused in headlines, and diversity, that don t realize, what Thor represents to his fans, when Marvel realize s that, the character will no longer have identity and personality, and fans will not connect with him again, I m losing my faith in Marvel comics.

We still got MCU and kevin Feige does not go with this stunts.

2. Thor Struggles to hit a Human and got blitz kicked to head.

3. THor Fighting skills is must be off because a kick to head / he actually felt it . Whats going on here .

4. I think Marvel is confirming what i said . If the hammer is lost or misses the beat down is going to be for sure :)

Well no but he doesn't look above street level. His kicks didn't seem to hurt Thor, he just outmanoeuvred him with superior speed, agility and skill. I'm going to guess that it's Steve's son from Dimension Z but if it's not, feel free to correct me. It doesn't change the fact that Thor is not a fast fighter at all.

@Tdk_1997: hes only human right? Man that sucks for huge thor fans. As a normal thor fan, it doesnt bother me much because its consistent and the editor in chief at marvel recently stated that he has super speed in travel but not so much in combat. Well, technically he should have said. Mjolnir is fast in travel since mjolnir is the one flying him thru space.

@spiderman1997: Thor hasn't been like that for,what,20 years? lol

Anyway,it's odd how the same old posters always love to compare DC and Marvel at every turn. I mean,f*cking seriously. If Thor gets punched,it's "HAHA LULZ THIS CONFIRMS IT! THOR GOT HURT BY CHARACTER X,AND SUPERMAN RECENTLY SHRUGGED OFF (blank)!"

It's rather....annoying. But hey,zealots will be zealots.
