Avengers 1959 Return in New Mini-Series This Fall

If you didn't get enough of this 'first' team of Avengers, you can get more this October.

Just recently in the pages of New Avengers, we discovered the secret history of the Avengers. We discovered that the original Avengers were not Thor, Iron Man, Ant-Man, Wasp and Hulk.

For reasons not fully clear, the government had Nick Fury gather a team of mercenaries and they operated under the name of the Avengers back in 1959. The result of their mission was revealed and had repercussions when Mockingbird's life was on the line.

Spinning out of the pages of New Avengers, this October we will see Avengers 1959, a five issue mini-series. It will deal with this unique group of super-powered individuals in the post-World War II era including Kraven the Hunter, Sabretooth and Namora. They will be back together to fight threats in New York, Madripoor and everywhere in between. Will they be able to operate together without killing each other?

The series will be written and drawn by Howard Chaykin. This is what he said about the project.

I'm grabbing what feels like a brass ring here, with the opportunity to do an untold story of the lost years of the Marvel Universe. In a follow up to the sensational stuff laid out by Brian Bendis in NEW AVENGERS, we'll follow Nick Fury and his Avengers around the world as they track down and take down super powered survivors of the Third Reich--as their ever effort is countermanded by a mysterious agency with a dark agenda of its own.

I have admit, when I first read them together, I thought about how I'd love to see more with these guys. Maybe Marvel heard my wishes. It's on sale in October and will have a $2.99 cover price.

Isn't it a little soon to flood the stands with "Avengers" titles, considering the movie isn't until next summer, Marvel?

already dont like the art.... a no buy for me

Excited about this...have been enjoying these stories

Wait, so this is the stories from 1959 or the team is reunited in modern day time?

I love the idea of this series. I think that it is going to be a fun and really good comic. The only thing I don't really like is that Thor, Iron Man, Hulk, Ant Man, and Wasp were not the original Avengers. I feel that they should be because they were though to be for such a long time. But I'll get over that if this series proves to be a great one.

It was boring reading about them in the New Avengers series, and I also hate the art.  I don't really see how this mini-series could sell very well.

they couldnt have come up with a different name?

the concept is good but did they really have to be "Avengers"

err I hated it. It ruined the other story that was running in New Avengers. Kinda boring and awful art. But it seems Blonde Phantom is joining which is intriguing...

Would've sold me until I read " The series will be written and drawn by Howard Chaykin."  Nope, no thank you.  His art is TERRIBLE.

I agree 100% with you coolbeans.  If the story that was stretched out WAAAAY to long in New Avengers had been more worthwhile in the end, then maybe I could be interested.  Bendis killed that for me and I am not a fan of the art either.

Plus...not a fan of the "original" Avengers team having Sabretooth and Kraven the Hunter on it.  Way to retcon something that didn't need it.

mmmm...  NO

Howard Chaykin's art can ruin even the coolest of books.

Hated it. It ruined the other story and the name of Avengers.

interesting i guess, but I think I'll pass. The retro-Avengers didn't really excite me that much.
I'd rather have another Atlas book than this.

The idea of calling these guys "Avengers" is bull.  Kraven on the team is bull.

But most of all, I can't stand the artist.  Everyone looks like a poorly drawn frank castle.

Terrible... no, thanks...

I'll keep an eye on this one, might pick it up for the hell of it.

Not interested, but I'm glad they're getting their own limited series. That hopefully means they won't show up in New Avengers again and drag down another story arc.

It would be great to see this series ongoing.

Yeah I heard about this and already started it in the forums a few hours ago!!

Interesting to say the least!

THAT'S WHAT THAT SECRET HISTORY CRAP WAS ABOUT? DAMN YOU TO HELL, BENDIS! WHY CAN'T YOU JUST VANISH AND STOP MURDERING THE MARVEL UNIVERSE!

I like the idea of Kraven on the team, but otherwise pass.

Even though Namora is in this.. i doubt i'll be picking it up.

Love the idea but i cant stand Howard Chaykin's art. He has to be the worst artist I've ever seen. I detest the way he draws characters faces.

Avengers First Class? Great.

That art is f**king horrible.

I won't pick this up becaue I didn't like the story in New Avengers
Posted by jubilee042

Posted by carnivalofsins00

UGH! The art is such a huge turn off for me.

Why does Chaykin have to make everyone so chunky.

Those aren't the "first" Avengers.......

 THESE ARE THE FIRST AVENGERS!!!!
I wish that instead of trying to make us believe that YEARS AGO there was a random team called the Avengers, even though it still doesn't explain how this team is connected to the ORIGINAL Avengers or how this has anything to do with the team's formation. Instead of trying to rewrite history, Marvel should simply take the ALREADY established history and just tweak it to more fit into the current times, not this crap of an idea.... -__-

I actually liked the Superia/New Avengers arc for the most part. But the 1950s Avengers did nothing for me.

"Everyone looks like a poorly drawn frank castle."
The best way ANYONE could ever describe his artwork...

@TheMess1428: The thing said  "They will be back together to fight threats in New York.."
so the team from long ago is reuniting from the looks of it.

Oddly, I'd be very interested in stories LIKE THIS.  Except, they kill it by calling them "Avengeers".

If they were unnamed, it would be awesome.
