Awesome Art Picks: Ms. Marvel, Wonder Woman, Batgirl, and More

The coolest comic book art you won't see in comics.

Each week we gather up the coolest comic book art that you won't see in actual comics. The reason you won't is because artists often draw sketches for fun or commissions and post them on their websites, Tumblrs, blogs, and more. Some artists even pre-arrange commissions through their sites so be sure to check them out.

Todd Nauck drew this really cool Marceline cover sketch on his Tumblr. He did it for the Hero Initiative.

Dustin Nguyen posted a bunch of character sketches on his Tumblr this week.

Chris Samnee posted some new art on his blog and even added a little color to some.

Yildiray Cinar was part of some big news this week. He'll be drawing SUPERIOR IRON MAN. Here's a Black Bolt pic he posted on his Instagram.

Philip Tan posted some more sketches on his Facebook page.

Kris Anka posted some more sketches on his Tumblr and even took part in the new Captain America announcement by drawing a pic of Stephen Colbert as Falcon. Someone needs to fill up the void now, right?

Marcio Takara posted some more pre-con commissions on his Tumblr.

Agnes Garbowska is also getting ready for SDCC and posted some new art on her Tumblr.

Brett Booth posted two new sketches on his blog this week.

Francesco Francavilla, like most of us, is digging the new announcements and posted his version on his Tumblr.

Mike Maihack posted his take on Batgirl's new look on his Tumblr.

Kevin Wada posted some more sketches from HeroesCon on his Tumblr.

Mike Henderson posted a bunch of new art on his Instagram page.

Joel Gomez posted this Wolverine sketch on his Tumblr.

Peter Nguyen this Dani Moonstar WIP on his Tumblr.

Here's a Moon Knight sketch Brian Buccellato did a few weeks ago. This was a commission for Nick, who sent a shot of it my way.

Robert Atkins posted this Star-Lord sketch on his blog.

Mahmud Asrar posted a couple sketches on his Tumblr this week.

Tom Raney posted some new sketches on his Twitter page.

Mike McKone posted this Scarlet Witch sketch on his Twitter page.

Reilly Brown posted a couple new sketches on his Tumblr.

Rod Reis posted a few new sketches this week on his Tumblr. And you might remember when I posted his Moon Knight pic. That's actually a commission I got from him.

That's it for this week. Next week is San Diego Comic-Con. We'll likely see loads of new sketches from there and possibly another Mystery Art Challenge.

That new Batgirl costume looks like it's either anime or meant for the "young adult" section. Not for normal continuity.

Artists are really having a fun time with the new Batgirl costume. They all look great. Again, loving the Mike Henderson stuff lately. Just finished Masks & Mobsters.

Sorry to be negative, but I'm already tired of seeing that Batgirl costume...

Smash kawaii.

All those MK pics are freakin' awesome! Best things on here- besides Colbert as the Falcon- I nearly laughed my ass off! Especially when he has the eagle from the Pistachio commercials with him! lol But all the female "Thor" pics literally make me want to vomit molten vitriol. I usually love Francavilla's stuff, but I despise the female "Thor". The story hasn't even started yet & we're already seeing too much of her. Those pics ruined my usual zeal for the "awesome art piece" I usually enjoy every week. If they were tangible objects in my hands I would burn them in effigy, & I already want to go on a rampage like the Vikings of old at the very sight of them. Every time I see them I feel this Nordic anger bubbling up(& I'm not even Nordic!) & hear Amon Amarth songs in my head...

Yeah bat girls new costume sucks.

I guess I'm one of the few who actually likes Bab's new outfit... :(

Philip Tan's Harley Quinn is a good looking woman. I really dig Tan's shading, and he really brings appeal and respect to the character's appearance.

I do love Batgirls costume the only problem I have with it is she looks like she is 14 years old where I thought Babs was early twenties.

That Todd Nauck Marceline is so good. Also digging the Dustin sketches. Colbert Falcon is the right kind of silly. If only Mahmud were coming to a west coast convention, would love to get a con commission from him. On a similar note, I hope Agnes has fun with the nonsense I asked her to draw. My pick of the week is definitely that Marcio Takara Rogue. I have a feeling he may draw Powergirl soon as well.

@g_man That Rod Reis Moonknight is all sorts of amazing. The paints and inks for the background are crazy good looking.

It is designed for younger readers just like Ms Marvel

Wonder Woman should have had a gladiator skirt at the start of the New 52.

Loving Philip Tan's Harley Quinn. Costume looks fantastic, and he nailed her expression so very perfectly.

Batgirl costume looks nice in all of the art, but I can't help but feel like it would better suit Stephanie Brown or Bette Kane every time I see it. It just doesn't read "Babs" to me.

The Tan stuff is great as always, as are the Raney,Booth and Francavilla pics. That Storm pic is better than than her actual Marvel Now costume.

That Marceline cover was awesome!

I really like Todd Nauck's Marceline.

Agnes Garbowska's arts are really cute.

Philip Tan, Brett Booth, Mike Henderson's arts are really cool.

@war_killer: I love Bab's new costume. Give it awhile, people will get used to it and complain again once it's changed.

Awesome work!!

Waist no time getting a Thorgela/Ther/Angor drawing. And I always like seeing Tom Raney work.

Posted by MannEffest

Those Gandalf and Saruman sketches are really awesome :D

Posted by iaconpoint

@captain13: I've always thought a skirt made her look way better and way more badass than the bikini. Very Greek warrior like.

Man, the new Batgirl costume is so awesome

Don't worry, most sensible people do.

Philip Tan and Brett Booth are amazing artists. That is some seriously great work.

Wow. Marceline is hot.

I am so confused on how old Batgirl is in the New 52.

Hmmm...New 52 Lobo, then we immediately see Deadpool with a knife in his head. Coincidence, or did we just see Wade's reaction to DC cluster-f*cking the Main Man?

I made this too

:)

Gomez's Wolverine is old school gorgeous. I am in love.

@iaconpoint:

its for normal continuity its called a comic book...its no more young than Robin costume used to be.....Batgirl shouldnt be hardcore

Edited by fodigg

Hot diggity damn.

Nothing wrong with that.

Posted by stanIMatiON

Brett Booth is the freakin truth! Sick sick sick sick

Edited by iaconpoint

@barkley: "it's called a comic book" is the last bastion of a fool. Plenty of comics are hardcore including Batgirl who was shot and tortured by Joker in order to torture her father. Then Robin was beaten and blown up by said Joker, so get off your ridiculous high horse and do a little research about these characters before parroting moronic comments that are beneath you.

That's so weird, Rod Reis, I could tell she was Black Widow even before noticing her wrists. The white of her eye is a beautiful detail, nice work. His page says it's a digital sketch, wow.

Love the Koba pic

Edited by jaybefre

Ok... so can someone tell me how old is Batgirl, Barbara Gordon? I know these pictures are sketches from other artists but I've noticed that she is looking noticeably younger, like teenager young. I thought Barbara was at least in her early to mid 20s...?

Posted by Cavemold

Rod Reis Wins this week. That monkey pic is sick.

Posted by AWeekInGeekdom

Love Booth's WW sketch :)

Posted by Tradewind

Chris Samnee's Alfred is as inconspicuous as **** %)

Edited by Mrfuzzynutz

This is pretty wicked, the design for the knee guards and boots are the best parts, I would love to see Storm rock this!

Posted by Pokeysteve

Takara's Punisher is pretty awesome. I see Mr. Booth is still annoyingly talented...

Posted by miilkshake

@iaconpoint: On the contrary, Batgirl's new look is for those of us tired of seeing backwards-thinking art - like Philip Tan's, for instance. One of the few things DC's gotten right in recent memory. And while this alone certainly won't make up for the pin-up variants, it's at least a step in the right direction, and I for one am pleased with this one positive change. Hopefully it's a sign of things to come.

Posted by iaconpoint

@miilkshake: well, those are all your opinions and I disagree with most. I like the pinups and think making Batgirl a tween is backwards. But it's not as bad as what marvelnow! is doing with their big 3 so I can wait for it to fail and change back, and it will

Posted by miilkshake

@iaconpoint: Boo progress, am I right? Muscles and boobs is all anybody needs.

Thing, Scarlet Witch and Punisher...

The new Batgirl costume rocks! It seems like a lot of artists are having a blast drawing it. Just for the record, to everyone saying that it doesn't fit Babs, let's not forget that she used to have a lot of fun being Batgirl (sometimes more than Dick as Robin). It doesn't show through a lot these days, as she was never very "fun" as Oracle or the New 52 Batgirl. Is it okay with anyone if her life isn't torn to shreds every issue and god forbid, she has fun living her life? And I don't get this whole "tween" thing. She's in college in the new series with a different art style. And all we have seen are two official pics of the new costume. Whose to say it won't look amazing in book?
