'Batman: Streets of Gotham' Reviewed!

Babs reviews the latest issue!

I have really been excited about the work Dini has done on this series, and while I did not personally find this second issue to be as good as the first; it was still fantastic. I loved the fact that they add 'Manhunter' to the issue as a second feature, and while I did not take a lot of time discussing it, I want to reiterate how great Marc Andreyko's writing is for this series. Overall it was a good issue, in my opinion, and I hope you guys liked it as well! Let me know!

Grrreat review.  Lots of back information on the characters,  Lot's oponions and why you like the book.  Well done Babs.  Dini is the man too.

I feel like looking at character relationships that already exist is valuable. It gives a better understanding, and I don't know if everyone would be familiar with a character like Dr. Elliot for example but hopefully this review allows people who normally wouldn't pick it up to do so, and have a better understanding of what is going on.

I'm liking Streets Of Gotham myself & I like how Firefly is finally getting some recognition these days lately. I always felt that him and Mr.Zsasz were never shown their true potential of being A - List villains.

I love Firefly and Dini's salvaged version of the Hush character, so my anticipation was at a fever pitch for this issue.

Unfortunately, as you mentioned, as effectively as Firefly was portrayed as a potential A-lister in the previous issue, he was taken down extremely quickly and in a manner too familiar to his previous appearances. And as much as I enjoyed him getting the upper hand on Black Mask, if they were going to have Lynns get busted before the issue ended, they shouldn't have had made BM look like such a wuss.

The Hush stuff was just about perfect, though.

Ha Babs, wow you called Batman Nightwing on purpose huh?  I will agree at first I didn't want this change but I feel like we should all just go with it and enjoy it. It's only temporary. Yes Bruce Wayne is and always will be Batman but I think for now this lets Dick as a character grow even more. There's just so many possibilities to explore with the story telling. Maybe  Damian can turn out not to be such a punk also. They went through all this trouble to get a new Batman in there, Bruce coming back any sooner than a year I will be upset. I'm enjoying the hell out of the new guys. Good review though! I'll for sure be picking up the next one.

Good, Job Babs and why....why do you hate Dick Grayson?

I actually liked the Manhunter comic more than Batman's story. This story felt poorly put together and I don't see fire fly being as great of a villain as people think. I thought it was awesome how he set fire to gotham in the first issue but in this one he goes out like a punk. He shows how bad ass he is to the black mask but once agianst batman he runs away and even tells batman not to clog his jet pack, how lame is that, overall I thought he could have been portayed better in a time in comics where once unknown villians are becoming total badasses.  I do love Dick Grayson and would love for him to stay Batman, he and Damian have great potential, thats just my opinion so don't flame me. The Manhunter comic was great though, I don't really like the character of Manhunter but Jane Doe is one of my favorite new villains and this actually made her creepier. I just hope Dini steps up his game, he can do better than this and Sirens #1.

I disagree, even though Bruce is my favorite character the bat-books and batfamily hadn't been as good in years before they got rid of him. We also have a miniseries by Kevin Smith and the Superman/Batman book to have our share of Bruce Wayne so why get rid of a story with so much potential?
Posted by cascadeking09
@Nighthunter: everbody's waitin for him to come back that's y. the only reason to kill him off is to get people back into to it, but im ready see him back now i dont have a problem with him bein gone a lil bit longer but i dont want it to go too far cause i never wanted dick to be batman in the first place.

Firefly is totally underused and underrated. I so agree! I'm going to check this series out. =]

I enjoyed the issue giving it the same rating of a 3-3.5. The return of Hush should be interesting. I'd figured he'd be pissed that he wasn't able to get his revenge on Bruce. Perhaps what he's trying to do at the end is a way to somewhat ruin what the Batfamily has worked for. I don't see this issue as a filler. I've ordered 2 months in advance of Streets of Gotham, Dr. Elliot posing as Bruce seem to have reprecussions that may last. Babbs touched on Black Mask and Firefly dispute. In BFTC, once Black Mask frees the inmates from Arkham. It seemed like he had a hold on the criminals due to the potential of implosion of the chip. That may not be the case. Although, Black Mask got his butt kick I doubt they'd kill em off so soon because we still don't know who he is. It's understandable to see Ra's Al Ghul keeping tabs on Gotham and Bruce. He's watching over Tim, perhaps measuring his skills as a detective. Maybe Ra's doesn't think Bruce is gone as well

I don't mind Dick Grayson as Batman at least for now. There's the whole new dynamic between Dick and Damien. The stories come off as fresh. No one can replace Bruce and he will be back. Hopefully soon within a year or two! So I can't blame Babbs for calling Dick, Nightwing. It's better than what she called him before "Diet Batman", lol...

Paul Dini ..., my little cousin hates him cuz he thinks that the way Dini wrote a story is always "hang"/the cliffhanger in each episodes of Batman (animition tv series).  Like him though, he makes every character realistic and important, even the minor one.

Now I'm tempted to have this issue

If I did what the "cool kids" did growing up, I would have gotten into a lot of trouble...

Babs I've seriously fallen off the Batman trail for quite some time now and just start back reading some of the arc's starting with the Battle for the Cowl which was quite a surprise for me. But, I took your advise a couple of weeks ago and picked up Batman Confidential #1 and was quite impressed, you got me back on point with Bats (Bruce Wayne).

Batman: Streets of Gotham will be my next read to getting back on the path of Bat goodness. : )

Streets of Gotham has been great so far, but my favorite Bat book out there right now might be Batman Confidential.  The stories have been seriously well done.  I hope they bring back 'Bad Cop" - a great villain with tons of potential.
