Each week we take a close look at a comic book collectible. That means opening it up and seeing how it rates outside of the package. With LEGO, it's a given you'll want to open the package.
We've been seeing more and more Super Heroes set featuring both DC and Marvel characters. This week we're going to look at Arctic Batman vs. Mr. Freeze: Aquaman on Ice.
At 198 pieces, this is a fairly quick build. As usual, the key is to sort the pieces. While this set does contain several different bags, they are not numbered like the bigger sets. That means you just have to open all the pieces and spread them out. Taking the time to sort first will make locating the pieces you need a lot easier.
Let's be honest, we have an "Arctic" Batman figure here. My daughter's first question is "Why is Batman in white?" Because we've seen the multitude Batman variant figures, it shouldn't be a surprise to see him dressed in a different outfit.
Mr. Freeze is pretty cool figure, even if he's a tad bulky.
It might be a small set but the ice prison is simple but cool. Mr. Freeze comes with a big helmet and freeze gun. Even with the gun and ice blast, you can still get him to stand up. Most LEGO figures come with two faces but Freeze only has the one.
Even though it goes against what he's supposed to look like, I'm actually happy to get a different version of Batman rather than end up with yet another regular Batman one. It makes sense if he's going to go up against Mr. Freeze in some arctic environment, he'd want to blend into the snow a little more. Then again, his vehicle isn't exactly camouflaged...
As for the vehicle, it is a typical Bat-vehicle. That being said, it is still cool looking. Again, it's nice that there is some variation to the other vehicles in the Batman sets. It does have some weapons. There's little discs on each side that will launch out.
Now comes the part when you can actually play with the LEGO. These sets are designed with certain themes. So of course you'll want to put Aquaman in the ice prison and have Batman rescue him.
Can Batman save the day? Can he defeat Mr. Freeze in his own element and rescue Aquaman? What do you think?
The ice prison has a little lever type thing you can push to make the prison explode open. Aquaman won't be happy but what can he do when Batman already defeated Freeze?
The only thing left to do is swap helmets and hair. You know you've always wondered what Batman would look like as a blonde.
That's it for this week. The set retails for just under $20 and you should be able to find it at stores or online.
