Batman: Arkham Origins Video Game Impressions

We've had another chance to become Batman, set in the early days of Gotham. Is it everything we'd hoped it would be?

Many gamers have spent the past few days immersed in Gotham City once again with the release of Batman: Arkham Origins. As the third game in the franchise, we actually journey back to an earlier time in Batman's career. This gives players a chance to return to Gotham but before the craziness from Arkham City as well as giving us a chance to see certain characters return or cross paths with Batman for the first time.

No Caption Provided

The story focuses on the bounty placed on Batman's head by Black Mask. This causes several of Batman's biggest foes to crawl out of the woodwork on Christmas Eve. As Alfred puts it, Batman could simply stay home but Batman knows these assassins roaming the street could lead to innocents getting harmed.

As far as those innocents go, thankfully for Batman's piece of mind, there aren't a whole lot on the streets. The game promises a bigger free-roaming environment. You'll have your main mission with reminders that you really ought to visit or stop so-and-so but as you cruise around the rooftops, you'll hear about certain crimes in progress. Similar to the previous games, you mainly beat up on a bunch of street thugs. It is a way to build up your points for upgrades. And you'll have plenty of dealings with Riddler to keep you busy as well.

No Caption Provided

If you've played the previous games, you'll be able to dive right in. There is a new "Enhanced Detective Mode" where you can replay what happened at crime scenes (this is essential in some parts). A lot of the familiar weapons are at your disposal along with some new ones. You'll also have some access to the Batplane, which you'll definitely want to use to avoid having to go back and forth, the long way.

Because it's set earlier than the other games, we can justify Batman not easily mopping the floor with his opponents. The boss battles are a little unbalanced, but again, we're talking about a less experienced Batman so that must explain why some of the fights got a little frustrating, right?

No Caption Provided

You may have heard about the early encounter with Deathstroke. Yes, we're talking about Deathstroke and he should be a complete badass. There's one thing to creating a challenge and another when that challenge relies on repeated playing just to get to the next part. I'm sure there are many expert gamers that were able to defeat him on the first try, right? There is a weird balance between the different villains. Some are pretty unexpected.

The biggest problem I had was the glitches. At one point, early in the game, on the way to try to find Penguin, the game simply froze. The screen went black and all I could hear street noise. Nothing could be one except for restarting the game. Then, of course, my Xbox wouldn't start back up. There were some known issues, especially when trying to log on with your WBID. Some of these issues were fixed. But other glitches in the game ended up leaving a bit of a sour taste in my mouth. Nothing like having to replay the last bit over again because the game didn't save.

No Caption Provided

Aside from the small number of new characters and gameplay options and glitches, how is the game? The good and the bad thing is, it's Batman. You can't deny how fun it is skulking around the rooftops and waiting to drop down on your unsuspecting foes. There's that satisfaction seeing your final blow play out in slow-motion. Having enjoyed the previous games, who wouldn't want more? This might make us more accepting to any downsides.

The problem is, there's not really a lot of new aspects to the game to justify the full retail price, especially with the glitches. I would have preferred having the game delayed a tiny bit in order to iron these out. From our perspective, it's great having the Dark Knight in a video game of this caliber. There are plenty of tiny Easter Eggs that make you feel like the developers really kept us in mind. Whether it's mention of a certain company owned by green-clad archer or a poster for a certain top hat wearing magician, there are little things that really make this fun, from a comic reader's perspective. Interacting with the characters and seeing the introduction of others even makes you hunger for more.

No Caption Provided

If it wasn't for the glitches and freeze ups. Part of it is, how forgiving can Bat-fans be? WB Montreal had a strong legacy to live up to. They do nail it in many areas. There are some cool new aspects added, just not too many. The minor problems that should have been caught before the game's release leaves me a little fearful for future Batman games.

Batman: Arkham Origins can be a fun game. You get to be Batman, immersed in Gotham. You'll feel right at home if you've played the others. I can't say it's a great game but it can be a lot of fun. The story is interesting and different enough from the previous two games. Do your best to avoid spoilers, if you can. Troy Baker does a great job as Joker and Roger Craig Smith stepped into Batman's shoes nicely.

The game has its share of problems but it also has some really nice moments that will bring a smile to your face. If you've enjoyed the other two Arkham games, you will like this as well. It's not re-inventing the franchise but it doesn't really have to. It's unfortunate that there are some problems. Perhaps an update will fix some of them. Until then, you can count on return trips to Gotham to fully explore every corner. It's good. It's not great. But it's Batman. And you have some fun with this game.

@war_killer: I agree a little whith what u said about the joker being the main baddy, but even so they didn't need to screw black mask over in the process. Also it was bad writing at the end there. I mean really? He just had to take over another prison? The copperhead mission didn't bother me but it annoyed me since it had little if no purpose. The side missions where total repeats and wastes of time.

I'll be honest when I say that I was disappointed when found it Black Mask was simply a fall-guy in the game, as WB had been teasing Black Mask as being the big bad and I was excited to see him get some spotlight as I find his character pretty interesting. I do feel that Joker makes more sense as Batman's real first big villain, but I hate that Black Mask got shafted in the process. Wish there was a way they could have somehow given both villains a chance to shine, similar to how in Arkham City both Joker and Hugo Strange were the two main villains.

You're right on the side-missions. Half of the eight assassins (I don't count Killer Croc, he's never been an assassin and really wasn't even one in the game, despite them saying he was) were pointless and their missions didn't even tie into the main story. You could literally play through the whole main story and never encounter some of the assassins (like Deadshot and Shiva) which made them feel a but pointless.

I think the game gets too much hate. Sure, the Joker twist felt redundant, but the boss fights RULED!

I had so much hope. What could have been an amazing and different kind of batman game turned into a blunt and unsatisfactory waste. I did like the cinematics, but the rest was so dull. Every other arkham game had a pleasant and breathtaking twist at the end. Origins was exactly what they said it would be. The only surprise was that they ruined an amazing villain bye making him the Joker, cus god forbid you use anyone other that him as your main villain! Even Arkham Cith treated black mask better, and he was in DLC. also what was the point of Deathstroke, Copperhead, Shiva, Firefly, and Electrocutioner other than two minute boss fights? Electrocutioner had one, minuscule purpose of giving the player an over powered gadget. Speeding of which, if you enjoyed predator missions in City and Asylum, then you'll hate the bat law. You can litteraly finish entire predator missions sitting on a single gargoyle which that thing! Anyway, I'll stop boring you, that's Arkham origins job. If your an arkham fan play it just cus of the name.

I for one am enjoying it. I just can't get past the second Bane fight. Every hit from him takes most of your health out while one hit from you only takes like, not even three bars. Annoying... anyway, it's very beautiful and hope they'll continue with the Arkham series

I am still playing the game but I love it so far. There are definitly some issues, but overall it's not so bad. What are updates for? The only problem I have with it really is that I think they introduced Deathstroke a tad early. For all the emphasis on him, they might vae saved him for a late-game boss fight instead of early-on. Even so, I love what they have done so far and I think it deserves a fair eight out of ten. It's not that different from Arkham City, but that's not necessarily a bad thing. I am puzzled by why they changed the control scheme, but I can allow it, it's just a matter of getting used to.

For those that want to wait, that's fine, but it's gonna be a very, very long time until it reaches twenty dollars. I'd get it after it's no longer considered a new release. Still though, a fantastic game!

Yeah,i had a problem with that too.....i thought he would have been a top dog or something.....and despite the Joker trailer, later on,i still thought Slade would be a serious aspect of the game......but meh......(Well there is a certain after credit scene,though.....)

@war_killer: THAT....i didnt like......

  1. The Black Mask=Joker is like Clayface=Joker in AC.....a tiny rip-off
  2. This thing you mention is a tiny rip-off of AA too....
  3. The poisoned Batman
  4. The "dreamy" sequences....

Well,you can call them throwbacks(or "throw-future" at that point... :P ) but if it's not intentional,then it's a bit of a lazy writing.....

"Been-there-done-that" kinda thing,you know what i mean?!

1.) At first I didn't like that twist so much, personally because I was wanting Black Mask to be the big baddie in the game. But after thinking about it, the story was meant to be a defining moment in Batman's career, and really I can't see what's more defining than his first encounter with The Joker.

2.) I guess you could call the part with Joker and Blackgate a rip-off, I simply thought it was node towards what Joker would eventually do in Asylum, I didn't really see it as a rip-off as it wasn't as grand as it was in Asylum.

3.) I assume you're talking about the part with Copperhead? If so, I really don't think that's a big of a deal, seeing as it really wasn't that important to the plot but more of a way to simply make Copperhead more of a threat. It wasn't like in Arkham City where it's a race against the clock to find a cure before you die.

But I do agree that there were moments where I felt like I've done this-that before in the previous games. The Mad Hatter mission felt a lot like Scarecrows missions from Asylum, but with a few additional puzzles.

So far i don't have ONE aspect of the game i don't like.Seriously.

The Joker meeting Harley for the first time, and the level itself was brilliant....

I loved the part with Joker and Harley, the scene was great and one of the highlights of the game!

YEah,it was freaking awesome!

Troy Baker for the Joker,if Hamill won't do him.....in everything, i mean.Games, animation, etc.

The fight was good too, they should've made Joker a playable character!

Baker was an epic Joker! I'm hoping he'll continue on if Hamill is done.

Oh God he was great.....i accually believed that this was a younger Arkham Asylum Joker!

So good.

Agreed! I also liked how the final part of the game, where Joker takes over Blackgate, was a throwback to the plot in Arkham Asylum.

I finished the storymode yesterday, thought it was fun and enjoyable. The only thing that bothers me is that the story is quite short. Maybe if they had made Gotham smaller, they could have made the story bigger. I also think that the Rocksteady guys are Batman fans because of the huge amount of easter eggs and i missed that in Origins. I found it extremely fun in both Asylum and City that after you finish the game you can search for all the easter eggs and scanning them. You can tell that the guys aren't fans because of the rogue gallery. There are just a couple of Batman villians and the rest are all extra's. Like all those cops and henchmen.
I'm really excited about the game that comes after City that Kevin Conroy spoiled. I really hope Rocksteady can make it more of an easter egghunt and that they continue on the freaking awesome storyline that they set up with Asylum and City.. But hey, it's Rocksteady right, gotta be good

I'm not going to cry about it or defend it. Yeah different voice actors, different studio, not the most accurate portrayal of the boss fights. Sure.. I get it! It is what it is and I've had an awesome time playing it and all the DLC that's been released. Shut up, have fun, shut up again and stay shutted upped (yeah that just happened) and enjoy it you p-word cry baby. I'm a mother #*!$@&^ monster at all 3 Arkham console games and will gladly accept any challenges. Before you ramble on with your sob story of let down expectations just know that at the end of the day... This is the game you deserve, but not the one you need right now.

yes this game feels a lot like the previous two but perhaps we are setting too high a standard. Rocksteady didn't make this game, and I have to give Warner Bros Montreal credit for a solid effort. Theres nothing bad about it at all, it's just not quite as good. I've still thoroughly enjoyed playing it and I will probably still be playing it 4 months from now.

I think the game was a little to easy because I started my first play through on hard and pretty much breezed through the whole game felt like I was playing on normal. The Deathstroke fight was a complete disappointment heck all the boss fights besides the Bane fights where a disappointment. I really liked the story though which I found was a better than Arkham City and the fighting felt better as well. Overrall I enjoyed the game and cant wait to see what's done on next gen.

I absolutely loved this game. Didn't have too much of an issue with glitches or anything. As a massive Batman fan the game really hooked me. Is it better than Arkham City? No, but AC is my favorite game of all time so it is hard to live up to that. Still, I think Origins is a great addition to the Arkham series.

I did really enjoy Troy Baker but I thought Roger Craig Smith was really flat for most of the game but had some really great moments near the end and turned me around on him. I think he's really great but no one can replace Kevin Conroy.

Good game besides the freezing. Story was good but I do miss alot of the other villains that were included in Arkham City like Ras al Ghul and Hugo Strange...it didnt feel so much like a Batman origin game but more of a Joker origin game. (There was a mention somewhere that Batman had been around for 2 years and this was pretty much Gotham's first knowing he was real.)

When Arkham origins was announced I looked at it as though they needed a prequel story somewhere for what is to come in a game following Arkham City. The villains in this game were defiantly an interesting choice in my opinion but could of needed more. I wish Black Mask and Deathstroke had more. I was happy with how Lady Shiva was portrayed though it wasnt alot which I didnt expect it to be.

I thought Troy Baker did a great job with the Joker voice. I didnt even really notice it wasnt Mark Hamill. Batman's didnt stand out to me as much as it did on the other games but was okay. One the other hand Mark Rolston who did Deathstoke I thought did a pretty good job. Kelly Hu did Lady Shiva's voice which just stood out to me because she did Cheshire on Young Justice, Karai in alot of the new Ninja Turtle stuff, as well as plays China on the show Arrow.

One of my complaints besides the constant freezing was that they took out all those Riddler trophy things you had to scan. I loved finding areas in the old games where you could see that someone has been there or exists. (example: Harvey Dent election posters, Jack Ryder on the radio, posters of the Haly's Circus, little seeds and easter eggs like that I loved.) I saw a Queen Industries storage container which makes me want a Green arrow game or appearance.

I did like in Arkham City how there were playable chapters as Catwoman that went along with the main story. Though you didnt actually have to play them to beat the game. I was almost expecting that with Deathstroke but got nothing. They need to do that again but have them for Catwoman, Nightwing, Robin, Batgirl, possibly Jason Todd(Red Hood), Deathstroke, or even Jim Gordon.

My favorite games are these and the Splinter Cell games so I enjoyed it and appreciate it.

And nowadays it feels like every game is glitchy, has bugs, and freezes up. I dont know why that is. Older games work great but then again we are entering Xbox One and PS4.

I love the game! I beat the main story and am going through the side missions before trying the plus mode. The only thing I absolutely hate is when it freezes up on me. I have only had that problem since I beat the main story line. I hope they patch it up with an xbox live update and for the other users on there respective mode of play. They last fight had my heart racing and the only part that sucked for me was how annoying the stupid Deathstroke fight was. I can only imagine how long it will take me to beat that in plus mode....

Nice. I feel it was the Dark Knight Rises to the Arkham series lol.

Seeing as how Rises is tied with Begins as my favorite of the trilogy, that can only be a good thing. ;)

It seems they made this game unnecessarily more harder then the previous entries, they should drop the annoying armor dudes, just make it fun. When I play a batman game , I want to feel like a badass, not get my ass whupped :P I did like the story though.

Gamewise I feel like this is the weakest arkham game yet.

I got the collectors edition, and i loved it. For whatever reason i didn't have any noticeable glitches until the the end of the main story, so it was very enjoyable. Great new gadgets, great graphics, great fan service (and post-credit scene). Deathstroke and the costumes are very cool, and challenge maps and online are addicting. Hope this isnt the last game in the series :)

I really enjoyed the game to be honest. However, I agree that it was extremely annoying with all the freezing. The boss fights were a bit anticlimatic, especially the one with Shiva. I expected a much bigger challenge considering her status in the DCU. I loved the Deathstroke fight too, as well as being able to play as him. The after credits scene with Deathstroke and the Suicide Squad was a cool though.

@flameboy298: Right. Green Arrow, Black Canary, Huntress. All of them could be easy. But that's not the Justice League. That's just a little part of the League.

Aquaman could be cool. He doesn't have very many powers so he could be doable. Same with Flash, Cyborg, and Wonder Woman.
