Are Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver in 'The Avengers 2?'

The director drops a hint about a duo appearing in the sequel... and all signs point to Magneto's children.

Avengers 2 is still a decent amount of time away, but if given the chance to talk with Joss Whedon, one just can't resist asking about it. That's exactly what has been happening at all of the press events and premieres for Iron Man 3 (which is getting insanely good reviews, by the way), and it looks like Yahoo! Movies managed to land an interesting bit of info from the talented director. When asking about how things are going with the hugely anticipated follow-up, Whedon stated, "I've got these two characters, two of my favorite characters from the comic book... a brother/sister act. They're in the movie, that's exciting."

No Caption Provided

Now, unless another duo is eluding my memory, Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch seem like the most obvious pair. Since the team's franchise has been fairly inspired by Mark Millar's THE ULTIMATES (so far, at least), I can't help but wonder if the take on these characters will be inspired by that alternate universe, too. What'cha think, Viners? Speak your mind below.

UPDATE

It has been confirmed via Entertainment Weekly that the siblings are in The Avengers 2.

I'm a huge fan of the Young Avengers (I know, big surprise).

As a Marvel fan and fan of the MCU, I've always thought of the third Avengers movie ending in a way inspired by Avengers Disassembled to finish the trilogy. Of course, because Fox has the rights to the X-Men and Mutants, I always assumed we'd never see the Scarlet Witch (or Quicksilver) in an Avengers movie, so I guessed the whole "disassembled" concept would be caused by something else.

If the Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver are part of the Avengers movie franchise, that means this possibility might just become a lot more likely. Not only that, as a fan of the Young Avengers, this makes it that much more possible that the Marvel Studios could greenlit a Young Avengers movie starring teenage characters based on established Avengers:

Captain America - Patriot

Iron Man - Iron Lad

Thor/Scarlet Witch - Wiccan

Hulk - Hulkling

Hawkeye - Hawkeye II

Quicksilver - Speed

Ant-Man - Stature

etc.

Well considering both have had more face time in the Avengers than anything X-Men related, especially Wanda, I can see this working. It also allows for mutants to exist in the MCU thus paving the way for when Marvel gets X-Men back. Granted I kinda prefer them not being mixed in with the Avengers universe, but I can see the overall plan here. Establish mutants for inevitable X-Men reclaim

This could also be a good look at it.

I honestly couldn't care less if they didn't include anybody but who was in the first movie (with maybe a few personal cameos here and there, like people from Thor, Iron Man, and the like), but as long as they do it in an awesome way, I'm fine with whoever they throw in. I loved Wolverine's scene in X-men: First Class. Probably my favorite scene of the movie.

I don't think Whedon's comments are as transparent as this article suggests. I agree with those of you that a 'brother/sister act' doesn't necessarily mean actual siblings, as it could mean a male character and female character who develop a strong non-romantic bond. For that matter it could even be Hawkeye and Black Widow and not any new character. Furthermore, I agree with whoever said that these characters didn't have to be team members, but could be supporting characters or villains If we go this route but take that they are literally siblings, Andrea and Andreas von Strucker are possible. However, if we go for the broader not-necessarily-siblings view, virtually anyone is possible.

If we are to assume that the main villain will be Thanos, as teased at the end of the first movie, I think it might be somewhat safe to assume that his good brother Eros, who became the Avenger Starfox might be included in the film, (Though not that he is more deserving of being cinematically represented than Ms. Marvel, Vision, the Wasp, Black Panther, Wonder Man, etc.) Starfox has, according to his article on the Marvel website's wiki, had brother/sister type relationships with Monica Rambeau (who last I checked was going by the moniker 'Pulsar'.) as well as She-Hulk and Tigra.

Also, I disagree with those of you who claim the movieverse is more focused on the Ultimate U. What aside from the use of Ultimate Nick Fury, everything happening in the 21st century, and Hawkeye being a S.H.I.E.L.D. agent do you base these claims on. In the Ultimate U, the Natalia Romanova Black Widow turned out to be a deep cover spy for a coalition of foreign operatives who murdered Hawkeye's wife and three small children, kidnapped Clint himself, framed Captain America for the act, feigned being in love with Tony Stark, killed Edwin Jarvis ........ and ultimately ended up being killed by Hawkeye after all the other countries' agents and Loki were defeated. Now I don't see Marvel Studios going that route with their version of Black Widow

@tigerkaya: Hmm, interesting...but Loki didn't even really fight Iron Man in the first Avengers movie? He wasn't even really the main villain, it was that other weid alien race that I never heard of...they were pretty generic honestly. I'm just hoping the next movie will be more climatic with Thanos...though I'm still a bit perturbed that Thanos is the main villain since he was largely a Captain Marvel/Silver Surfer villain. If not the Kree/Skrull then how about, at least, Ultron or Baron Zemo or one of the dozens of other villains that were, at least initially, exclusive to The Avengers?

@docluthorvondoom: Seems I made an error. Marvel Studio's does own the Skrulls just not Super Skrull sadly due to ties to Fantastic Four. Reason why Whedon didn't use them was because he felt them and the Kree were just too big to fit into the Avengers movie with their history, shape changing and how it would conflict with the conflict between Loki vs Iron Man in science and technology. Perhaps will see those two race's in the Guardians of The Galaxy.

I doubt its those two. They just don't fit on this team on their lonesome. If they were going to do this, I would think they're moving towards that civil war storyline in which many X-Men characters are a big part of. They can't do that because fox still owns the main X-Men characters, so I believe that adding these two would just be silly. Maybe this is a brand new fresh story he created including these characters.

Avengers 3 has more chances of having newer members on the scene as compared to Avengers 2. I mean Avengers 2 most probably is going to have the same roster as the Avengers ( no doubt, we can have a cameo of the ant man) but if you look at the solo movies announced for phase 3, then it almost becomes certain that we are going to have The Black Panther, Dr. Strange, Antman and Wasp in the movie. If they decide to bring Avengers 4 they can include Daredevil, Ms. Marvel in it as well.

Phase 2:

  • Iron Man 3 , 2013
  • Thor 2, 2013
  • Captain America 2, 2014
  • Guardian of The Galaxy, 2014 [credit scene = Thanos heading to Earth, Avengers 2]

Avenger 2 (2015) :

  1. Featuring Guardian of The Galaxy, introduce Ms. Marvel and Vision
  2. Villain = Thanos (defected at the end), Loki
  3. Hulk out of controls after Thanos, Avengers captures Hulk
  4. End credit = illuminati stranded Hulk on Space, follow Planet Hulk event

Phase 3:

  • Ant-Man, 2015 (featuring Wasp, introduce Ultron) [credit scene = Wakanda]
  • Black Panther, 2016 [credit scene = Dr. Strange]
  • Dr. Strange, 2016 [credit scene = indicate Hulk return to avenge. ]

Avengers 3 (2017) :

  1. World War Hulk Storyline
  2. Featuring illuminati

Well this is good, and all. But how would they fit Thor into the story if he wasn't in the Comic version?

I don't think there is any problem. SInce the studio stated this is an Ultimate Universe, so that they can put in their own elements in it. Just like the TDK trilogy did, Nolan didn't based the whole movie on single storyline...instead, he mixed with different elements in it to make it much more convincing in a realistic world.

And I don't think they will have Sentry in the movie too... just replace him with Thor. That will work IMO.

I'm cool with Wanda and Pietro getting added to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Just as long as it's not the Ultimate versions.

Also I hope the non comic reading audience doesn't think MArvel is ripping off the Flash with Quicksilver. They both have speed powers yeah, but their powers work differently and are completely different characters.

I too would have like to see Ms. Marvel and Captain Marvel (Even if he is just Marh-Vell) added.

I truly have no clue. Whedon's not one to tip his hand - particularly if it's potentially legally contentious. He might be engaging in word play as it is. I'm sure there are characters - but he might be just using a euphemism.

I am baffled and amused that at least 5 people have stated that Marvel and Fox have dual rights to the characters, and one poster went as far as to actually include video evidence of Kevin Feige confirming this, but there are still people on the third page of comments claiming that Marvel can't use the characters. I won't claim that I read every prior post in a topic before commenting, but this is getting ridiculous.

There was actually an article that came out months ago about this. The way the rights work, Marvel Studios and Fox Pictures actually share dual rights. They can both use either of those characters in film.

However, Marvel studios can't say or allude at all to them being mutants.

Since when? I did not think they could use characters who were used in the films (Quicksilver had a brief cameo in Wolverine).

Since forever, apparently. Kevin Feige was interviewed about it around a year ago.

This is also why in The Avengers, the Chitauri are not called Skrulls. It's pretty much the same situation with that.

I obviously LOVE this idea, I LOVE Whedon, I LOVE the Scarlet Witch.

What I worry about is that Magneto's involvement in their lives is a huge component of their characters...I'm wondering how they'll pull this off.

I just saw Iron Man 3 on midnight Wednesday/Thursday.

I have adored every single Marvel Studios movie. 100%. I thought I.M. 3 was hot trash. A disgraceful movie. I recognise I seem to be in the minority but I just fail to see how anyone can overlook the tonal shifts and character butchering (That's not a spoiler). The "insanely good" reviews are baffling.

It has really made me wake up to the fact that there is no such thing as a sure thing. Knocked my assumptions regarding Marvel Studios down a few pegs.

I believe that Fox owns the rights to them by association. They are the children of Magneto, who belongs to Fox at the moment. Also, the fact that Quicksilver might have been in Origins: Wolverine would reinforce their claim. So until the rights go back to Marvel, I doubt it.

Mixed reaction. I love the two characters and they have a long standing with the Avengers team in the comics despite the House of M and Disassembled story arc that really did set well with fellow members and to say nothing of the readers. However I would rather see Pym and Wasp in the next film, they kinda shafted in my opinion for not being in the first despite founder status in the comics.

Not quite sure why people assume being potentially inspired by the Ultimates version means it has to include the physical element -- it could simply be them working under Nick Fury.

Awesome point! I don't think the siblings are so tied to Magneto that he has to even be mentioned and I can definitely see Sam Jackson (as Director Fury) being suggestive but not disclosing the past of his operatives. Likewise, Wanda and Pietro's powers would be awesomely demonstrated by the effects team as long as they stick to Wanda's original hex-manipulation and avoid all the HoM power amp of flight/reality manipulation/energy projection (she always sort of could do that but it got more focused with training with Agatha Harkness). If they were to appear in Avengers 2, it is doubtful that they would get full status attention and might just be used as a team-up. Either way, anticipate a complete lack of accent, like with Black Widow (abysmal!) and probably sleek uniforms vs the awesomely revealing scarlet one-piece we have all come to love from Wanda. I could see them using their birth names rather than their codenames, especially if Wanda in particular does have the associated uniform. Either way, the Avengers will need against the Mad Titan Thanos, who in canon has on numerous times pimp-slapped the Hulk away like a short-changing ho.

but its legally impossible

and if you had to choose another two avengers you'd go with Pym's

or if you can only choose one, you'd go with Captain Marvel because the movie avengers right now are far to male dominated,

It would be great if they were in the Avengers movie, but aren't they apart of the X-Men universe? And wouldn't they have to get the rights from Fox to borrow these characters, although they haven't shown up in the X-Men movies yet?
