Awesome Toy Picks: DC Comics Super-Villains--Ultraman

A cool collectible you'll want to add to your collection.

Each week we take a close look at a comic book collectible. That means taking it out of the package. FOREVER EVIL might be over but members of the Crime Syndicate live on in action figure form courtesy of DC Collectibles' Super-Villains line. We decided to look at possibly the biggest super-jerk on the team, Ultraman!

Like the other members of the Crime Syndicate and citizens of Earth-3, Ultraman is pretty much the opposite of Superman. Superman has often been referred to as the ultimate boy scout and such. FOREVER EVIL showed us just what Ultraman was capable of. This is a guy willing to move the moon out of orbit in order to cause an eclipse on Earth to prevent the sun harming him with no concern over the citizens of Earth.

With this character, you have traces of Superman's persona but it oozes the personality of Ultraman.

No matter which way he's looking, you can see the smug attitude pouring off him.

Utraman is probably the type of guy that might ask you if you want to go to the gun show. And then regardless if you told him, "No thanks," he'd proceed to show you his.

The DC Collectibles New 52 figures are one of my favorite lines. They have just the right amount of articulation and the detail is great. Even looking at something as simple as Ultraman's boots, you can clearly see these are not Superman's boots. I dig the pointy-ish form of them rather than the typical rounded ones we usually see.

Then there's Ultraman's cape. His cape may not have the same origin as Superman's in the New 52. It may not be as indestructible. Either that or he's just allowed himself to get in some pretty hairy situations. It's a molded rubber and that allows it to have more give and the appearance of an actual cape.

When I heard an Ultraman figure was coming, I'll admit I wasn't immediately super-excited, mainly because of his portrayal in the comics. But seeing him, it's cool to have this darker version of Superman. The red eyes is a perfect touch and he just looks so dang smug.

You might have already picked up this figure. You might be able to find it at your local comic shop. You can also order it directly from DC Collectibles from the luxury of your home (or smart phone or tablet) by visiting DC's online shop (although, it may be temporarily out of stock). The figure retails for $24.95. The 6.75" size means it'll fit perfectly with your other New 52 figures.

That's it for this week. We'll be back next time with another cool comic book collectible.

This is a good figure provided it doesn't come with any defects.

I love they new articulation DCC are pumping into their figures, all of the CA and Batman figures are amazing. Watch out for tight joints though, don't force them otherwise you'll end up with a broken figure. Most of the time you can fix with a quick dose of boiling water or a quick blow of a hair dryer.

I LOVE ULTRMAN!!!! I would totally get this.....

@mahzian: I had to do this for every member of the CS with the exception of Superwoman.

@g_man You should start doing a lego set review every week in addition to the awesome toy picks.

Really happy with all the DCC New 52 figures. Except for the selection of Brett Booth models for Tim and Dick. Besides that, I think DCC is out-shining Mattel.

We have too much lego!!! how about some minimate love just to shake things up a bit..

Wow. Superman witha a "U" instead of a "S".

Still, it doesn't change the fact that the review is done very well.

The cape makes it work

It's already 100x better than Superman's New 52 look

Didn't realize toys worked out and took flexing photos ;)

@amazingwebhead: I think the New 52 look is really good. It's going over really well with non comic fans.

I prefer statues to the action figures they just look better

@captainmarvel4ever: Well, I just think it's stupid to put Superman in armor. Seriously, he's like the one guy who doesn't need it!

Posted by CaptainMarvel4Ever

@amazingwebhead: He kind of does, not for protection, but because of the things he can do he needs something that people belie can keep up with him without being ripped apart. Plus 90% of people who made fun of Superman were aiming at the costume, and his new one is so cool that people aren't dismissing him at first glance.

I guess my only critique to this is why not make the capes cloth instead of hardened plastic? Other than that they figure itself is pretty good.

I usually don't buy figures but I would buy an Ultraman figure with a cloth cape that looks like that.

I've found cloth capes don't really work on action figures. They're not firm enough and end up looking a little sillier. I have an animated Superman one that works okay but I remember having a Batman one that didn't really look right.

The DC toys have been looking good.

It's taken me a while, but I've gotten used to it.

this is nice for my collection :)

Looks like Ultraman wet farted a hole in his cape.

Got it! Preordered in January. I also wanted to get Owlman but after seeing how cool Power Rings lantern was I went with him instead

@smart_dork_dude: That's good, after all, it will only help Supes in the long run, but support from older fans is always important.

he's a cool figure. i especially like his cape. but, for my money? Deathstorm is by far the best of the lot. followed by Superwoman.

@captainmarvel4ever: I think that was specifically the red briefs, which the (in my opinion much better) Man of Steel costume didn't have either. Look, you make a good point, I'm just saying that I don't care for the costume. I just don't like when every superhero has a super-complex armored look.

Wait so Ultraman is in one of the New 52 storylines now?

@amazingwebhead: I can agree that, it doesn't fit every hero.

One of the very few things I don't like about Injustice. Actually, probably the only thing.

Posted by HempKnight757

@mahzian: Yeah something you think they would have done from the start of the New 52. Cause the New 52 Superman I own is entirely to stiff. The Cape is about the only think I like about it.

Posted by CaptainMarvel4Ever

@amazingwebhead: Yeah they defiantly went overboard with that. I can understand wanting to give your game it's own style, but some characters just look stupid.

@captainmarvel4ever: I guess we'll have to wait and see if anyone gets a better look in the sequel.

Posted by CaptainMarvel4Ever

@amazingwebhead: I hope so, the biggest problem in that game was graphics and character designs. Everyone looked so ugly and stiff, which is a real problem considering the purpose of the game was to showcase DC characters off to the general public.

My friend picked this up last month - it is great
