 In 1968 Jane Fonda starred in the famously campy "Barbarella" based on the french graphic novel by Jean-Claude Forest. In 2007, a report was released that director Robert Rodriguez would be at the movie's helm, and he wanted actress Rose McGowan to play the lead. Paramount did not feel, however, that McGowan had the chops to play the lead in a film with a 100 million dollar budget, so they cut the funding to the film. Eventually, " Barbarella" and Rodriguez parted ways, and now Robert Luketic has been stated to direct the sci-fi action-adventure film, with the help of the film's original producer Dino De Laurentiis as well as Martha De Laurentiis. The film's script will be written by Joe Gazzam and according to the Hollywood Reporter;

    The new take on the iconic character will not be campy, though it will keep the sexuality; there will be seductions, but the focus will be on the adventure.

I am a bit unsure about the film's direction, personally. While I have never read the original graphic novel, I feel that the reason for the success of the first film was the fact that it was so campy. I just hope that the re-make does not take the film's premise too seriously, or I feel that it could backfire. Have you seen the original "Barbarella"? Who would you like to see interpret the role of Jane Fonda?
