Are You Ready For A Hong Kong Phooey Movie?

Nothing from our childhood is safe these days.

No Caption Provided

We've been hearing more about the Smurfs movie lately.  Hollywood continues to show us that they have run out of new ideas.  Variety has reported that Alcon Entertainment is moving forward with its LIVE ACTION/ANIMATED version of Hong Kong Phooey.  Alex Zamm (Inspector Gadget 2) is directing a script written by David Goodman.  It gets better (or perhaps worse), it looks like Brett Ratner is also one of the producers.

Hong Kong Phooey was a classic Hanna-Barbera show that featured Penrod Pooch, a janitor in a police station that secretly fought crime as the masked hero.  Hong Kong Phooey bumbled through the cases often getting assistance (unaware) from Spot, the office cat.

I have to say that this pretty much bums me out.  There was something about Hong Kong Phooey that appealed to me as a child.  While the classic Hanna-Barbera cartoons were all great, Hong Kong Phooey was the only action figure I got when McFarlane Toys recently put out a couple lines of figures based on the classics.

But then again since Hong Kong Phooey is the "number one super guy," I shouldn't be surprised that a movie with him is being made.  Let's just hope they can get someone that could do the voice nearly as well as Scatman Crothers did.

My five year-old daughter recently caught a couple episodes on Cartoon Network's Boomerang channel and she liked it.  So this movie could work for the younger generation.  But then, she doesn't have the typical five year-old tastes since she watches a lot of the stuff I dig.  I just hope that when it comes out, it's not too painful.

I'm one of the few people people that actually liked the Rocky and Bullwinkle movie... but still, I don't have high hopes for this.

I loved Hong Kong Phooey as a cartoon--and it should stay as such--a cartoon.

I love that cartoon, ya can't go wrong with it - but a movie would be one of the worst ideas ever.

They always screw up making a cartoon into live-action. Underdog, Dragon Ball and I know they're gonna screw up with Astro Boy.

Underdog, Flintstones, Smurfs, and now Hong Kong Phooey?  Hollywood truly has no originality left and is only doing ye olde money grab.  Yet another dagger in the heart of my inner child as I loved Hong Kong Phooey.

The truth is, folks, this movie isn't being made for us old folks who remember the show. Similar to Clone Wars (the animated one which got a lot of hate), it's made for the new younger generation so they can get an idea of what it's about. I mean, I didn't know about Teen Titans at all until I saw the series on TV. Given that now I totally prefer the REAL comic books to the show, I still thank the show for introducing me to the characters and such. Truth is, I doubt the people in charge of this are thinking of how much the old folks are going to love it as much as how many little kids are going to drag their parents to go see this movie therefore making them some monies. Kids love stupid crap. That's just about it really.

I dont see how a movie will "ruin" the old cartoon.  An interview with Stephen King I read a long time ago put it into perspective. He was asked, "How do you feel about all these bad movies ruining your books?" He simply pointed to a shelf of his books and said, "They aren't ruined, pick one up and read it. Batman wasn't ruined by Batman and Robin, the old cartoon wont be ruined by a live action movie.

@Crazy Pan: thing is hong kong phooey and teen titans are not stupid so what are you talking about?

and yes G~man i like the idea as long as they don't screw it up

and yeah Engeline is write about that movies do not ruin the franchise its based on its just that people don't like movies that don't live up to the original story so they exaggerate....alot i mean a crap load of exaggeration with annoying fans saying "you killed batman" or some dumb crap like that
