Batman Battle of the Month: Batman vs. Cyclops

Can the Dark Knight overcome the first X-Man's optic blasts?

Oh yes, it's that time again, Viners! This month, Scott Summers will take on DC's Dark Knight. Both are brilliant tacticians, but who will come out on top? Will Cyclops' blasts of concussive force keep Bruce down for the count... or does Batman have the skill and equipment required to take down the former leader of the X-Men?

Yes, I've changed the title of the feature from "Does Batman Always Win?" to "Batman Battle of the Month." Why? Because the focus of the conversation should be on the battle, not confusion over whether there's some kind of implication in the title. Anyway, read on to see the rules for the match and then click the link when you're ready to vote, read the debate, or present an argument of your own!

No Caption Provided

Match Rules

  • Combatants are in character.
  • This is a random encounter.
  • They're fighting in a generic downtown city setting. It's unpopulated, at night and all standard city lights remain on. Assume they start roughly 50 feet apart and visible. There's a fair amount of cover between them (parked vehicles, bus stops and such). The entire area is on limits. This means alleys, rooftops, building interiors, etc..
  • All characters have standard gear.
  • This is PRE-PHOENIX FORCE Cyclops. This way he actually has control of his power.
  • Incapacitation, knockout or death all count as elimination.

Viners, you have the week to research, debate and vote! This means there's no reason to vote right away if you don't have all of the info you need to make an educated decision. Check the homepage Friday for an updated article with the following:

  • My extended thoughts on the match.
  • A Viner Argument in favor of the poll's winner (can't include scans and must be in the poll thread).
  • Extra thoughts from other Comic Vine staffers.
  • If we're lucky, blurbs from industry talent.

Feel free to make future match suggestions in the comments below or via Gregg's Twitter page.

Cyclops:

- This is a random encounter. Both are great tactic minds in their own universes, but while Batman is the king of prep, Cyclops is at his best when improvising and this is a chance encounter with no prep (read Nick Fury files, and you can see in a lot of comics how he thrives under pressure). Even when not improvising Cyclops is one of the finest tacticians of the Marvel Universe (probably only the original Nick Fury surpass him, Steve Rogers leads by charisma more than being a genious at combat tactics like those 2).

- If this goes H2H at some point, Cyclops is still one of the best H2H fighters in the X-Men and at any point could use a blast to make the fight ranged again (being able to punch with your eyes gives you an aditional thread in H2H if you manage to hold both of your opponent hands).

- If either at some point he thinks that Batman is too high a thread, or that he will survive it but be taken out, he can remove his visor (I want that thing out of my lawn moment) and win this.

- If Batman tries to go stealth, Cyclops can simply remove all cover from the battlefield negating him the stealth card.

Cyclops rivals him in tactics (in fact in this scenario he can beat him given what each one is better at) and has super powers able to destroy a small planet.

I'm rather torn since you assume that Cyclops as of late has been more ruthless than before he might not hesitate to optic blast Bats on site. Hand to hand Cyc isn't as good as Batman. Now pre phonenix five Cyclops would pause before shooting someone directly without knowing his opponents durability. Both are great leaders and fighters in their own right but I give this one to the Batman.

Batman. Of course it's Batman.

We're talkinga bout the MOTHERFLIPPEN BATMAN!!!

In my rule book, Batman beats anybody below mid-god level beings (that includes Superman but with a slim chance).

Batman has just too many factors that are much much better than Cyke's "laser blasts".

It's a 7/10. The 3/10 goes to Cyke when he uses the laser blasts and actually hits Batman. The 7 goes to Bats because he outclasses Cyclops in everything. And in the 2 of the 7, Cyclops uses those blasts and Bats. And I still say he wins. But it's actually a 2/5 WHEN Cyclops uses the beams...

I say too close to call. Do the two know that the area is unpopulated? If not Cyke will be careful with his optic blasts since he won't be sure if there are people who could get hurt. Thus it could come down to hand to hand which Batman would win. Now if they are aware it is unpopulated then Cyke may have the upper hand since he won't have to worry about using optic blasts.

Like I said, if Batman gets in close I give this to him, it's just the matter of getting in close. Hence my needing to do some more reading before voting, I want to make sure I'm using all the facts.

I gotcha. That's a very reasonable stance to take. Especially this early on in the Thread. I'm sure more people will chime in here to help you make your decision more clear.

Wasn't there a scene in Justice League Doom where Bats is fighting Jack and does quite well. But as much as I like Bats, Cyclops takes this.

I think the statement "cyclops has tagged wolverine" is silly. Wolverine isn't a tactical fighter, he stupidly jumps at his opponents head on.

Cyclops all the way!!! you forget that bats has all these gadgets but when will he ever get close enough to use them? Cyclops will just shoot down his batarangs etc, then do I wide optic blast to knock bruce down, then he will finish him with a laser beam inbetween the eyes.

Call me crazy, but that doesn't seem like the logical course of action at all in this scenario...

How so? Cyclops is no nonsense. After Bats does a bit of dodging and flipping around, Cyclops just says, "Screw this," and cuts loose with a wide angle blast that can't be dodged.

id give it to cyclops since it is a random encounter.cyclops has taken down characters that are way more powerful than batman. heres how i see it playing out. cyc feels batman out first with a hand to hand match up. then once cyc knows he is outmatched he uses an optic blast up close. not enough to kill but to knock out. and yes batman may dodge it but since he doesnt see it coming he probly wont. if batman stays conscious then he will most likely try to hide and do stealth. here is where the battle can go either way. id say 6 out of 10 cyc still wins because he has great reflexes and is an expert marksman with his optic blasts.

It makes me sad that most people are going to just vote for Batman because he is Batman.

But in this fight, I gotta give it to Batman :P.

I feel Cyke has a good chance. Batman may be one of the premier H2H fighters in the DCU but Cyclops is no slouch if it devolves into just a fist fight Cyke would give Batman a hard time before going down. Also like many others have said one hit from Cykes optic blast and its Scott for the win, also on tha note in response to the video of Batman & Nightwing v Amazo Bruce would slap plastique on Cyclops, Bruce has a no kill code, using that as an example is just silly to me. Since we're talking about the no kill code Scott dosent like killing but he's much more flexible about it than Bruce. Having said that I think it's too close to call. I can conceivably see either guy winning under these circumstances.

You said remove visor, not fire a wider blast. There's a significant difference. Removing his visor intentionally is reserved for very large threats of great power. Batman's incredibly skilled and will pose a challenge, but worthy of Scott going, "Get off my lawn?" No.

Captain America can't dodge Cyclops's blasts he has to block them.

Wolverine cant dodge them either he wears them all the time losing chunks of his face in the process.

Spider-Man can't dodge them either, Cyclops blasted him broadside right off a ship into the Hudson river

Well , Bruce was the first person who ever dogded Darkseids Omega Beam , but I am still not sure whether he could avoid Cyclops eye blasts . They seem to be even faster and there is not a lot of space between the combatants in this battle , so Bruce would probably not get away before Cyclops just knocks him out with a single well aimed blast . If he does however close the distance between them somehow, by dropping a smoke pellet if Cyclops hesitates for example , and then uses stealth to get behind him , he wins this fight . Cyclops might be an impressive fighter , but I highly doub he is as good as Batman .

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gNBTdLXk9JM

Still voted for Cyclops , though . Got to admit that the first scenario that I described sounds a bit more likely .But I wouldn`t mind if Batman wins this one . It`ll annoy the Bat haters :)

I am a huge Cyclops fan, but I feel like people are giving him way too much credit to his ruthlessness or not enough to his moral compass. Cyclops is NOT going to start off a battle against an enemy by leveling a city block. And the other assumption is that Batman is not going to know what Cyclops' powers are. He won't know the extent or range of his power; but look at Cyclops' suit. I don't have Batman's intellect but I can easily look at a costume almost devoid of decoration with a big ass red visor and easily say: "Dude has eye powers, avoid those." I don't think this would be an easy win for Batman AT ALL, but I think intelligence, the ability to use stealth, and smoke bombs will make all the difference.

There is nothing that Cyclops could do to win this imo. Cyclops fires optic blasts and that's kinda like saying a fancy laser and Batman has never dodged those before, of bullets, or rpg's, or meta beings, or.... wait he has and does so on a daily basis by those that are going for the kill with every shot.

Dodge Photomanip but you get the point

You do realize that after this episode all the x-men help train a humbled Cyclops how to fight without his visor? I lack the scan, but its within X-Nation.

That said, Batman should still easily win hand to hand combat, despite Cyclops undeniable skill... but I am going to give this win to Cyclops for one key reason--the setting is, and I quote, "unpopulated." That means there is nothing stopping Cyclops from unleashing a full out optic blast, and there is no way Batman can hope to avoid or withstand this blast without prep time

I do love both characters. I really do, but here we go.

Batman:

So the rules say that it is at night. Batman can move almost undetected easily. He could easily hide away, hit Cyclops from many angles with his gadgets, maybe use a gas grenade which he often does, and if he gets behind Cyclops undetected, he can knock him out. All of this, and yes, while Cyclops can just level every building around him, he'd cut out all sources of light by doing so and Batman can now move anywhere in darkness. Batman is almost always prepared to take on any opponent, usually relying on surprise to use said preparations.

Cyclops:

Like I said it is at night. Cyclops has been shown to take on more than four opponents at once while blindfolded. He can work quite well in the dark. That takes away of some of Batman's stealth tactics. Also, while some have pointed out comparisons between Wolverine and batman many times, and even brought up Batmans durability. They're comparing Batman to Wolverine, who Cyclops has fought and taken on wolverine so many freaking times and while Cyclops gets slashed/stabbed, he doesn't go down and continues to shred, the ever healing, Wolverine over and over again. In AvX, wolverine beats the crap out of Captain America in a about a minute until another avenger shoves wolverine out of the plane. A while before that we saw Cyclops and Wolverine go all out against each other, while a giant self regenerating Sentinal is attacking them, and guess what, the entire time they were fighting in "hand to hand" combat (Yeah, at point blank cyclops was blasting off Wolverine's face).

Now why are they fighting? If Cyclops had committed something that batman considered a serious crime, he'd go almost all out against Cyclops and win, unless Cyclops thinks Batman is a threat to mutants, then Cyclops is guaranteed to win. There in character here. Cyclops has always been the more motivated hero. Batman just has his conviction, Cyclops has his beliefs. If neither of these are the case, chances are they'd both fight half assed and talk most of the time and end the fight in a conversation.

If they do end up in a fight til one drops, I think at one point, Cyclops would hit Bats with a low powered optic blast, Batman will get up, revealing his suit can take a hit and Cyclops would feel free to let go a bit more and launch a wide range blast. I say the odds are 5.5/4.5 Cyclops.

But what if Cyclops didn't control himself in such a situation? I mean think about it, he would probably want to kill Batman so why not do it? Not only that but Cyclops wouldn't want to hurt a fellow mutant. Not only THAT but that whole concept was stupid and nonsensical.

I'm a big Batman fan, but with no prep and Cyclops going in at 100% I see now chance of him winning. I'm going with Cyclops on this one. Though I would like to note that for Cyclops to win he has to go in 100%.
