Best Battles in New Comics: 10/17/14

Enjoy some great fight scenes from the latest issues of BATMAN AND ROBIN, MILES MORALES: THE ULTIMATE SPIDER-MAN, and EARTH 2: WORLD'S END.

Just one of the many appealing qualities of comic books is the fact that every week these superpowered and gifted beings will use their abilities in some pretty epic fights. Sure, we all love a good story arc and character development, but what's the point of making these characters exceptional fighters or giving them jaw-dropping powers if they aren't put to use every so often? Well, this is the place to be if you want to celebrate all of the madness that goes down as heroes and villains get into brawls.

We've reviewed most of this week's new action scenes -- as always, there's quite a few -- and we've picked 3 to praise. Once you're all set seeing what selected and why, visit the comments section and give your top fight scene some love. Now, let's dive right into the battles.

Don't worry, we avoid big spoilers.

BATMAN AND ROBIN #35

The first highlight comes from Peter Tomasi, Patrick Gleason, Mick Gray, and John Kalisz's latest chapter of Robin Rises. Glorious Godfrey has taken Damian's body back to Apokolips and, as completely expected, Bruce Wayne will stop at nothing to get his son back. But the guy can't just hop in his Batmobile, drive to Apokolips, punch some goons in the face and come back with his son. If he's going to this dangerous place, he needs to go above and beyond. Luckily for him, he has a fancy armor that the Justice League helped create. The Dark Knight has equipped this formidable armor and he's now bringing the fight to Apokolips. The time for talk has come to an end. Now it's time for Batman to generate a whole lot of onomatopoeias.

Predator's going to want another crossover fight after seeing this.

That's right, not only does Batman look really cool in his new armor and it offers him flight, but it can also cloak. That group of Parademons stood no chance and the art team did a killer job handling the aftermath. Everything from the wrecked goons to Batman's shadow is simply badass. Oh, and that's just the beginning. Want to see what else this armor can do? Dumb question, of course you do! Let's see what else his wings are capable of.

He shall now be called The Dark Nightmare.

Now, before you go all "Venom rip-off!" there's something that needs to be pointed out. Batman isn't just using those "tendrils" to smack his enemies around, he's incapacitating them with the attack. Sure, it looks like they're capable of blunt force and even suffocation, but what Batman's doing is immobilizing them by "draining and consuming" the cochleae in their inner ears. But yes, it does look a lot like Batman's wearing a symbiote, doesn't it? Anyway, now no one is standing the way of Batman and his target: Glorious Godfrey. This villain knows where Damian's body is, so you can bet Wayne's going to get a little rough with him.

As for what happens next, well, you'll just have to buy the issue to find out! Needless to say, it looks like there's still plenty of action to come and I imagine we're going to see even more of what this armor's capable of. Oh, and if we still had honorable mentions (long story short, we'd rather have you list your favorite fights than list every single good one at the end of the article), Titus vs. Cyborg would totally be there.

MILES MORALES: THE ULTIMATE SPIDER-MAN #6

The next highlight comes from Brian Michael Bendis, David Marquez, and Jiustin Ponsor. While the core of this issue is a more compelling story about the return of what could possibly be the real Peter Parker, Bendis finds a way to bring Norman Osborn back for yet another battle with Miles Morales. Instead of being afraid of the villain, Miles leaps into action with total confidence and begins the fight by ruining a perfectly good piece of furniture.

"Borrow" that couch? I do not think it means what you think it means, Miles.

The last time Miles and Green Goblin fought, the young hero wasn't entirely sure what he could and couldn't get away with. It was a difficult fight that really pushed him, but now that he's already battled this egotistical fool, he knows exactly how to handle the situation. No longer is going for a lot of blunt force and dodging. He's tried that and it didn't go all that well. Now he's getting in close and putting his venom blasts to good use. Why punch and kick to no avail when you can harm your foe with a simple touch?

Miles refuses to respect his elders.

Bendis scripts a hugely amusing fight and the visuals do it plenty of justice. The layouts and angles do a terrific job selling the impact and motion behind each attack and the effects from both characters are delightfully vivid. All in all, it's an awesome fight and most definitely deserves being in latest edition of this segment.

Norman quickly goes from savage powerhouse to arrogant punching bag.

If you want all of the important stuff about the plot -- you know, discussion about whether that's really the Peter Parker -- we strongly recommend getting this issue. The brawl with Norman's just a really fun way to end it and it's nice seeing Morales acting with such confidence. And the way he celebrates once it's over? Yeah, it'll likely make you smile.

EARTH 2: WORLD'S END #2

Our final highlight comes from the latest action-packed issue of EARTH 2: WORLD'S END. We usually list the writers and artists, but there's a big team working on this one and it would take up the whole paragraph, so click here for all of that info. This issue begins with someone named K'li standing before 6 formidable heroes: Red Tornado, Batman, Huntress, Power Girl, Green Lantern and Val-Zod. It would seem like the odds are heavily in their favor, but the villain from Apokolips swiftly proves otherwise.

When someone says a fight was a
When someone says a fight was a "total stomp" it likely went a lot like this.

So much for the numbers advantage. I'd say K'il has earned the name "War" after a showing like that. She's facing a plethora of characters with different skillsets and powers, yet she walked all over them without even breaking a sweat. As if she wasn't a big enough obstacle on her own, War also has Parademons on her side. Luckily for the heroes, they have no problem smacking those around. War, though? Good luck with that one, heroes.

Batman beat up SO MANY Parademons this week.

It's unclear how the fight would go if all of the heroes kept their focus on War, but unfortunately for them, that's not what happens. Threats are popping up all over the planet, so Green Lantern has to go be a hero elsewhere. It's too bad because his teammates could really use the help. Even though this group has so many different abilities, this opponent is just too skilled for them to handle. This is more one-sided than Miles Morales vs. Green Goblin!

When she reaches Batman she says,
When she reaches Batman she says, "Too awesome to describe with just one word."

Does another character swoop in and save the day? Does Batman find a way to win? Does the new Kryptonian character overcome the odds and take down War? Or are things about to get a whole lot worse for the heroes? We won't spoil the cliffhanger, but we will say it concludes with the promise of even more action.
