Avengers Line-Up Revealed

Marvel's fabulous five...

Thor, Iron Man, Spider-Man, Wolverine and Captain America.

They’re the new Avengers line-up, as this cover for Bendis and JRJR's first issue (released to IGN today) will evidence.

No Caption Provided

Fret not if you’re anxious about the exclusion of Spider-Woman and Hawkeye here. Beguiling Brian Bendis confirmed that the line-up isn’t limited to the five pictured abvoe.

Looks like they’re solidly going for a “Big Guns” style line-up. I remember that, for years, the Avengers typically differed from the JLA in that their line-up had (mostly) second stringers while the Justice League’s was all DC heavy hitters. Kurt Busiek broke the difference down with a baseball metaphor during his run -- the Avengers were like a baseball team that’d have the best catcher, the best short stop, the best right fielder and so on, while the JLA had only the best batters. For a long time, it was thus considered “impossible” for Wolverine or Spider-Man to be on the line-up. Well, since the success of NEW AVENGERS, I think that impossibility will be gradually forgotten.

Something - - call it a hunch - - tells me Marvel still has more rabbits to pull out of the hat, here.   We still don’t know who the Secret Avengers are, after all.  What do you think, Comic Vine community? Does this line-up work? Will there be more announcements?

-- Tom Pinchuk is the writer of UNIMAGINABLE for Arcana Comics and HYBRID BASTARDS! for Archaia Comics.   Watch out for the HYBRID BASTARDS! hardcover collection this March - - available for pre-order now on Amazon.com.

I like it. I would rather have Ms. Marvel than Spider-Woman, and anybody over Wolverine. But its a decent line up.

Romita Jr.'s art is either brilliant or poor, in my opinion.

Bucky looks amazing there, but he didn't in the teasers. Thor doesn't look great there, nor does Iron Man, but they did in the teasers. I suppose it just depends. I'm curious as to see who else is on the team.

The combination of the premise of the "Age of Heroes", Bendis on writing, and JRJR's unpalatable artwork make this immediately very unappealing.

"

Completely Agree. I like Spidey a lot better when he's alone. In fact, I think it would be cool if they could go back to the old days when the Avengers didn't know much about Spider-Man and was viewed as a villain. As for Wolverine, I'd like it a lot better if they just stuck him with the X-Men and let him be.

They don't need Wolverine to sell this book and it makes no sense at all to have him on the team. He's part of a black ops mutant hit squad, it's bad enough he's part of the x-men's public team but to be part of the avengers is daft. It doesn't fit in Wolverine's character, he'd never put the avengers public image at risk.
Just makes no sense at all

Sick to death of Wolverine on the Avengers, and I'm sick to death of Bendis on the Avengers. I loved Busieck's Avengers, and his methods. Bendis bores me. His stories, or lack there of, bore me. This is one of the many reasons I'm not reading anything by Marvel anymore. That, and how they caved to the tea baggers.

I hope this isn't the full roster, I can't wait to see who else they'll bring into the fold. But as the team stands now, I'm not exactly siked.

ROSTER: Right now  it's basically 5 "New Avengers" plus Thor.
A part of me wants to see Bendis work with different/new characters than his usual selction. But the work he's put into the Sentry (of late) and Noh-Varr has me worried about how these characters might be portrayed.

Also I'm not feeling Clint Barton as Hawkeye on this team, sorry.
I agree with IGN about giving Clint and Mockingbird their own series working off the original pitch of Clint & Bobby as the Mr. and Mrs. Smith of the Marvel U.

ART: On one hand I appreciate Romita Jr.'s classic comic artstyle. I enjoyed his artwork The List : Punnisher and Siege: Stormiing Asgard H&V. His artwork fits the "Heroic Age" perfectly, but not an Avengers book IMHO. They should have had Romita do the art for the Heroic Age books instead.

Sorry for speaking out of line but what is this about? just the continuation of the comic, because I'd rather here about the roster for a Bruce Timm and Brian Bendis making of the Avengers cartoon. I'm sorry for being a little cold but I'm not that excited over a the announcement of this for a simple comic book series. Now back to that cartoon, I think it really should be called "New Avengers" and should absolutely be written by Bendis and directed by Timm, it could be a saving grace for Marvel.

I notice Spidey has stuck a web line to Mjolnir.

wow..Wolverine in the same book (because this is actually NA, im not fooled) that he was a core member of
since it began, when he already is a core member in another book. and as weird as it sounds, they have him
as the main character in his own book. i mean, a popular character in multiple books...its just such an atrocity.
i cant believe they would go and do the same thing they were already doing and leave things unchanged.
then again i would be hostile if they changed things as well. then again im probably just a little to nitpicky for my
own good, and i mean really. lmao.

seriously its New Avengers retitled and renumbered. Cap, Wolverine, Spider-Man, Hawkeye, Spiderwoman,
Iron Man is back, Thor replaces Luke. i dont see anything to be excited about in the positive or negative since
nothing has really changed.

Remember this statement by Bendis?

"Here's what I'll promise – coming out of Siege, there will be a big change to the Avengers' books line-ups and rosters; as big as it was after Avengers: Disassembled."

If there are still unknowns about Bendis new title I doubt if it can raise this book & roster to an "Avengers Dissassembled" shake-up.

Amen! Wolverine is already in Uncanny, Astonishing, X-Force and Origins. How the heck does he find the time?  Spidey should just be a loner.

I'd go with Cap/Bucky, Iron Man, Thor, Hawkeye, Spider-Woman, Ms. Marvel and Hank Pym.

I don't know why everyone is down on Spider-Man being in the Avengers. Frankly  the character works best in a group dynamic, and Bendis is far and away better at writing him than any of the dozens of guys they have doing ASM (when did they all forget to make him witty?).

Everyone's right about Wolverine, though. I've liked him in Avengers (very much looking forward to Astonishing Spider-Man & Wolverine), but X-Force is the best fit for him.

I've always been iffy on JRJR's work, but what really gets me about this is his Iron Man. I just do not see it working. The new suit looks good, but it looks like it should be crisp, streamlined, clean. JRJR's characters are ALWAYS blocky (just look at 'em up there!), which worked well enough for World War Hulk, but not here.

Heroic Age? Seriously, we're back in the all-male, caucasian age. I thought we were moving forward.

Luke Cage should have stayed on the team, let someone else lead the Thunderscrubs (Why not Hawkeye? He started out as a villain, if I'm not mistaken).

Also Ms. Marvel should have stayed, so Spider-Woman wouldn't be the only woman.

Is it too early to shine a light on DOCTOR VOODOO? I don't think so. Lovin' his series, btw.

Wow!!  Really!!!  I mean that I just couldnt figure out how to get MORE Spidey and MORE Wolverine into MORE books.  How can Marvel EVEN THINK about putting out a title WITHOUT those two???  So Many NEW AND ORIGINAL storylines to be explored.  Thank God the higher ups at Marvel have decided to continue to include those two guys in another Avengers book.  I mean who would EVER BUY a Marvel comic without them?  Crisis averted.  Sales will BOOM!!!!!!

I am intrigued to see Cap, Iron Man and Thor together again.  I kind of assumed they would have tried to go back to the original line-up so this is a surprise.  I wonder what there first mission will be and who they will be facing off against.

I am curious though about the Captain America issue and who will be under the mask.  I hope it is Steve, but that begs the next question, what about Bucky  He has really come into his own oer the last two years.

Maybe the Secret Avengers will be the same as the Regular Avengers only the behind the scenes Secret Operative Style.  Like I am sure once Norman Osborn gets figured out by the American's, the Avengers are going to have to regain the public trust all over again.

Spider-Man and Wolverine on the Team Though not a great way to start a PR campaign in the World of Marvel.
