Axel Alonso Promoted to Marvel Editor-in-Chief

Joe Quesada focuses on being Chief Creative Officer of Marvel Entertainment.

No Caption Provided
It's the beginning of a new year and Marvel Entertainment announces a new Editor-in-Chief. Marvel has promoted Axel Alonso, who will now report to Dan Buckley, Publisher & President, Print, Animation & Digital Divisions, Marvel Worldwide, Inc. Alonso job is to now oversee all day to day duties of Marvel's Publishing Division, including advising on all editorial creative direction, developing new storylines and developing bigger corporate initiatives with Marvel's vast catalogue of characters.

The announcement was made by former Editor-in-Chief and current Chief Creative Officer of Marvel Entertainment, Joe Quesada.

It’s with tremendous pride that I announce Axel Alonso’s promotion to Editor-In-Chief. For over a decade, Axel’s been instrumental in bringing fresh new voices to Marvel and reinventing our biggest characters like Spider-Man, the X-Men, Wolverine and so many more. He’s fought to create unique imprints like Marvel MAX while also bringing fresh new voices to the Marvel family.

== TEASER ==
Alonso has been in the comics industry for over fifteen years and with Marvel since 2000.

Marvel has a great history of the most dynamic and memorable EiCs in comics history and I’m honored to step into this role," said Axel Alonso. "I’ve been blessed to work with some of the most creative men and women in the world, bringing to life some of the most compelling stories you’ll find in any medium. This new role provides me with exciting challenges and prospects I’ve never encountered before, but I know one thing—Marvel’s getting even bigger in 2011.

Quesada will now focus on overseeing Marvel's ventures in film, television, publishing, digital and more.

I agree. I don't think Parker and Watson will tie the knot again.

@Emerald Dragonfly: Then I'd say go for it. If nothing's stopping you, start your own company, work it from the ground up, make it more successful than Quesada's made Marvel, then get back with me.

Say what you want about Quesada, but the fact remains that he did bring Marvel back from the brink of bankruptcy, so he's obviously doing quite a few things right. I'm happy for Alonso's promotion, and look forward to many more years of Marvel goodness. Keep the cosmics rolling, keep the events up to Civil War quality, and keep the characters interesting.

In the immortal words of Erik Larsen I give you this:

So, wait--Marvel is promoting the guy who took the X-Men from being their #1 franchise to being titles with no heat whatsoever? Seriously?

That sums up my feelings exactly.  Don't make mine Marvel.

I'm not surprised that Mr Alonso has been chosen to replace Mr Q.  He's been a very public face of Marvel in recent years.  So this seems a ntaural progression for him.  I'm please for him... but I'm trying not to get my hopes too high :)

Its not like they picked someone from a different company, it is a promotion. Also to all the people hating what happened with Spider-Man, I would suggest you relook at these books since Brand New Day. Even if you read them as an "Elseworlds" style book, they are some great reads. "
here here dude! lots of people are bitching about spider-man, But I hear (dont read spidy, get my spidy fix in avengers ;)) That it has been the best in years. Plus I absolutely loved the modern age of marvel I started reading again around avengers disassembled, and loved the whole 7 years of it all. I actually not a fan of the heroic age, feels to me that "fans" bitched to much that they wanted the old ways back, so they gave it to them, now they are bitching about heroic age. Cant please haters for sure. It's like Spider-man 3, "fans" bitched and moaned about venom to the point that they had to force him into the movie, and look how that turned out ha ha. "
Yeah I agree. The past 10 years of Marvel has been some of the best period. Again, "haters going to hate", thats just the way it is, whether it be Marvel or DC, Spider-Man or Batman, etc. If you want someone to blame for the last 10 years of Marvel, I am sure Joe Q would love to take that burden of leading a successful company. It is just silly at this point, especially if people think things are going to radically change. It isn't and if your hoping it will then find some other books to read. If your main beef is with Spider-Man, there are about 10 different ways to get a Spider-Man fix a month.

This is great news. Now Marvel can actually stay focused on the characters. Instead of story arcs. Don't get me wrong, Civil War was something new and exciting, but Secret Invasion was nothing special. Dark Reign was awesome, but Siege just plain sucked. Marvel needed some fresh outlook. Hopefully Bendis will get go away from Marvel now and trash another comic universe.

@Undeadpool: It's also pretty amazing that with soooooo many Marvel Comics that come out, Quesada has the time to single-handedly dictate every little bit of story line and direction. That on top of the other interactions he's had with movies and entertainment. But maybe it's just easier to blame one guy for the things people don't like rather than focus on the good. If Marvel Comics were doing so horribly under his command, I don't get how they have had such a strong and major position in the comics industry.

Qouted by G-man ''Quesada will now focus on overseeing Marvel's ventures in film, television, publishing, digital and more''.   They just expanded his, Quesadas, duties, management powers and are now giving him a vice president alonso and you know vice presidents can't do much in decision making but let the top pres. do it.

Well, just because I have absolute disdain for the man as a writer and editor. I never made claims against him as a person. You can be a really nice person, but still manage to neuter a story of any real potential. Dragging decades of character development to the realm of fan fiction.

Just as I'm sure there are a lot of nice people working for VIZ Media publishers, but their censorship and alteration of manga is a blight on the industry. I don't see how they can complain about people using scanlations when they are the ones who are refusing to put out a product that meets scanlations in quality and authenticity. You can't put out an altered version of a story then wonder why everyone is going toward the authentic version.

I'm more curious now if Alonso will do things differently or just continue the same path. Though, I'm willing to give him a chance.

Just sucks that this change had to take place as Humberto Ramos is ending his run in Spider-man.

Finally!  Aleluia!!

I've never liked the fact that Joe Q's been over the reigns at MArvel for so long.
I mean, sure I love Joe's artwork skills and some of his writing..but overseeing a big company is a whole different story.

Be it in my Francobelgium comics companies here in Europe or US Comics, I prefer my editor in chiefs to change every once in a while.
You know, to keep things fresh and fun. After a while, they sort of lose focus and their genuine interest & motivation and start makingbad moves and decisions...

Good luck to Axel Alonso, he will have his hands full with fans expectations and keeping the brand fun and alive!

@Rheged:  Ah sorry didnt see your other comments. Im not saying they are better then vertico, not at all, just saying there was a print. But yes they could for sure expand it to be more like vertigo in that sense. They could simply make ICON more then just create something new.

No offense taken, as I hope u didnt take offense to what I said. Personally i feel that Jean is a terrible character and the worst of Marvel comics by far, while I think Emma is one of the best written and most interesting female characters in all of comics, so everyone has there own opinions ha ha

Probably my relying on my example of Vertigo, and saying non-616 line, implying a different superhero universe.  I should have said other genre lines.  :)

They have one bud. ICON. They put out, Criminal, incogneto, and Kick Ass. All amazing books by the way ha
Which is why I had already mentioned ICON and how it could hardly compare to Vertigo.  You don't see a best ICON books of the year list, like you do with Vertigo.

Well, at least Alonso doesn't look like a drunk, disgruntled uncle at a family barbecue the way Quesada always has...that's a place to start. Though, quite frankly, I'm not holding out much hope, it's not as though Spiderman or Wolverine are difficult to manage being that they're so formulaic and the X-men have been mistreated for quite some time now.

I hope Alonso is going to create comics for comics fans and not for gore movie fans.
