Avengers Line-Up Revealed

Marvel's fabulous five...

Thor, Iron Man, Spider-Man, Wolverine and Captain America.

They’re the new Avengers line-up, as this cover for Bendis and JRJR's first issue (released to IGN today) will evidence.

Fret not if you’re anxious about the exclusion of Spider-Woman and Hawkeye here. Beguiling Brian Bendis confirmed that the line-up isn’t limited to the five pictured abvoe.

Looks like they’re solidly going for a “Big Guns” style line-up. I remember that, for years, the Avengers typically differed from the JLA in that their line-up had (mostly) second stringers while the Justice League’s was all DC heavy hitters. Kurt Busiek broke the difference down with a baseball metaphor during his run -- the Avengers were like a baseball team that’d have the best catcher, the best short stop, the best right fielder and so on, while the JLA had only the best batters. For a long time, it was thus considered “impossible” for Wolverine or Spider-Man to be on the line-up. Well, since the success of NEW AVENGERS, I think that impossibility will be gradually forgotten.

Something - - call it a hunch - - tells me Marvel still has more rabbits to pull out of the hat, here.   We still don’t know who the Secret Avengers are, after all.  What do you think, Comic Vine community? Does this line-up work? Will there be more announcements?

-- Tom Pinchuk is the writer of UNIMAGINABLE for Arcana Comics and HYBRID BASTARDS! for Archaia Comics.   Watch out for the HYBRID BASTARDS! hardcover collection this March - - available for pre-order now on Amazon.com.

"god i hate wolverine, and the worst part is im sure marvel knows how much his being on every team pisses us off,but they sell books so they dont care. you know for a while i thought that after bruce wayne died wolverine would have become the next batman lol, its the only thing left for him to do.  special preview  2011 wolverine joins the JLA. 2012 wolverine kills al simmons and becomes new king of hell 2013 wolverine replaces barbra walters on the view "

I would probably start watching the View, LOL!

This reminds me of what they did with New Avengers, they pretty much got the most popular characters and made them into the Avengers.

got to say im rather disappointed in Marvel for launching an ad campaign where we were supposed
to be wow'd by the new members of a new team replacing the New Avengers, only for it to end up
being Cap, Spider-Man, Wolverine, Clint, Spider-Woman, Thor and Iron Man, which is the old New
Avengers line-up, with Iron Man back in the roster, and Luke traded for Thor, and done by the same
writer and artist nonetheless. so why the secrecy, they could have just cut the useless foreplay and
said New Avengers relaunches to signify the beginning of a new age.

sorry, seems really expected. kinda lame. "I'm shocked, Wolverine, gasp" this isn't a surprise, they put all the best together again, eh, to strong of a team takes away the challenge

In other words, this will be Bendis' reboot of New Avengers #1 but without the Sentry (thank god). Pass! I'm jumping on with Brubaker's Secret Avengers.

Honestly, after reading New Avengers and getting used to their underground status, I think the new lineup will be somewhat of a letdown for me.  I really am not interested in having Iron Man back on the team, @ least not yet.  I love Thor, but I'm gonna have to get used to such a heavy hitter being on the team.  I am disappointed that Luke Cage is being used in the Thunderbolts title instead as his banter with Spidey was one of the main reasons that New Avenger was my favorite comic over the last coupla years.  I just don't find this lineup "realistic" as far as fitting into the current continuity of Marvel based on everything that has gone down in the last few years.  Even with Dark Reign, I kinda feel like it would be a natural reaction for Spidey and others to still be somewhat distrustful of Stark.  Of course, I have always loved the Avengers and am always excited about it being treated as a high profile book and I was upset all those years when it played second fiddle to the X-Men, but if Marvel wants to run with this "All Star" line up, I'll go with it...@ least I'll always have the memories of the New Avengers, a tilte that made me finally become a fan of Steve Rogers after about 30 years of reading comics.

I am enjoying Siege, but I am not ready for Dark Reign to be over.

NO!!! Spider-man is not supposed to be on a real Avengers team...neither is Wolverine...and not for nothing but isn't Wolverine busy???? X-force and X-men business over on Utopia should keep him not only busy but on the other side of the country.  Why not put Spider-woman and Tigra if you want those types of characters on the Avengers??  And they said this isnt the final roster? So why show it?  We knew three would be there and most people don't want the other two to be there so why even put out this pic?

@Toastalchemist:
Wolverine is at overkill for me too. I love him but I am SO sick of him. Can Marvel have a successful group comic without him on it? "All Signs Point to No!" Way to go. We don't need great story telling; we just need Wolverine.

why Spider-man?!?!?!?! Why can't they leave him out of the Avengers for once.... he's nothing but a nuisance to the team... a whinig, obnoxious little nuisance.

...and where's spider-woman? wasn't she "an avenger" too?

Does anyone else think that Wolverine and SPidey are now goin to be THE Avengers... because of the possible Movie... i mean...

Cap(The 1st Avenger)
Nick Fury asked Nick if he thought he was the only super hero
Then Iron Man asks General Ross if he knows that there making a team or something
Thors Coming out...

so they already have Cap,Thor,Iron Man, and Hulk movies... so no need to introduce them
but
will we really get a Ant-man(Pym), Hawkeye, quicksilver,Ms Marvel, wonder man, or a Vision movie... to introduce them, when we already have SPidey and Wolvie movies...

think about it... With ^^^ that picture... most have had movies... and 2 will have movies thats a team of 5 Avengers.... then add HULK... thats 6 Avengers for the Movie...

6 Avengers... Oh and On Iron Man 2... Black Widow is there...
that would be 7...

and on the Official Movie... They can introduce one to two more characters... Pym? Wasp? Hawkeye? Vision...

its quite simple if u ask me

All male lineup... well, so far. Yeah, typical of Marvel since they really don't have a 'Wonder Woman-caliber' superhero. I know it has been commented on, but this art is horrible!!! There is no definition to their bodies and Thor and Iron Man both look like stone golems. Are those needles coming out of Wolverine's arms? These artists should be ashamed of their work and Marvel should be ashamed of passing this off as an intro poster/possible cover.

Spider-Woman's on the team, they'll probably put one more woman in the team, hopefully. Also this is the cover for Avengers #1

I hope the Avengers get their ass kicked for all their mindless testosterone and sexism. ¬_¬

Probably, but she'd still be second-rate behind the stars of the Avengers
It's absurd.

@AngelFrost: Here's hoping that Iron Man 2 will do Black Widow some justice! She's not my favorite out of all the Marvel ladies, but I'm still hoping she will win fans over. It was satisfying to see Pepper Potts represented well in Iron Man... definitely the best leading lady in a superhero film since Michelle Phifer rocked as Catwoman.

Oooh sorry, Mary Jane!
Posted by AngelFrost
@Gothic Storm:  Without Emily Blunt as Black Widow, there can be no justice ... *sobs* But I did enjoy Pepper Potts. ^_^    Nobody can be as good as Michelle Pfiefer was in Batman ... now that is an amazing casting, A little out of the box, but it worked in the end.

@AngelFrost: True enough. It's a shame we as fans can't have a vote on the matter. But then again, who would've thought in their right minds that Heath Ledger would have made such a great Joker (*cough* even though Jack is still better *cough*) or that Robert Downy would be the perfect Iron Man? I laughed my head off when I heard that Robert was cast as Marvel's 'tin man'... Who else better to play a superhero who has a good sense of humor and struggles with an ego and alcohol?  Perhaps Emily Blunt could play Wasp or even Spider-Woman... (if they ever got that far with the Avengers sequels to have Jess in them).

But alas, back to the topic... The Avengers is such a 'Fiesta de Chorizo' it's ridiculous.
Edited by AngelFrost
@Gothic Storm:  I always knew Heath Ledger would be amazing.  I've been a fan of his for many years now, so when I heard he was cast as the Joker, I was sooo excited and he didn't dissapoint.  & yeah, RDJ  did change my opinion of him.

Haha, I know, totally!  They need some chicks in the group to stop them from porking eachother. ¬_¬ I always knew Thor was gay.

Goldilocks and his three bears... errr... four bears! Now we know why Odin let's him stay on Earth. Now if he could only do something with Loki and those gay horns...

I really just don't like John Romita juniors art at allll. Haha

Wolverine, a serial killer, in a Avengers team  ???
Spider-Man, the bad luck, also ???

It's not a team of super-heroes, it's a team of money makers !!!

*Sigh* You know, starting to think we should just put Deadpool in there too, as long as we're using characters solely based on popularity. Spider-Man and Wolverine never fit and the "witty banter" they were introduced for never really came across as anything other than forced. Personally I miss the second stringers like Firestar and Jack of Hearts. Hmm, come to think of it, bring Songbird into the Avengers finally would be neat. But no, we get the traditional ones which is kinda like Vanilla in my opinion, good but so many better flavors out there.

Posted by blackkitty

I just want to know, Iron Man made a clone of thor which killed Black Goliath, he treated all his friends like criminals and locked them away in the same facilities the villains were in, and somehow everything's okay now? Why would anyone trust Tony again? I mean I seriously can't think of a single reason they shouldn't lock him in a cell and throw away the key.

I'm just happy that Romita Jr. is doing the artwork. He's one of the few artists in the industry that actually hits his deadlines.

Probably 2 left, they need girls to balance the sausage fest. But they have enough muscle, they need more support.
