Awesome Toy Picks: Minimates - Daredevil, Kingpin, M.O.D.O.K. and Akuma

Some cool collectibles you might want to add to your collection.

Each week we take a close look at some comic book collectibles. That means we take them out of the package to see how cool they really are. This week I decided to open up some figures that I actually bought late last year. I just never got around to featuring them. But because of certain events in our office recently and the inclusion of one character in particular, I felt it was the right time to take a look at these.

This week, let's take a look at some Minimates from Diamond Select.

We've looked at some different Minimates in the past. There was the original X-Men First Class set, Galactus and his Heralds as well as a Power Man and Iron Fist set.

One of the nice thing about the Minimates is there is a large variety of them. You can see that the Marvel Vs. Capcom set with MODOK and Akuma was a Toys R Us exclusive. You can also see other figures from these assortments on the back.

One thing I've heard people say is they prefer LEGO figures over these. I'll admit that sometimes the design of the Minimates is a little odd and takes getting used to but they have a lot more articulation to them. You can actually position them in different poses.

Let's look at Daredevil vs. Kingpin first.

It's nice being able to actual position the figures. Also because they're a little lightweight, you can get them to do more.

These figures are nice with the little touches like Kingpin's cane and Daredevil's billy club, which comes in two versions.

You don't even have to worry about trying to prop them up. Because of the joints and the fact you can move their feet a bit, you can create the different poses and they'll actually stay up.

Besides the different billy club (which you'll see in a bit), you can take off Daredevil's mask and put on the hair (and ears) he comes with.

As for what's going on in these pictures, we know Kingpin is a little tougher than what's been shown. Unfortunately due to Daredevil's blindness, he sometimes misplaces things like his mask.

With the next set, I think it's obvious what made me buy it last year - MODOK. Being a Marvel vs. Capcom set, he comes with Akuma. It's an interesting pairing.

The way I see it, MODOK would likely make the first move. And it'd be one of his special moves.

Of course that might knock Akuma out, but he's not out of the fight just yet. Again, note how easily it is to position these figures.

Akuma is ready to blast at MODOK. Thankfully, for him, this set comes with a blast (and a convenient stand to help it stay up).

I'm not 100% sold on the look of these figures. The heads are a little odd. But you can say the same thing about the LEGO figure designs. These figures are nice in that you can position them easily. There is a large variety of figures available and they are relatively affordable, especially compared to other figures.

With San Diego Comic-Con this week, we likely won't have our regular feature but we should have a look at some new collectibles being released. I do have an appointment with DC Collectibles so hopefully we'll see some new items unveiled.

Annoying about these Minimates is their stealth mode.

Check out the images G-Man has uploaded most recently... here.

Are Minimates popular? I see them in shops, but I've never really liked the design.

I do like that M.O.D.O.K. though.

It looks like Daredevil is break dancing

If I remember correctly Matt began listen to Jazz under Dennis O'Neil's run and there was made several reference to that Matt listen to Jazz or just Jazz. Apparently O'Neil was a Jazz fan himself and gave Matt Murdock the same music taste. David Kraft did with Blue Oyster Cult in Defenders (even though it should play a bigger role in the storyline) because David was a fan of BOC. That Matt would listen to Jazz makes sense compare to music that are louder like Metal for instance. That would probably give Matt some agony. However I can't find the article/blog where the Jazz preference is shown. Can anybody help? The only reference I found was that Glorianna was listen to a Jazz station called WGBO (it does exist).

The BOC reference is mentioned here. It is mentioned in the comments. David corrects Jim when David is accused of plagiarism. If Mantlo did take Barry Windsor-Smith's Hulk story I don't know.

@g_man: Wow thanks Tony for changing my opinion on what I like more. lol I never knew how much of articulation and joints minimates have over Lego. I use to like Lego over Mini Mates because the faces always looked odd. But after seeing this now I am sort of sold that Mini Mates are better than Lego!
