Awesome Art Picks: Captain America, Bucky, Spider-Man and More

Some of this week's coolest comic book art you won't see in comic books.

You can't have comic book without art. Artists spend a lot of time drawing because, obviously, it's their job. They're not always drawing for their assigned books. Often they will draw and sketch other characters for fun, commissions or just to experiment. It really doesn't matter why they do as long as we keep getting to see their amazing artwork. Many artists have their own blog or Tumblr pages and like to post and share their work. It's simply way too good to go unnoticed. Each week we do a sweep of the internet to try to find the coolest art out there to ensure that everyone gets a chance to see it.

Our first comes from Joel Gomez. Joel is no stranger to Awesome Art Picks and it was this version of Captain America that really caught my eye this week.

Joel often uses inkwash and watercolors. He recently talked to us a little on the subject and shared some other pieces of his art. He also did a nice piece with Storm and Rogue.

== TEASER ==

Keep an eye on Joel's Tumblr for more.

Mitch Breitweiser has been busy on his page. Check out his sketches of Spider-Man, Red Skull, Captain America and Flash Gordon.

Sara Pichelli updated her blog page with this sketch of Hellboy. There's even a video of her progress on it. Check it out on her blog.

A couple weeks ago, Peter Nguyen posted a sketch of Supergirl and said it was part of something he was working on. Here's an update on that piece.

Paolo Rivera posted another watercolor image and don't forget, he'll be at New York Comic-Con doing commissions. It's not many that can make J. Jonah Jameson look good.

How about some Cliff Chiang art? Feels like we can't get the next issue of Wonder Woman soon enough. Cliff will also be at New York Comic-Con so be sure to look for him in Artist Alley.

Also check out his Batman: Black and White statue design.

What about Bucky Barnes? He's in the news recently...sort of...maybe. Over at Comic Twart, some different renditions were posted. This first is by Tom Fowler.

Here's a couple versions of the same image by Ron Salas. It's mentioned that Mike Hawthorne urged Ron to use the art as part of a wartime newspaper clipping.

You might be asking where's the Phil Noto art this week? Usually he posts a bit on his Tumblr. This week there was only really one. And it wasn't comic-related. But I'm posting it anyway. It's the Beatles from Rubber Soul.

Francesco Francavilla has been posting his quick spoiler-free tributes to the latest Doctor Who episodes. Here's his vision of "Closing Time."

And here's from the season finale, "The Wedding of River Song." Yikes! I still haven't watched it.

The final images come from DayBreakCG.com. You can consider these our honorable mentions since they're so dang cool. I actually saw the Cap one last week but wasn't sure if it was new or not. Then Norm pointed the website in my direction. So if you haven't already seen these or the others, check 'em out.

That's it for this week. You can find more Awesome Art Picks again next week.

The first CA pic, Hellboy and Supergirl are great.

Whats up with the batman statue design though? Why in the name of Wayne is he wielding a pair of pistols??? Some of those water colour pieces were awesome though and that Hell Boy sketch was pretty epic!

These are all really great.

A lot of nice watercolour pieces...

The last images were quite interesting....Cap looks bad-ass, Red Skull looks like he snuffed some joker-venom and Catwoman...I wished Nolan had used this costume in his movie I think it would fit very well...

Cliff Chiang based his design on the version of Batman in Brian Azzarello's First Wave, who, at that point, was very early in his career as Batman and thus still used pistols like he did for a short time when he first emerged in comics back in 1939 (he was also fine with killing criminals back then as well, but like the guns, this aspect of the character didn't last very long).

wow man, every single pick was a huge inspiration of awesome sauce. Best collection so far for this series.

Hellboy is great. So is JJJ. From the CGIs, I like Red Skull (he seems crazy) and Catwoman (this suit should have in the movie).

That Catwoman costume should've been use for The Dark Knight Rises.

Mohawk Storm is awesomeness!

Always love WWII Cap.

I would love to get some art when I go to NYCC but I don't think I will be able to buy anything let alone some :( Does anyone know how much people usually charge for commissions?

Smoke coming from JJJ jr:s head... = )

Notos image is comicrelated, actually...

cool!

Man, Joel Gomez and watercolors go hand and hand. Dig the Flash Gordon pic too!
Posted by Golden Cod

Is it just me or does the picture of Bucky with the giant missile seem... vulgar?

Posted by sj_esposito

Man.. Those CG images are so cool. I don't know why they can't look like that in movies. Batman: Dead End is the only time I've ever seen Batman's costume look close to the comics version. That Catwoman is perfect; that's what she should have looked like in TDR. Frumpy Ann Hathaway could never look that good though, so they'd have to find someone else.

Catwoman looks awesome

@kfhrfdu_89_76k: Yeah, I did link to them in the article. It's a nice piece as usual for Noto.

The first Captain America piece is outstanding! The J. Jonah Jameson is off the chain! They're all fantastic. Once again, thanks for sharing all the fantastic art with us, G-Man.

All of them are just too dang cool.

This is gotta be the best week of art ever so far.

Posted by SexualLobster

why is Cap's junk so dominant in that picture o.o

Posted by DMC

Christopher Nolan should really look at that CG Catwoman pic. Is it too much to ask for her costume to look like that, or the one in Arkham City?

First Cap needs to shave, Second Cap reminds me of the movie, Third Cap looks weird to me, not sure why.

First Red Skull looks bad(I mean in a good way if that makes any sense) and dangerous, Second Red Skull looks like evil incarnate.

All of this art is awesome though :D

I dig that "retro-ysh" Bat-Man concept!
