'Arrow' Episode 1.03 "Lone Gunmen" Discussion

Arrow is determined to bring justice to his city.

Ollie's mission to clean up his city continues. Next on the list in his dad's book is James Holder. As he confronts his target, a sniper takes him out from afar. Who was the target, Holder or Arrow? As he patches himself up, he discovers that he was poisoned by the shot that grazed his arm.

This means Deadshot is in town.

No Caption Provided

While normally we'd do a full episode recap, sadly to say, that won't be happening this week.

There has been a few developments in this episode. We see more of Ollie on the island. His sister continues to act up. She tells Ollie about Laurel and Tommy hooking up while they thought he was dead. And it turns out that Laurel actually can kick some butt. Of course there's plenty of Deadshot action.

Here's the official synopsis of the episode:

DC COMICS’ VILLIAN DEADSHOT SETS HIS SIGHTS ON ARROW — Oliver (Stephen Amell) is surprised when someone shoots and kills one of his targets. As his plan is to bring people to justice vs. outright killing them, Oliver doesn’t appreciate the help and searches for the gunman. He soon learns that the man, Deadshot (guest star Michael Rowe), is taking out businessmen who are scheduled to bid at an auction on an energy company and Walter (Colin Salmon) is one of the bidders. Realizing he can’t protect his family and stop Deadshot at the same time, Oliver enlists Detective Lance’s (Paul Blackthorne) help, but his plan has dire consequences. Meanwhile, Laurel (Katie Cassidy) and Tommy (Colin Donnell) get caught in an awkward situation with Oliver. Willa Holland, David Ramsey and Susanna Thompson also star. Guy Bee directed the episode with story by Greg Berlanti & Andrew Kreisberg and teleplay by Marc Guggenheim & Andrew Kreisberg (103).

Feel free to discuss the episode below. Here's a bunch of images.

What did you think of the episode?

@wessaari: It was great to see her kickin' butt but seemed pretty strange after her lack of doing anything last episode in her apartment. But I'll take it. This is more what she should be like!

Definitely a wonderful episode, though I wanna know more about the strange arrowman who seemed to nurse Ollie back to health. And I don't know but...was it just me or did there seem something bittersweet about Arrow taking out Lawton so easily? It seemed too easy and now Deadshot's gone. I mean if this was a movie I'd be like "oh hellz yeah"...but three episodes in and Queen already takes down a major DC villain? Come on!

4/5 for me...

The show is making me pretty happy so far. It has that CW cheese after-flavor but I have to say it is good and entertaining. I would love to see him going off on someone, Ollie has always had a mouth and I want that in the show. As for Dinah showing us she isn't just some damsel in distress, well, that was icing on a delicious cake. Man I hope she becomes Black Canary. All in all, a great episode.

@RedheadedAtrocitus: I'm willing to bet that isn't the last we see of Deadshot, the arrow didn't look that deep, maybe he just lost an eye or maybe his eye piece stopped the arrow from doing any serious damage. It was just way too easy there has to be more to it than that.

Nice character insights into Diggle this episode. He's quickly become my favorite character. This show is growing on me. Hated Deadshot's look but other than that I liked the episode.

Good episode. Not as good as the last two weeks though. And, if you want to complain that the fight with Deadshot at the end was over too quickly, you should've known what you were getting into. This is CW. Have you ever watched Smallville?

Honestly I might accept it if he loses an eye but if they say his little eye piece protected him I'm going to be annoyed. That little eye piece can not stop a whole arrow head going into it! But I agree how he took out deadshot seemed too easy for this to be their final encounter.

Great episode, my favourite so far. Can't wait for the fallout of Diggle waking up at the end.

On Dinah fighting, I think there is a difference between having your home unexpectedly raided by armed men and kicking some rich guys ass from behind.

Wes Anslem- pedophile that murdered Deadshots son in the comics
Andy Haskell - Lawyer for Anslem

James Bolders

Rob Murdoch

both worked on Smallville

also, with Diggle saying his brother was killed, I wonder if Andy Diggle (the tattoo on Lawyon) will be brought up as being his brother?

I dont think Lawton is dead. I can see him losing the eye, and getting a cybernetic eye replacement

I'm digging the series so far. The island stuff is what has me watching every week, I really want to know more of what happened on it. The only part that bugs me a bit is that I always think of bruce wayne/batman when he's out digging bullets from walls/analyzing shell casings/making night club appearances etc.

Also it would of been cool if Lawton had his mustache haha

@sentryman555: The only reason I even mentioned that as a possibility was the lack of blood but it is a TV show so that could have just been avoided. And the can actually give him a cybernetic eye and keep it semi realistic since they technically have actually invented devices like that now. In real life they haven't been quite perfected but TV is pretty famous for thinking tech is a bit further along than it actually is.

@joshmightbe: Actually I thought about it more and thought maybe it could be cool if they use this as an excuse to give him the full mask. I don't know why he'd need a full one but they could say it has something to do with internal damage in his head or something......or maybe I just want him to have it lol

Yeah, I'd prefer him with mask too, and it wouldn't be so hard... but oh well... *shrugs*

Overall, with this show gets a bit better, at least now some characters act like their originals, not just being some guys with familiar names. Was nice to see Deadshot just outright assume that Arrow just an assasin, and the dude himself couldn't even retaliate exept "Well you're getting an arrow in the eye, see how I'm different NOW?".

Scene in the club apparently was thrown in just to please Black Canary fans - "See? She can kick some ass, by ambushing an unsuspecting guy from behind, who didn't even resist! Ain't she awesome?"

I didn't like that they killed Deadshot off so quickly in the series, he could have been a great villain to return as he mirrored Ollie in a way, as stated in the show. But other than that I loved the new episode.

The fact that Deadshot had a Diggle tattooed on his chest, coupled with John Diggle's comment about his brother being "out of the picture" leads me to believe Deadshot isn't done. Not quite sure how they would go about bringing him back, but I think they will.

The only issue I had with this episode was Ollie's behavior right before the auction assassination attempt. The way he spoke to Det. Lance and then Diggle was...weird.

Show just keeps getting better imo. The Arrow/Deadshot encounter at the end was epic. The island flashbacks remind me of Lost with how mysterious they are. For some people I know that being like Lost in any way is a bad thing, but I loved Lost so it works for me. I'm glad he finally has someone to share his secret with in Diggle.

This show is getting better and better! I didn't think Dinah was going to break out and kick some a**, but hey it worked for me. I wonder how they will work Merlyn into becoming GA's archery nemesis. Then again I am sure it will be later in the season when we see the bad sad break out in him. We only have two more episodes until Deathstroke is supposed appear. I believe he is going to be a character through out the season. I mean he is Deathstroke! I didn't mind the death of deadshot, or is he dead? I think this is the best Ep. so far. Good show, bloody good show!

Oy, watching this episode was frustrating to me--not because of the story, but because my local CW affiliate had a ton of technical difficulties yesterday night. For the first 20 minutes of the episode, the music and sound FX were present, but the dialogue wasn't audible. Then for 10 minutes things went black as they lost input. When they finally got their picture back, there wasn't any sound at all, not even in the commercials. Sound didn't return until the last 10 minutes of the episode, and it fluctuated.

@G-Man: I think that's more because she could see who she was dealing with in the club while as the attack at her place was a surprise by some people who she knew were very lethal killers. When confronted with either an assassin surprise or picking a fight with a spoiled rich kid, i'm not gonna blame her for picking the battle that she could actually win todo some damage.

Did anyone else think it was strange that Oliver takes deadshots computer to this IT girl, says to her he is having problems with it and this entire incident did not raise any red flags? I mean come on. 1. Bullet holes in a laptop. 2. a tough book being used by what everyone knows him as being a party animal, When the most he would use is a high end cell phone that allows him to tweet and check his facebook and take instagrams. 3. He asks the girl what the blue print is of, when this is supposedly "his" laptop. Even if I was downloading blue prints to something I know exactly what blue prints I have on my computer.

I'm more curious about the Brutslav organization. are they good? are they an crime syndicate? if ollie is high up in there and he did that while on the island, then why didn't they give him a ride back instead of making him wait all that time?

If I understood you correctly, you mean "Bratva" ["Братва"], right? That's also known as "Russian Mafia". The word is, when Italian Mafia wants you dead, they kill you, when Russian Mafia wants to kill you - they kill you, your wife, your kids, your mother-in-law and your dog. The tattoo that Ollie showed looks a bit like prison tattoos - like ones drawn on Mikki Rurk in Iron Man 2 - so he was bluffing his ass off. Heh, commendable attempts at russian though, I'm native speaker and I've almost understood them. Now I remember how Micheal Weston spoke russian, now that was the work of professional.

Good Episode. I did not like how Deadshot was so easily dispatched. I hope that this is not a trend where major villians show for a time meet and get killed. I am glad that Ollie's body guard John Diggle will know who he is. You always need a new character to develop that you can introduce into the comics. I hope that Deadshot makes another appearance later this year or next year and the arrow through the eye gives him the opportunity to look more like the Deadshot of the comics.

Decent episode but the acting is just deadly. They need better actors. Pronto.

It feels too much like a soap opera sometimes, Speedy's rebelliousness is really unconvincing and Laurel's determination seems so contrived, and Oliver is super handsome but even in the voiceovers are really not where they should be...which is really saying something. I mean, CW, get a fricken clue and hire some stage actors or something - they're dirt cheap and 10 times as talented.

At this point they've got to stick with Sam Amell but Katie Cassidy is killing me in the worst way. Why exactly is she a lawyer anyways? If anything, Dinah Lance has always been a bigger character than Oliver and really formidable (perhaps even moreso than Oliver) but here she's just pathetic.

Deadshot was the higher and lowest point of this episode. I liked his Zsasz attitude, but we got no explanations about him or the tatoos. And i'm hoping he's not really gone for good. I mean, Deadshot could be great recurring character for a show like "Arrow". They can't just have him killed him after 3 episodes.
