Awesome Art Picks: Superman, Damian Wayne, Captain Marvel & More

The coolest comic book art you won't see in comics.

Each week we gather up the coolest comic book art we can find that will never appear in actual comics. The reason they won't is because artists often do sketches for fun or commissions and post them on their sites, blogs, Tumblrs and Twitter pages. You can sometimes even arrange for commissions through those pages so be sure to check them out.

Philip Tan hasn't been updating his Tumblr but has been posting a bunch of sketches on his Facebook page. Check these out.

I came across this image of Superman on Adam Pollina's Facebook page. What has he been doing lately? He's using this as his "cover photo."

While Brett Booth is busy drawing pictures for Scott Lobdell, he's also posting the occasional sketch on his blog. Here's a couple he posted this week of Redbird (Damian) and Wonder Woman.

Last week we saw Denis Medri's 80s High School Star Wars redesigns. Here's one last one featuring Jabba, Emperor Palpatine and Grand Moff Tarkin. He also did a tribute piece for Elvis along with 70s vigilante style redesign of Punisher. I have a feeling we'll see more of those next week.

Our last piece is another tribute. As you know, Joe Kubert passed last Sunday. Here's a nice piece Francesco Francavilla posted on his blog.

I like the Damian Redbid & Batmen. Also enjoyed the Takara Catwoman, Robert Atkins' Joker, and Jeremy Roberts' JL. That's what I hope the JL movie looks like.

Heck, regarding the Justice League picture, I'd be happy if they all looked like that in the comics.

That Cyborg looks 20 times better than Jim Lee's--and I like Jim Lee.

Love Jeremy Roberts version of Cyborg. More streamlined and not just a bar river bar fridge with a head on top.

Phillip Tan's stuff is good but yet I don't love it. It always feels over drawn and it's too hard to tell what's happening. I like the stuff here though. His Harley is good beyond her broken hips but I like his pencil work better than his finished work.

I like Pollina's Superman! Styled yet strong.

Brett booth is a mess as per usual. His Red Wing is surprisingly fine despite the excessive and unnecessary lines and the tiny fists. But luckily the mast covers up most of the face so he doesn't have to try to draw it. Sadly this is one of his better pieces. A little barf came up at his Wonder Woman though. Blegh. That's not how people work. Her face is weirdly porportioned, her boobs are too high on her chest and hang too low. They look like squished balloons. She's got skinny arms and awkward hands. She looks like she's supposed to be kneeling yet kind of sitting. That's not working.

McKone is KILLIN IT on these though. His scarlet witch was beautiful and mercury was great!

Marcio Takara's stuff is always beautiful. I'd love to see him on a more high profile book.

Chris Brunham is pretty stylized but i do enjoy his work for what it is. His overly round faces bother me but that's about it. I like his inking style and coloring technique and his humor.

Ron Salas is very talented! I LOVE his inking style. His pieces come together so nicely with all the negative space and the heavy darks.

Dustin Nyugen is always one of my favorites. I love his style and his obvious love for the characters.

Michael Walsh's Joker looks perfect on that throne!

I haven't seen much of Asrar's work before but I do like it. It's a little...rigid but i really do like it.

Scottie young isn't my style but I appreciate his line work.

Jeremy Robert's JLA image is alright. I love the colors. But Wonder Woman stands out as being off. I don't know it's a good picture though!

I've always had a soft spot for Todd Nauck! Love it! Liking Robert Atkin's work and Paolo Rivera's art is beautiful as always. Same for Denis Medri.

I don't know why but i just don't like Agnes Garbowska's little characters. They're kinda cute but maybe it's the huge eyes that off put me. I think they're nice and whimsical but they don't do it for me like Nyugen's chibis. But i do love Chris Giarrusso's!

Are we still letting Freddie Williams II draw? Really?

@darth_jones: Art is very subjective. To assume that a particular artist is better than others or that there are absolute verdicts on certain artist's art is basically moronic. Theres a reason why Jim Lee, the supposedly most popular artist in the industry has lots of haters.

@sethysquare: True. I understand Art is subjective but there is such a thing as bad art. Look closely at some of Booth's work. There's a difference between style and total disregard for human anatomy.

And Jim Lee is a very talented guy but I dont love his excessive use of lines. That's personal taste but in some cases like Booth and Liefield there's just not the same quality of talent.

@darth_jones: I've looked very carefully and the only thing I can see in every pages of Titans and his art is that he likes to draw scowling facial expressions. Once in a while when the characters are smiling, it looks perfectly fine. That is just the artist style. Also there are many artist in marvel that blatantly disregard human anatomy. But because they done it in an "artistic" way, it is being over looked. I will get back to you the artist when I can recall them because I don't read marvel.

But as far as I know Guillem March and Ken Rocafort do disregard human anatomy at times and yet everyone loves their art. Also most of Jim Lee's complaint is that he is a terribly overrated artist and his art is very 90s (whatever it means) and dated.

So yeah, same complaints goes out to Booth and Liefeld. Let me give you an analogy of what is the difference between personal taste and fact.

Fact is Liefeld used to not draw feet, now he does.

Personal Preference is Liefeld's art is horrible.

So please, don't confuse fact and personal preference. You are most likely one of those people that conforms to whatever is acceptable online.

@sethysquare: I'd look again. Booth's figures are wonky with tiny fists and scruncy faces. He is very stylized, he's just not doing a good job.

I don't know marvel, i don't read it so I have no opinion on marvel artists. Jim Lee is good but i do agree, a little overrated. Lifeield still does avoid feet (see his latest hawkman cover for the preview on this site). And yeah it's "cool" to hate Liefeld but that doesn't make him a decent artist.

I understand the difference between fact and personal preference. In this case, Booth may be to your liking but I did seriously think you were joking at first because he's so bad. And i'm not just an internet conformist. I study illustration and human anatomy in college and I know the human body and I know good art. I'm sorry but your personal preference is just bad taste. He can't draw faces. He cant draw natural human poses or semi accurate musculature or porportionate hands. He has no taste when it comes to design (cougheveryteentitansdeisgncough) I was going to accept that you have your own taste in art and i have mine but then you called me a conformist and I just couldn't let you get away with thinking you're correct.

Google Brett Booth JLA and the first image with all the classics. Horrible. Every character looks like they're metling. The Green Arrow cover he did? That's the least accurate portrayal of how an archer would even begin to shot an arrow. ETC. And you can say "He just has his own style" all you want but there are countless artists whose style isn't necessarily "realistic" but they're not trying to be. Bruce Timm is a great artist and his work is very cartoony because it's meant to be that way and it still works. Jack Kirby, Darwyne Cook, same thing.

Okay fine, my bad for calling you an internet conformist.

I only said Brett Booth's art is gorgeous in particular because I saw people dissing his art and I just wanted to say that he is not that bad. Yes he isn't my favourite artist. I do not like every single panels that he did. But I appreciate every splash page that he did. For 2 issues that he didn't draw TT, and was taken over by Ig Guara many people online felt it as a drop in quality. Even me. Because as much as I like Iguare on Blue Beetle, I thought he didn't do a good job on Titans. I've seen some of Booth's work on Justice League and I did not particularly like what I've seen. But I felt that he improved alot in Teen Titans and I enjoyed his art enough that I would dare say I enjoy it. Just look at some of the vertigo artist and image artist. Many of their anatomy is completely impossible and extremely stylized. As long as the artist isn't doing photo realistic art and having completely wrong anatomy, I can always accept that. Scottie Young in particular, draws his art with completely wrong anatomy. His head is often too big, he chooses not to draw natural human poses and completely not accurate musculature or proportionate heads. This is exactly what you're saying about Booth. Yet you could say that you don't appreciate his style but not the same for Booth and Liefeld? You can't blame me for calling you an internet conformist.

Just because an artist chooses to have a certain style doesn't mean its bad, so you really need to not be so critical and judgmental on other people's taste. As far as his portray of green arrow. Bleh. So what he doesn't know what an archer's form is. He drew Ollie like he is an amateur archer, so what? Have you seen how Jeremy Renner poses as Hawkeye in Avengers? Just because an artist isn't familiar with a certain pose doesn't make him a bad artist.

Just because you think some artist are great and others aren't doesn't mean everyone needs to follow according to how you judge artist. I have friends who are graduates from art schools, studying fine arts. All of them have a different perception of what is good. One of my friend in particular hates Travel Foreman's art and called it extremely ugly when I showed her. But instead praised Ed Benes when I showed her a page on Red Lanterns. Jack Kirby, Darwyn Cooke and Bruce Timm all have a similar art style. They're all cartoony. Whereas Mignola, Rocafort and Yu does it very stylistic. Some people do not like the art of Mignola, Yu and Rocafort, because its over the top and way too stylistic. But choosing to be stylistic doesn't make an artist better or worse, its just a particular art style he chooses.
