Awesome Art Picks: Supergirl, Batman, Doctor Doom and More

The coolest comic art you won't see in comics.

Each week we like to highlight the coolest comic book art that won't appear in actual comics. The reason you won't is because artists often do sketches for fun or commissions and post them on their websites, blogs and Tumblrs. You can find info on pre-arranging commissions on some of their sites.

You might have noticed last week we didn't have an installment because of SDCC. But some really great art came out of the convention this week.

Todd Nauck is always super busy at conventions. Take a look at just some of the art he posted on his Tumblr.

Peter Nguyen was also at SDCC. Here's a few sketches he posted on his Tumblr.

Agnes Garbowska basically never sleeps at conventions in order to do all her commission requests. Heres a few recent ones she posted on her Tumblr.

Joel Gomez drew an Artemis for my daughter, which she loved. He also posted some other sketches on his Tumblr.

Tony Daniel was on our live show (with GameSpot) and gave away a couple pieces of art. He also posted some on his Instagram.

Freddie E. Williams II apparently was pretty busy at SDCC as well. Here's a bunch of art he posted on his TwitPic page.

Clay Mann posted some new commissions on his Tumblr.

Dustin Nguyen always cracks me up. If you ever get a chance at a convention, be sure to talk to him. He posted some new art on his Tumblr (and also included me in last week's BATMAN: LI'L GOTHAM #15).

Philip Tan was also at SDCC. Here's some commissions he posted on his Facebook.

Skottie Young posted some more daily sketches on his website.

Terry Dodson was also at SDCC. So far he only posted one commission on his Deviant Art Page.

Robert Atkins posted some more sketches on his blog. He also included a Deadpool sketch colored by Sean Ellery.

Brett Booth posted a Power Girl design he was messing around with on his blog. He also commented that he posted it so he'd be included here!

Paolo Rivera posted a couple recent commissions on his blog. Check it out for his process posts.

Chris Giarrusso posted a sketch of one of his characters, Princess Zula along with a couple by Gregg Schigiel on his website.

Daniel HDR posted some commissions on his Tumblr.

Marcio Takara posted some more commissions on his Tumblr this week.

Gabriel Hardman was also at SDCC. Here was there only Friday but hopefully we'll see more art from him. Here's a Doc Ock he posted on his blog.

You probably saw the images for J. Scott Campbell's designed Mary Jane statue at Sideshow Collectibles. Here's the art he did for it, posted on his Deviant Art Page.

And you probably saw the latest installment for the Mystery Art Challenge. This one was Wolverine and a Guitar. This one featured Peter Nguyen, Agnes Garbowska, Joel Gomez, Brian Buccellato and Todd Nauck.

Here's scans of their pieces.

That's it for this week. Hope you enjoyed!

I love Booth's costume for Powergirl but I don't like that he gave her Wonder Woman's body. Or has she always been drawn that thick?

Great stuff this week!!!!

Love Nauck's Supergirl.......and everything by Phillip Tan.......and Freddie Williams........and Dodson.......and Agnes. Told you they were all good.

For me its a three way tie between Tony Daniel, Freddie Williams, and Brett Booth for their Power Girl pieces They were spectacular!

Dodson and Booth! man such epicness.

What the hell is going on with Todd Naucks Punishers eyes?!? Is that some weird perspective thingy I am just not getting, or did he drew that really weird?

Apart from that really great stuff!

So much awesome.

An extra sized feature this week!

My mandatory "Oh Kara" must of course be mentioned.

...but there's something off about Sinestro's mustache...I it just me?

I can't stand Todd Nauck's style.Joel Gomez should get more work.

Why didn't booth redesign power girls costume? That's pretty decent

Posted by lifeboy

@ultimatesmfan: I know right. How do you feel about Ravens new52 look? I like it.

Edited by UltimateSMfan

@lifeboy: I like it too but I miss the hood.

Some great work this week. I wish a few artists would have posted their SDCC work to deviantArt so I would have had more for my picks this week.

This week reminded me how much we need more Power Girl.

At first I was thinking pretty nice stuff, then I just kept on scrolling and scrolling, what a fantastic week for art! The first one that really caught my eye was the first Storm one and the dark Gambit one, then there were too any awesome pieces to count!

Ahh Jean as the hellfire black queen how I miss that look.

Is the spiderwoman supposed to be Mary jane or May "mayday" parker?

Man I hope Clay Mann gets put on something really quickly after Gambit's last issue...I love his art style!!

That Power Girl redesign by Brett Booth is awesome!!

Edited by ChillinVillain

Nothing impressive before Clay Mann's art, but from that and onwards really cool stuff.

I've said it before, someone needs to hire Nauck for an X-Book yesterday! Any X-Book, please!

Edited by MrMazz

YAY for the YJ Aretimis she was my favorite character in the show.

Posted by G-Man

@mrmazz: my daughter let out a big "Yeeeessss!" when she got the art.

@ultimatesmfan: As far as the new52 powerGirl, I liked her full body suit over the current 1 piece bathing suit.

What did you think of the Superman 22 with the Queen Bee in it? I've yet to read it buti like the writer and the queen sounds interesting. I just wish rocaford was the artist for that but I'm still excited for it.

Usagi Yojimbo's looking like somebody's about to get fcuked up!

Posted by FckinZamorano

Alot of great art this week! The one that totally blew me away was the Skottie Young Usagi Yojimbo. That has always been one of my favorite books, and this pic is an amazing and dark take on the character!

Posted by Mr_Colossus

Always like to see my boy Colossus get a little love from such great artist.

Why doesn't Todd Nauck draw everything?!

Posted by Denn979

Damian Wayne

Edited by nappystr8

I usually like to list my favorites from the list, but the list is so long this week I don't think I can even recall all of my favorites much less list them. Two standouts that come to mind though are Skottie Young's Usagi Yojimbo and Freddie Williams II's Nightcrawler, but there are so many more. I'm not even a big fan of J. Scott Campell, but that Mary Jane is unbelievable. There's just too much amazing art this week by Todd Nauck, Freddie Williams II, Clay Mann, Marcio Takara, Philip Tan, Tony Daniels, Skottie Young, and others.

my word everybody brought their A-games this time around

Posted by Baberaham_Lincoln

Clay Mann shouldn't be on Gambit... he should be on an A-list X book.. seriously, that dude's art is as good as Coipel's with the right colouring. Also, Marcio Takara's time on the Flash could've looked better if they ALSO had the right colouring (water colours)...

Great stuff this week. Love Nguyen's Storm and Dazzler, Williams' Gambit, everything by Clay Mann (especially Banshee and all the X-Women), Tan's Cable potrait and Rivera's beautiful Diana!

I'm starting to doubt that there is any character Todd Nauck can't draw. Philip Tan did a knockout job on the Huntress and Sinestro. Marcio Takara's Gotham by Gaslight Batman and Black Widow look great. And Dustin Nguyen does an always outstanding job on any Bat character.

Wow that Loki.
