Awesome Art Picks: X-Men, Wolverine, Joker, and More

The coolest comic book art you won't see in comics.

Each week we search for the coolest comic book art that will never appear in actual comics. The reason they won't is because artists often draw sketches for fun or commissions and post them on their blogs, Tumblrs and websites. Some artists even arrange commissions through their sites so be sure to check them out.

Cary Nord posted some cool sketches on his Instagram page this week.

Brett Booth posted a Booster Gold sketch on his blog.

Philip Tan posted a few more sketches on his Facebook page.

Todd Nauck is getting ready for his new NIGHTCRAWLER series and posted this sketch on his Tumblr.

Mahmud Asrar posted a Magdalena sketch on his Tumblr.

Marcio Takara posted some more commissions on his Tumblr. Illyana and Winter Soldier will get inked and posted later.

Peter Nguyen is continuing his experiment in switching X-Men couples costumes and color schemes. He also posted a cool Robin and X-Men pic on his Tumblr.

Cameron Stewart posted a True Detective pic on his Tumblr.

Chris Giarrusso put up another sketch card for sale on his website. It's sold out already.

Joel Gomez posted some more sketches on his Tumblr.

Tom Raney posted this Wolverine sketch on his Twitter page.

Skottie Young posted some sketches from Planet Comicon on his Tumblr.

Dustin Nguyen posted, what he calls, the "actual last page to Batman 28." But then they made some changes. He also posted a very nice Death of the Endless pic on his Tumblr.

That's it for this week. We'll be back next time with even more great art. Which ones were your favorites?

Love that!

I wish that was the last page of batman #29.

I am in a way actually glad that the character's memory has not yet been tainted by the horror that is the New 52 even though I'd really like to read some new stories of her.

DEATH!

All excellent choices.

Great week. And for those who follow, I've posted my deviantART picks for the week. You have to check out Tom Bancroft's two versions of Rocket and Groot, and make sure you vote for Brian Kesinger's Grimlock T-Shirt design.

I actually really like Cyclops' 90's costume on Jean

I want Death to do a "When Harry met Sally" fake O.

meh, an okay week.

Comments like this crack me up. You obviously can do better, right?

@g_man: Umm sorry, I am not blaming you for anything or whatever, I am just saying there have been better weeks. Its not like you can make artists draw stuff to my personal liking, it's just my opinion, but not a whole lot appealed to me in this batch.

Posted by G-Man

@allstarsuperman: I just find it a bit disrespectful. Yes, everyone is entitled to their own opinions. I just don't see the point when people come in and say how much they don't like something. Why not be positive? Or the whole, "if you don't have anything nice to say..." bit? These artists do work very hard. These people have others willing to pay them for their art. But you feel it's necessary to deem it as just "okay." That's not even a critique. You're reducing it all to just a big old "meh." Which, again, makes me dying to see your skills.

Love that laughing fish reference. This feature is a great way to pass the time while waiting for comic con tickets.

@g_man: Very true, after looking through the thread again I realize I did overlook some stuff. I should rephrase what I meant by "meh, an okay week." I didnt mean the art in general sucks more this week or isn't as good from an art standpoint, I meant not a lot is "the superheroes I want, the way I want them drawn", personally I am just being too picky, I don't have anything against the actual artist themselves. Also I am a terrible artist there's no way my stuff is even internet worthy.

My favorites this week are from Todd Nauck and Peter Nyguen, but I liked everything else a lot too. What a spectacular week!

EDIT: I also really like Joel Gomez's RoboCop.

Skottie's Ant-Man is great. Always happy to see Booster and Skeets.

@g_man:

Whoa. Philip Tan had Penguin looking like a BAUS!

Posted by JeanRalphio

A little short on art today.

Posted by kilomac29

I laugh every time @g_man posts a Chris Giiarruso sketch card, and then says its already sold out. I imagine they're sold out because he bought them.

I had seen that Peter Nguyen stuff before, that is a really interesting concept.

This is some incredibly awesome art!

I really like the one that had the Phoenix, Kitty Pryde, Emma Frost, The Imperial Guard and Lilandra.

Posted by victorcheenoanleu

Rah! First Peter Nguyen's X-Men stuff is ridiculously GREAT! They need to hire him at Marvel immediately. Second, PHILIP TAN! My love for Mahmud Asrar's art just keeps growing & growing.

Some great x-men stuff this time around.

Dude, very cool. For me nothing will ever beat the classic (Kord) BB costume but this is pretty damn good. Kord looks like he's still the classic tech hero but the egyptian markings suggest maybe he has some mystic power ups.

Posted by ArtisticNeedham

@onemoreposter: Heh, that is actually the plan. In my concept Ted Kord knows he is just a guy in a suit of armor like Batman, but wants his enemies to not be sure. Is the Blue Beetle a human vigilante? An alien? A super being? (Got the idea when Green Lantern asked Batman what his powers were.) So Ted hopes to make his enemies unsure about how powerful he is. The Egyptian markings and fake scarabs, in my concept, are fakes to fool his enemies. He is still just a super genius who had been training in MMA fighting since he was 12. There is SO MUCH more in my own blog about this. :)

Posted by Tensta

Love all but Nord, Tan,Gomez, Young (lol) and Asrar (beautiful coloring) stood out. Thanks

Edited by Mucklefluga

So much awesome! Skottie Young kicks butt once again. I live Cameron Stewart's True Detective sketch, it's so cool.

Edited by Pokeysteve

Ahhh just noticed Nightcrawler's feet!!! WTF! Have they always been like that?!

Good stuff this week. Everyone is on their game.

Haha. I can dig man. I could see him using like a small hard light projectors (small because you wouldn't want to make that a focal point of the character) to simulate super powers here and there. Can't wait to see Ted in the new 52 and I just hope they don't screw it up. They could def take a cue from you.

Posted by Doctor_Malekith

@pokeysteve: Yeah, Nightcrawler's feet have been like that since the beginning.

Posted by TimeLordScience

@doctor_malekith: out of curiosity, did you create your screenname because of eccleston?

Posted by Doctor_Malekith

@timelordscience: I did, yes. I love Malekith/Thor, I love Doctor Who, and I'm a huge Eccelston fan, so that's why I picked my username. I see you're a Doctor Who fan too. Awesome Eleventh Doctor avatar!

What a great Joker by Marcio Takara.

Posted by BraveKnight99

That Joker by Marcio Takara is amazing. It's kind of like a more modern Joker in a way.......

Posted by dcfox

Is Dustin Nguyen a Supernatural fan? This makes me love him even more.

Posted by Fastestmanalive

@artisticneedham That is one bad ass Blue beetle costume. Hope they use something similar for the new 52.
