Awesome Art Picks: X-Babies, Captain America, Batman and More

The coolest comic art you won't see in comics.

Each week we search high and low across the internet for the coolest comic book art that you won't see in comics. The reason you won't see them in comics is because artists often draw sketches for fun or for commissions. They usually are kind enough to post them on their tumblrs or blogs to share with the world. Because they are so great we want to make sure everyone gets a chance to appreciate them.

This first piece sort of breaks the rules here. It's a variant cover for AvX by Skottie Young. But it's a Midtown Comics variant. That makes it more rare. And the art doesn't appear inside the comic. It's just so darn good, I wanted to post it one more time but now, without the logo.

That's not all Skottie posted on his website. Check out his Mason Savoy from CHEW and a zombie.

Agnes Garbowska posted a couple ADVENTURE TIME related pics on her Tumblr. Check out Catwoman and Tree Trunks and Princess Bubblegum.

There's been some talk about Huntress lately with all the Earth 2 news coming out. Marcus To, the artist on the HUNTRESS miniseries posted this sketch for a friend he recently did.

Paolo Rivera is constantly posting pics of commissions he did at NYCC. Looks like he's seriously someone you need to track down if you ever attend a convention he's at. Check out Lady Sif and Spider-Man.

Phil Noto took part in the "creator owned day" Thursday and posted a pic of Triggergirl 6 which is part of part of Image Comics’ Creator Owned Heroes which is out in June.

Dan McDaid posted a pic of Hulk in honor of the new trailer for The Avengers this week.

Mike Mayhew posted a lot of sketches covers and commissions this week. Check out Jean Grey, Captain America, Polaris, Mystique and Wolverine

Gene Gonzales posted a commission of Arisia he did at Megacon on his blog.

And finally, I came across Ron Salas' website where he posted some of his recent sketches. Check out Wally (Kid Flash), Batman and Hulk.

That's it for this week. I know I didn't post as many as usual (my hotel internet was pretty bad). Be sure to check out our next installment with more Awesome Art Picks.

Everything here is better than anything JRJ has ever done.

@Illuminatus: Hey! Watcha got against JRJ?

Personally, i absolutely love the old school classic art of Mike Mayhew posted here. That's some nice, powerful stuff.

He's a buffoon that couldn't properly draw a character's face if you put a gun to his head. The man survives in the industry because of his daddy's connections and that fact that he's a tool for writers when they don't want an artist with any sort of creative input whatsoever. He's worse than Liefeld in many ways.

Love TriggerGirl 6, Nightwing and Ron Salas' Hulk!

Captain America looks a little too feminine for my liking. I think its the eyelashes.

Look forward to this every week. Awesome stuff as usual!

Wow! I never would have dreamt anyone could feel that strongly against JRJ. Absolutely respect your opinion but couldn't disagree more. Even though i don't think JRJ is necessarily a pin up artist, meaning that an individual piece of his art is rarely as gob smackingly awesome as someone like Bryan Hitch, i think that JRJ is, and has been for a large amount of time an awesome story teller. I've been following him since the early eighties and, to me, he just improves and refines his story telling. I think comparing him to Liefield is just, well, bizarre really. I also think he far outstripped the influence of his father (brilliant in his own right) and is now just as much of a name in hte industry but purely on the strength of his own merits.

His abilities to actually tell a story waiver. He ruined Gaiman's brilliant run on Eternals with his sloppy artwork. At one point, I began to question if some child was hired by Marvel to secretly write this while JRJ lived off of his father's brilliance.

I wish that someone like Hitch or even Jim Lee had done Eternals. Hell, the illustrator of Thanos Imperative (the names escapes me) would've been the ideal artist for that book. But no. Marvel could care less about the brilliant writing and pacing and just sticks Gaiman with a hack.

I think it was Miguel Angel Sepulveda di dthe art for the Thanos Imperative. He's a pretty good artist but i still couldn't disagree with you more about JRJ, even his work on the Eternals, which i don;t think was his best but was still solid. Regarding JRJ living off his fathers work, i think its unrealistic to think that someone could have as long, as solid and as varied a career as JRJ has had by living off their fathers achievements. Sure, Rob Liefield is (somehow) stil working, but Rob Liefield has always been the exception to common sense and good taste.

I would love to hear Batman sing the blues! That man's got a lot of pain and heartache inside him and I think sometimes he needs a different kind of therapy than beating up thugs in alleyways...

Marcus To has got to be my favourite artist. Look at the level of detail on the shadows of Helena's hair and cape - that's RIDICULOUS.

More people should learn how good Marcus To and Robert Atkins are. To at least is a solid artist who doesn't seem to miss an issue.
