Best Battles in New Comics: 05/10/13

This week we feature fights from BATMAN & RED HOOD, SUPERBOY and DEATHSTROKE!

DC obliterated the competition this week, earning all three spots in this feature. That said, the other publishers certainly weren't slacking. They had some great action scenes and, as you'll see, the honorable mentions section is packed with quite a few rather awesome options. But enough babbling! Let's dive right into the brawls.

Bruce Wayne vs. Jason Todd

What seemed like a legitimate bonding experience between the two was shattered when Bruce revealed his ulterior motive: it was all about bringing Damian back, not spending quality time with the second Robin. Bruce 'Buzzkill' Wayne strikes again. Todd just wanted to enjoy connecting with Bruce and feeling like a part of the family again as they took down mercenaries. Instead, he was heartbroken to find out Wayne was using him when he took him to the site of his brutal demise. Batman was hoping Todd could remember how he came back and maybe -- just maybe -- that could help him revive his son. Needless to say, Todd didn't take too kindly to it and fists began to fly. You done goofed up, Bruce!

Holy emotions, Batman!
Holy emotions, Batman!

Now, if you've been reading the entire issue, that "Because I want to watch Damian grow up, damn it!" delivered some heavy feels -- and that's exactly what I've come to expect from BATMAN AND ROBIN. Sure, the series hit a rough patch in the middle, but it's been back on track and consistently proving it's one of the best Bat-books on the market. It's such a shame that right as Todd is easing his way back into the family he's hit with a moment like this one. But hey, hopefully it'll generate some fascinating stories over in RED HOOD AND THE OUTLAWS.

STOP TRYING TO HIT ME AND HIT ME!
STOP TRYING TO HIT ME AND HIT ME!

The cover had me concerned Bruce would take his anger out on Todd, but the fight takes a turn and it's clear Batman's taking it out on himself. There's no doubt Bruce could wreck Todd if he wanted to -- but he doesn't want to. Instead, he feels like he deserves punishment for what happened to his son, and I can't blame the poor guy.

Chill, Batfans. Wayne is letting Todd get the hits in.
Chill, Batfans. Wayne is letting Todd get the hits in.

I know Scott Snyder and Greg Capullo are doing great stuff with the main title, but Peter J. Tomasi and Patrick Gleason (though he's not on art duties above) have turned BATMAN AND ROBIN into my favorite Bat-book.

Superboy vs. Dreadnought

When The New 52 first hit, I did my best to give a majority of the books an honest shot. SUPERBOY was part of that, but in time I decided to drop it. However, now that Justin Jordan is on the book (Luther Strode, y'all), I simply had to give it a chance. While I don't find myself completely drawn into the book yet, there's no denying that it had quite a sweet fight. It's time for Superboy to battle in the streets with a big ol' purple monster named Dreadnought. As you can see from the first image, it's not going that well for our protagonist.

Dreadnought's
Dreadnought's "fist bump" is maxed out.

The longer Superboy stays in the fight, the more powerful his opponent becomes. Superboy aims to swiftly drop his opponent, but the massive creature pulls a combo breaker and once again shifts the odds in his favor. In the meantime, enjoy a scan of Superboy turning the tide -- even if it's just for a moment.

4 hit combo! 9% damage!
4 hit combo! 9% damage!

This segment usually has a focus on street level battles, but every now and then it's nice to sit back and enjoy a battle between powerhouses. I mean, just look at the scan below. Slamming Superboy is destroying the freaking surface!

I'd have the same expression on my face if I was getting destroyed by a big purple monster with horns, too.
I'd have the same expression on my face if I was getting destroyed by a big purple monster with horns, too.

If you want to know who wins and how it concludes, pick up Jordan's first issue on the book!

Deathstroke vs. Jericho/Terra/Majestic/Ravager

Stop hogging the spotlight, Justin Jordan! Jordan is just starting his tale over in SUPERBOY, but he was also wrapping everything up over in the pages of DEATHSTROKE with co-writer Tony Bedard. It's a family reunion like no other as Jericho takes control of Majestic and tries to kill his father. Ravager weakens the powerhouse and Terra holds him in place, but that just ain't going to cut it against someone on his level.

You coulda broke out earlier and not wrecked her favorite sword, jerk.
You coulda broke out earlier and not wrecked her favorite sword, jerk.

Rose may not have any luck keeping Majestic down for the count, but Slade's got no problem with making the heavy hitter count sheep. It hasn't been a good day for Majestic, has it? First he gets hit in the face with a nuke, next he gets teamed-up on and smacked in the back of the head with some rubble. Certainly not one of his finest moments.

When it comes to Godlike characters, there's no shame in a cheap shot.
When it comes to Godlike characters, there's no shame in a cheap shot.

Jericho's lost control of Majestic, but everyone else (Slade and Rose aside) is still at his disposal. First up, he takes over Terra and launches her at Slade. Unfortunately for Terra, she's not even a minor obstacle and the mercenary takes her out with a single palm punch. ONE PUNCH! ONE PUNCH!

Just in case you ever wondered how Deathstroke vs. Terra would turn out...
Just in case you ever wondered how Deathstroke vs. Terra would turn out...

The only people left standing are Deathstroke and his three children. What happens next... man, I can't ruin it. It's one helluva finale, so shell out the cash if you're interested.

I have a question. I haven't been reading Superboy but I want to try Superboy #20. Would I understand Superboy #20 without reading #1 to #19?

Hopefully Jason finally realizes his path is not with Batman!

Maybe. However, i always saw Jason eventually siding with Bruce after he works out his differences. We've already seen Jason go off on his own in the past, it'd be nice to see him actually join Batman.

I hate what DC has done to Majestros a earthling now anybody can possess him(Jericho) and beat him? Come on they can never do that to superman. I hope they have better plan for him. I almost wish Majestic was in storwatch team so Jim Starlin could change his origins but Starlin too is a killer of characters so i'm afraid on what is going to happen to Stormwatch

@thejman251: Did you ever stop to think that Bruce was just lying to himself and to Alfred? Putting on a show (or a mask) to hide what's really inside (he's kind of infamous for doing that.) It sounded a lot like someone saying something out loud to try and rationalize it to their self. "I'm just fine, I swear." It's a defense mechanism, and Bruce is in denial.

Besides, you're definitely over-reacting and being pretty damn cynical of an amazing writer who's had nothing but praise from every critic recently for his work on this book.

Also, why are you worrying about inconsistencies between different titles!? That's just ridiculous! It's comic books and it happens all the time. Would you rather have every book be written by the same person? That's the only way to prevent inconsistencies.

Lastly, why are you blaming Tomasi and not Snyder? Who's to say that Snyder's Batman isn't inconsistent with Tomasi's Batman? I read Batman and Red Hood before I read Batman this week, so it was that panel (Bruce and Alfred in the Batcave at the end of Batman #20) that you posted that actually seemed to be the inconsistent one to me (especially considering that Snyder knows about Tomasi's current "5 stages of grief" arc.)

- Yes, bruce was lying to himself and Alfred. I suppose you're one of those people who thinks that the character is lying whenever they say something that you don't like, or that you can't deal with.

- You can make as much excuses as you want. It sounds like Tomasi needs to get his drivel together.

- I'm definitely overreacting? No, that's just your opinion.

- Gee, i don't know. Probably because these titles are all Batman titles. You must be incredibly ignorant if you didn't know that people brought up complaints about inconsistencies all the time. Go see Morrison's current Batman Inc. Yes, continue to make excuses for Tomasi. You're staring to sound quite similar to a fanboy.

- Actually, a large amount of inconsistencies can easily be prevented by simple communication. Common sense.

- Oh really? So all of Snyder's Lobdell's John's Batman are at fault here while Tomasi is completely innocent ? I this a joke? You must be a Tomasi fanboy.

- Tomasi's nonsense seems to be severely inconsistent with all other incarnations of Batman right now, save INC. I think Tomasi needs to get his drivel together instead of writing a Bruce that is severely more insane than usual, and is burning all of his bridges like firewood.

@thejman251: You can't be serious...

You're irrationality is incomprehensible. I can't even.....jeezus you're dumb. You didn't even have one valid counterpoint in that entire rant. Everything was baseless assumptions and failed misdirection.

You REALLY can't be serious about that last part either. Snyder's Batman and Johns' Batman are polar opposites. Tomasi isn't the only one being inconsistent....THEY ALL ARE! Give me one good reason as to why Tomasi's Batman is the inconsistent one. What makes his Batman any less "real" than the others?

- Yes, my opinion is "dumb". As if i would care what some Tomasi fanboy thought.

- You haven't presented me with anything i need to counter sir. As if your post was logical in the least. The only thing that amounted from your post was "my opinion was right! yours is wrong!,etc" and other similar drivel.

- Oh and, you are clearly illiterate as i responded to your drivel line by line for the most part.

- However, i suppose that what i'm hearing now is the typical fanboy irrationality that is a result of the fanboy's favorite character/author/etc being critiqued.

- Yes, Snyder's Batman:

No Caption Provided

- John's Batman:

No Caption Provided

- Anyone with half a brain who isn't blinded by inane fanboyism (I.E. yourself), can easily see that these two interpretations of Batman are similar in certain ways. I don't see any " polar opposite" qualities here.

- Now, lets look at the inconsistency with Tomasi's Batman.

No Caption Provided

- If you don't see the inconsistencies that are as clear as day, then there is no point in speaking to someone like you.

- Additionally, you are clearly an immature fanboyish child who, evidently, can't handle the fact that someone has opinions that are not the same as yours, or opinions that you do not like. Honestly, the only thing that i see coming out of this "conversation" are more comments such as "your dumb!", "you're being unreasonable ", "i'm right, you're wrong! your opinion is wrong!" from the likes of you, and that is honestly a waste of my time.

@thejman251: I find it funny that you keep calling me a fanboy when clearly the only reason your panties are in a bunch is because you are a Jason Todd fanboy. Anyone who's actually been reading Justice League and Batman would know that Johns constantly writes Batman as a useless jerk who brings nothing to the table, and is constantly made fun of by other members of the Justice League ("wait...you're not just some guy dressed up in a bat-costume are you!?")

I'm just gonna leave these here:

Snyder's Batman
Snyder's Batman
Tomasi's Batman
Tomasi's Batman

Looks pretty consistent to me...

- Oh, is that so? Then i suppose the only reason that your "panties" are in a bunch over my "panties being in a bunch" are because you are a tomasi fanboy. Typical fanboy response, call the accuser a fanboy of something else.

- Oh, and being concerned with a character means that i'm a fanboy. The typical ignorance and idiocy of the internet.

- Yes, because i'm speaking about most of the time, and not about the specific period of time after Damian's death. (obvious sarcasm if you're even aware of the definition of the word "sarcasm")

- Basically, what i am gathering from your inane post is that you have nothing to say besides posing irrelevant pictures of when Damian was still alive , when the topic of conversation is clearly about what takes place after his death. Anyone with common sense would realize this however, it's evident that fanboys usually do not use common sense.

- Here's a hint: stop quoting me with your drivel as you clearly don't have anything worthwhile to say, and you don't even have the brain capacity to stay on topic.

2) "combo breaker" lololololol

3) how the hell does Majestik even get in the (main) D.C. storyline? Isn't he a WildC.A..T.?

- The thing is that Snyder knew full well what Morrison was going to do well before he wrote DOTF. Therefore, he gets no sympathy from me for writing such a story.

- I am curious to see what Zero year will entail though.

@guardiandevil83: I'm saying Deathstroke doesn't get so teary over his children. Batman's praised as a level headed fighting machine. Trust me, a few years later, this "New 52" is not gonna look like a great idea. I prefer old (not too old) stuff. I love Jim Lee's art and costume designs on the JLA. Some of the new takes on old characters are nice, but I do not appreciate DC re-doing their histories for their own convenience. Sure, if some of their characters have a lot of mistakes, you gotta modify them to seem more plausible. But I get tired of keeping track.

@sweatboy: I get what your saying about Bruce, but look at it this way. Despite being one of the most Powerful humans on the planet, he still is human, as such he may be entitled to bouts of anger, fear, ect. Even Ras al Ghaul has made the mistake of wearing his emotions far to clearly. Shiva has experienced fear provided by the hands of her own daughter, arrogasnce being also a factor for her defeat against Cassandra during their last fight. All chracters at occasion show flaws in their normally focused personalities. As for the new 52. Having mostly sided with image and Marvel over the years, the inclusion of Wildstorm Chracters is what bought me aboard. Seeing you true DC fans get shafted just to increase sales kind of makes me feel bad lol. I can feel ya, that would be to me, like changing Marvel to the point I no longer reqognize my favorite chracters. Then tossing in the Star Wars verse, mixed with Naruto, just because its ''cool'' and brings more chracters, which should bring in more money, ironically not, due to too many unnessary changes. Like making the Hulk weak enough to be beaten by Taskmaster or some dumb ish. So I understand. lol

@guardiandevil83: Don't get me wrong, i LOVE the Wild C.A.T.S, mostly Grifter and Zealot. Like i said i love Jim Lee art. As in, it's what i LIVE fore, Jim Lee art and some Rob Liefield art (when it comes to the X-Men, sometimes i can't those two artists apart) Image is great, i love Savage Dragon, in fact i'm thinking about writing about why i like him. I haven't read all his comics though.
As for Batman,... the fandom is so overrated. I guess it's not that i hate Batman himself. I might even be able to relate to him on certain things. But i like Jensen Ackles' line in the Red Hood movie, "You're not what this city needs, I am" (or some shit like that) I guess original Batman's a little more appealing.

No. I clearly meant every single Batman fan.

Or, Bat-fans who are too lazy to read the conext, and based on reactions I've seen thus far (both here and in other threads), it's transparent a lot have.
