Awesome Toy Picks: Marvel Select: Superior Spider-Man

A cool collectible you'll want to add to your collection.

Each week we take a close look at a comic book collectible. That means taking it out of the package. This week we're talking a look at a Spider-Man figure. But it's not just any Spider-Man figure, it's the SUPERIOR Spider-Man.

This is a Disney Store exclusive. Who would've thought we'd ever get a figure of Doc Ock in Spider-Man's body. In fact, there's actually two. A Marvel Legends version has just gone on sale. (I haven't looked closely at it and it just seems okay compared to this one). It's cool that the back of the box gives a brief explanation over this whole thing.

The Marvel Select figures have big packaging. That's because they come with a base for the figure. Check out the cool art on the side.

One of the reasons I like the Marvel Select figures is because of the base they come with. Sometimes they're just okay but this one is pretty cool. It allows you to set up your figures and they almost look like a statue for a fraction of the cost. And if you prefer, you can take it and play with it or whatever you're supposed to do with action figures.

Rock on!

This version of Spider-Man is supposed to be a "superior" one. He's shown that he doesn't exactly show mercy on his enemies. They lay, defeated, at his feet.

The clear sign that this isn't a regular Spider-Man figure is the eyes and the black instead of blue.

The eyes might look a little weird but that's because Doc Ock improved the lenses. And it is part of what makes this version different and cool looking.

The spider emblem on his back always looked a little different to me as well. His mask/head also looks a little different.

Another thing that was different about SUPERIOR Spider-Man was his claws. They did serve a purpose in the comics and you can see his figures are slightly more pointy that usual. You can also see a slight different in his toes.

Then there's the base. As mentioned, SUPERIOR Spider-Man took no prisoners. Well...actually he did. He took the Sinister Six into custody so he could control them out in battle. Read Chris Yost's SUPERIOR SPIDER-MAN TEAM-UP issues with "The Superior Six."

There's a bunch of boomerangs around but no sign of Boomerang. Maybe he got away? We can see Speed Demon and what's left of Beetle's armor.

Sam Greenwell did the sculpt for the figure and it's really nice. Again, with the Marvel Select figures, they just look really good on display.

The only downside of the figure is you can't really put him in crazy Spider-Man poses. As Daniel Falconer pointed out on Twitter, the Marvel Legends version has different ankle joints that accommodates his stances a little better. (Check HERE for an image).

It's a good looking figure. It has a cool base. It doesn't have hideously visible joints. I'm definitely putting this out on my desk at work.

That's it for this week. You can still get this figure at a Disney Store or directly from them online (click HERE). The figure costs $24.95 and is definitely worth it.

Let us know what you think of this figure.

I wonder what is sought out more, this or ML. I find it odd the venom has amazing articulation but the spidermen never do

Definitely Marvel Legends. Those get gobbled up in retail and also fetch much higher prices in eBay resells.

Marvel Select usually looks nice, but what fun is especially a Spider-Man figure you can't pose?

Here's another quick pose of the Legends.

Paint apps wise it's not the best. He's missing the backpack and gauntlets, but MORE than makes up for it in the poses it can pull off.

Alternatively, if you're interested in a new classic Spidey figure, the ASM2 one that you can see half of in the background is the best one released to date (assuming you don't want to spend $40+ on a figma or Mafex). Yes, even better than the praised McFarlane figure.

Wow that actually looks great! I wish he had the backpack and the extended arms but still, it looks like you could put this bad boy in any awesome Spidey pose that comes to mind! I'm gonna pick this up asap!

I'll probably get this one, but it is a tad underwhelming honestly. I bet that they had designed this before the gauntlets and backpack were used in the comic as that costume evolved through the entire series.

Wow, I don't collect figures at all but I would get that solely for the new Sinister Six features.

@g_man as i don't live in the us i have to import most of the figures and sometmes the costs rise up. So before buying i wanted to get ur opinion on the square enix play arts kai wonder woman figure, since i seem to recall u posting pics of it a while back. Do u think its worth paying double for it? any opinion on the finish and paint?

ps: superior spidey looks great, especially along with the stand.

I don't usually like figures but I might make an exception for this one.

I've seen the ML version with the new suit at Target a few times and I'm really tempted to get it but that $20 price tag keeps driving me away

The helmet is Beetle. The broken parts are obviously the Living Brain.

That's freakin' cool, but the later Superior suit would've been cooler.

Looks like he is rocking the air guitar in those pictures.

@falconer: better than the mcFarlene spidey figure ??????!!!!!!!!!!!!!! BLASPHEMYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Edited by Falconer

@cloudzackvincent: Most PAK figures aren't worth their MSRP, nonetheless double it. Don't even think about it duder.

@jesusdisciple001:From what I've seen it has dated articulation and sculpting, even if it was very good at the time.

Posted by cloudzackvincent

@falconer: OK thnks for the info, but could u elaborate?

Posted by Falconer

@cloudzackvincent: To say they have quality control issues would be an understatement. Figures tend to come with missing pieces, deformed parts, or limbs will just break off the moment you take it out of the package. For $50+ figures, that is completely unacceptable.

Posted by cloudzackvincent

@falconer: ok thanks for the info and saving me a reasonable amount of money.

im really hoping for marvel select to give us superior in his black suit with the gauntlets plus the venom gauntlets as well as the back pack with the legs :) imagine that, i was really dissappointed with the first superior figure they gave us, and when will they learn that accessories are better than bases!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! theres a reason they're re-releasing marvel select venom!
