Andy Diggle Exits ACTION COMICS, Tony Daniel Steps Up [Update]

AWhat will these changes mean for the future of the series?

Back at New York Comic Con, it was announced that Andy Diggle would be taking over ACTION COMICS after Grant Morrison with Tony Daniel doing the art. Earlier this month we saw a preview for their first issue, on sale April 3. Their start was pushed back a month when Morrison needed one more issue to finish his run. Now it turns out more changes are on the way.

Earlier today, Diggle stated on Twitter he was leaving the series "for professional reasons."

No Caption Provided

No explanation was given as to why or with which issue. What does this mean for the series?

Alex Segura, DC's Executive Director of Publicity tweeted that Tony Daniel will expand his role "and take over as writer and artist for the remainder of the arc."

We'll have to stay tuned to find out if Daniel continues writing after the arc or if another writer will be announced. Here's hoping everyone is happy.

UPDATE

Tony Daniel posted the following on his Facebook page:

"Yes, many have heard, Andy Diggle left Action Comics after the first issue. I can only say I feel bad he made that decision. I think it was the wrong one, but that was his choice to make. For the remainder of the arc I'll be working off his plots to finish out this first arc. So essentially, I become 'scripter' in the credits w/ Andy as 'plotter.' As for myself, I end my short run after I complete this first arc, which ends with issue 21. This was preplanned since last fall as there is another project I'll be taking on, and assisting with, a massive project with DC. I still think people will like this arc and I'm staying as true as I can be to Andy's plans for this story. In the end I hope he'll find it somewhat recognizable as something he took part in."

Damn, just when I was getting excited too. Daniel is a great artist but a pretty mediocre writer. Not to mention Diggle leaving so soon for such ill-defined reasons really just continues to paint an already rather poor picture for DC.

Action Comics really needed 'phenomenal' to keep it going when Morrison left. This...is not phenomenal.

Hard to get excited about new creative teams when this happens so frequently DC. On a second rate book maybe, but one of your marquee titles? Come on.

This is such bull, I was really excited for Action Comics, new writer and awesome art by Tony. I just don't want to see Tony to be writing, hes a good writer but still... He does better when drawing for a writer.

Wow...I can honestly say I didn't see this coming. Seriously...what is up with DC lately? I mean don't get me wrong, got nothing but praise for Tony Daniel, but I really was set on seeing how Diggle would handle this. Now we'll never know. :/ And now Daniel gives us this little update. I'm skeptical. "That was his decision to make"...well what I wanna know is what drove Diggle to make this decision at all? And this is happening on the wings of just finding out not long ago that FIalkov has backed away from Green Lantern and Red Lanterns. I'm actually starting to become concerned at what's going on at DC now. We the fans are definitely not getting the whole story here.

That's probably not going to be the most popular comment here lol. I'm also not the biggest Morrison fan, in fact I think the whole Superman corner of the DCU has been pretty awful since the new 52 kicked off so I just want someone new writing a Supes book that will hold me over until Superman Unchained and Superman/Batman drop

Daniel is amazing, but he can't keep up the steam with other projects and handling story/art duties. Just look at Detective. Started out amazing, then faded like a fart in the wind.

Trust me anything's better than Daniel writing. You'll regret those words once you see how poor a writer Daniel is. Diggle was the best bet to follow Morrison's tough act IMO and Daniels will not even begin to live up to Morrison's standards. This is a complete nightmare. Luckily Snyder's on Unchained so that's something. But Daniel and Lobdell on 2 Superman titles means that Superman's 75th anniversary will fall rather flat now.

It was good to have Grant Morrison's Action Comics and at least I can check out Superman/Batman but the Superman books are now so terrible. It just seems like DC has no idea how bad they look now.

Hmmm. Well, Daniel is a fantastic artist, and despite a sub-par run on TEC, I'm more than willing to give the guy another chance. He's not an awful writer and he's new to the writing game anyway. I expect him to only get better.

I think the fact that Daniel is the new writer just says to me that DC, once again, have no freaking idea of what they were suppose to do with this book once Diggle left and just call the first person available

I have plenty of experience reading Daniels' writing on Batman and Detective Comics. And though you don't like Morrison's writing on Action Comics from the sounds of it, Daniels is a whole lot worse in the writing department. A fantastic artist for sure but a sub par writer at best. Unchained is now the fortunate addition to the Superman family since this news leaves 2 not so good writers writing Superman.

This is so unfair!! :/

Why can't Andy Diggle finish at least one dang story arc?!?

Well, I liked Batman: Battle for the Cowl and I never read his New 52 Detective Comics but I heard it was terrible.

If this turns out bad, at least we'll have Superman Unchained and Superman/Batman books.

Well actually to be fair, I did love the Superman in jeans that it started out with, and yeah it defiantly got pretty weird. As for Lobdell I was looking forward to that, I do enjoy some of his stuff but I just haven't been digging his Superman (bar the art which has been amazing of course). I find he (Lobdell) is very wordy, he has a freaking amazing artist working with him on that book but there are some pages destroyed with unnecessary dialogue taking up all the real estate

This kind of bums me out. I've been trying very hard since the new 52 started to like Superman and this isn't helping. I've already dropped Superman (I love Rocafort's art but he is leaving with issue 20, and I find Scott's writing kine of meh). I was going to stick with action because of the Diggle/ Daniels team up. I dig Daniels (Batman R.I.P especially) art but not so much his writing.

I'm now thinking about dropping both and replacing them with Unchained and Superman/ Batman.

And I was really stoked for this. Sigh.

I despise Daniel as a writer; he is so awfully dull, so I think I'll just avoid this completely until a good writer is found.

Also, who gives up on writing Superman?!

Wow I guess Diggle did not like the vision DC has for Superman now, then again there showing they have no idea what to do with him. DC has fallen so much since the reboot now the company is a joke the editors have no idea what there doing. A new universe was put in the hands of a team that had Jim Lee on it remember Heroes Reborn? looks like we got the DC version of it.

There is no hope for Superman in the new 52 he has been placed firmly in a long period of mediocrity that DC has no problem with him being in.
