Bendis Confirms MOON KNIGHT Ending With Issue #12

The April, 2012 issue of MOON KNIGHT will be the final of the series.

If you read the solicits for Marvel's MOON KNIGHT recently then you may have caught a hint at the fact that issue #12 of the series will be the finale for both the series' headliners, writer Brian Michael Bendis and artist Alex Maleev. Some fans hoped that just because the two comic creators were leaving the book, did not mean the series would be coming to an end. Unfortunately, that was not to be.

MOON KNIGHT #11
MOON KNIGHT #11

The news came earlier today from Bendis himself who revealed both he and Maleev would not only be leaving the series following MOON KNIGHT #12, but that no other creative team would be taking it over. That's right. The Moon Knight series is officially coming to an end.

Look at it as a 12 issue maxi series that kicked incredible ass which was what me and Alex were hired to do. I do wish it sold better and I do wish it was continuing with another team but I wish that about every comic on earth.

I am grateful we got to do our entire 12 issues. When you get to 12 you'll see we got to tell our entire story uninterrupted which is very nice. For you guys that supported it you'll have a nice whole thing.

There is a some light at the end of this dreary tunnel, however, as Bendis did indicate that he and Maleev would be returning to work on SCARLET, the writer's creator owned series published through ICON. While this is great news for SCARLET fans who haven't seen an appearance from the heroine since April. 2011; it is still a little bit bittersweet for Moon Knight fans who have been thoroughly enjoying the series. The next issue of MOON KNIGHT (#10) hits store shelves on February 29th, 2012.

I'll say what I said in the other forum: I never read the series but it's always a shame when a 'small time' hero's ongoing is canceled. Plus the art was very pretty. And it was good that Echo had a place again. Although then again the whole concept of the series was a deliberate attempt in cashing in on the success of other heroes and trying to assosciate them with a minor one. I just find that insulting to the character. Not having faith in a character like that is shameful.

It was awful. I lost all interest 5 issues in, and sales agreed with me. Bye Moon Knight.

I don't think that's why the book was cancelled. If the guy who wrote half of Marvel's best selling comics for the last 4-5 years can't keep his book afloat and his book has constantly been cancelled (He's going on like Volume 8 now), maybe it's Moon Knight and not the writers.Maybe he's just not interesting enough.

It seems sad to me that people who claim to be big Moon Knight fans are voluntarily not purchasing his current running series, which is essentially creating a self-fulfilling prophecy when they follow it up by saying "It's gonna be cancelled anyway." or some other kind of critique because people can't seem to handle the status-quo changing.

I don't feel like the Avenger personalities were given to Spector as any form of sales pitch to get readers, in fact - I think it's done well and with taste and understanding of where the character has come from and is on his way to becoming. I think we're simply seeing visual manifestations of what he is thinking, and they're taking shape in the form of people whose ideals he shares - at least on some level. Cap's honour, Spidey's nobility and good heartedness, and Wolverine's pragmatism, values similarly reflected in the former trio of Spector/Lockley/Grant. He is NOT a "one man Avengers team".

I think it's a breath of fresh air to see them walking away from something that for 30-ish years has obviously not helped Moon Knight get off the B-List. This cancellation pretty much guarantees more of the same, and he'll fall into the background of Secret Avengers stuff - just sucks if you ask me.

That seems to me more a complaint about the writer's style and his use/abuse of writing repeatedly "gimmicky" stories, as opposed to any actual issue taken with the character or substance of the book.

The solicit for Moon Knight #12 literally describes him as such.

marvel needs to scrap his history, and start new. the design of moon knight cool, but stop with the crazyness. it's not working. kill marc spector, and give the design/title to someone else. i gave up after 3 issues even with the bendis/maleev team(which is a great team up on comics). moon knight just needs a different angle.

Vengeance really should have ended after 5. That was the only real story arc of the whole thing. The rest was Deadpool, tie ins, and... and it was just a mess.

i always have high hopes for Marc Spector/Moon Knight.

They cancelled a Taskmaster series with a lead character who had a tony stark goatee and a shitty entourage tv show. Marvel must lose money on comics.. i can only see this writing pushing readers away to other forms of more thought out entertainment.

no one asked me but i believe an angle would be take it back to the werewolf bite. marc spector was wearing silver armour - it gave gives him supernatural abilities without a lycanthrope mutation . the personality disorder arose from a series of traumatic events. The Lycanthrope virus caused depersonalization and hallucinations (Khonshu is a justification for returning from the dead). Marc Spector is very intelligent. Have him grounded in a urban supernatural setting taking on werewolf street gangs, lesbian draculas, f_ck even have him punch out a few mummies that storm the set of his TV show. DO NOT REBOOT. REFINE. it can and must be done - BATMAN had a dog!

I really thought that this would be the book to bring Moon Knight around to mainstream a bit more. The book was not only good, but pretty damn original. Im surprised it didn't do better from word of mouth because the book was really really good. I'd like to see the Bendis Maleev team tackle a Task Master book because that what it sort of remined me of a bit in the fight segments. Sad news. This book wasn't even considered then by most people because if it was they would have stayed on it. It was that good.

@k4tzm4n: Isn't that the same comic where Taskmaster was scared of Moon Knight?

Also, it is clear that Bendis is ending this series with the hopes that it will gain legendary status right next to DKR or Watchmen, when in reality the only people who really seemed to like it were the "Moon Knight fans", AKA the people who never really read Moon Knight's original stuff and base him completely on his new personality. Kinda like new Deadpool fans. I consider myself a pretty big Moon Knight fan myself, I'm almost done with MK Essentials #1

Khonshu has been proven to be real a few times in the comics.

My local comic shop never remembered to pull the book for me, so it was always a dice roll whether I'd be able to keep up with it month to month. I did. If everyone else had the same problem I did, though, I could see where it would have had trouble finding an audience.

I had hoped the Bendis/Maleev team would have seen a return to the same level of storytelling they produced with Daredevil. I never got into their Moon Knight, though. The art was still beautiful, but the take on the character just didn't connect with me.

I think Moon Knight might just be suffering from revival fatigue. He's been brought back, again and again, in short succession, each time re-tooled with a new mission statement. Let the character stay on the shelf for awhile. Wait for the fan base to build up a renewed hunger for the character, and then try a new series. Take a look at the various series the character has held, and track the sales figures on the series for those years. Look at what worked, what resounded with the fan base. Then build from there. Chances are, if you're a fan of Moon Knight, then you're a fan of Moon Knight's supporting characters and villains. There's no reason not to use them, Considering the series on-again/off-again nature, it's not like all of those characters have been fully explored, or had their stories fully told. There's no reason why a Moon Knight series cannot work. It did work... very well, too... in the 70's & 80's. There's a foundation in place. They just need to build on it.

Maybe if everything Bendis does wasn't automatically $3.99, it might have had a chance. Moon Knight's just popular enough to carry that kind of price point.

I don't agree with most of you guys. I thought that this Moon Knight series was excellent, and incredibly engrossing. I for one will be extremely saddened to see the series go.
