Amazon.com to Acquire Comixology

The king of online shopping is buying the king of digital comics

No Caption Provided

Amazon.com, the place where most folks shop online, announced that they will be acquiring Comixology in an agreement between the two companies. Full press release below from Comixology's tumblr page.

SEATTLE—April 10, 2014—(NASDAQ: AMZN)—Amazon.com today announced that it has reached an agreement to acquire comiXology, the company that revolutionized the digital comics reading experience with their immersive Guided View technology and makes discovering, buying, and reading comic books and graphic novels easier and more fun than ever before.

“ComiXology’s mission is to spread the love of comics and graphic novels in all forms,” said David Steinberger, co-founder and CEO of comiXology. “There is no better home for comiXology than Amazon to see this vision through. Working together, we look to accelerate a new age for comic books and graphic novels.”

“Amazon and comiXology share a passion for reinventing reading in a digital world,” said David Naggar, Amazon Vice President, Content Acquisition and Independent Publishing. “We’ve long admired the passion comiXology brings to changing the way we buy and read comics and graphic novels. We look forward to investing in the business, growing the team, and together, bringing comics and graphic novels to even more readers.”

Founded in 2007, comiXology offers a broad library of digital comic book content from over 75 of the top publishers as well as top independent creators. Following the acquisition, comiXology’s headquarters will remain in New York.

Terms of the acquisition were not disclosed. Subject to various closing conditions, the acquisition is expected to close in the second quarter of 2014.

There's lots of pros and cons to look at when it comes to news like this. It's easy to say that with Amazon's help, Comixology's reach and readership could skyrocket, seeing as Amazon.com has become the end-all, be-all of online shopping. What does that mean for folks who are already Comixology users though? Will prices change? Will the way the company works change? There's no way to know yet, so we'll keep an eye out for further information regarding this huge deal.

What do you think about this news? How will this change how we read digital comics?

In the Comixology statement it said that its identity wouldn't change, they are just going to be a subsidiary of Amazon so probably no real connection except maybe (I'm guessing) they might get a bigger budget (more licensing, more marketing, expansion into more countries, more tech development), all their comic "files" might move to Amazon cloud storage to be more "in the family" (that saves money for them) and probably some new employees and/or office space.

I LOVE ComiXology. I was skeptical about digital comics when I first started, but I really enjoy reading digital comics. I just wish the Marvel Comics app on Android was as good as the Android ComiXology app.

Do you have windows 8? or 8.1. I can only think that maybe if I upgrade my system to 8.1 the application can be updated. The thing that frustrates me is that I downloaded all my collection which took about 3 hours and I can't read any of them :/

The Comixology Windows 8 app is completely RUBBISH. You're better off reading it online.

I would love an offer like that ! Digital are so overpriced right now !

But we must not dream, people are still paying for comics that they can't even back up on a hard drive for the price of a real copy,

Yes, that's the one big disadvantage I don't like about digital comics and comixology either. The price of a digital comic should be less than of the print version.

Well, I know $4.99/month wouldn't be enough but I think these numbers just needed to be adjusted to make such offer a win/win situation for both sides. You have to keep in mind that the unlimited reading would be limited to one-time reading only. If you want to keep the comic permanently you'd have to pay more per comic and that price could depend on the length of the reader's subscription.

Dreaming should be allowed here. Like I said this could be win/win for all parties involved. Publishers must like the idea of having permanent readers and consistent profits.

I wonder if this could lead to being able to "rent" a comic, like have access to so many comics in a given month if you're a prime member or something like that.

I predict that we won't even notice the changes to Comixolgy if there are any. Similarly to Disney's acquisition of Marvel, or DC's evolution to DC Entertainment with installing Diane Nelson as president. I was afraid these events would drastically alter comics for the worse, but neither appeared to effect the flow of the comics either way. (The New 52 and Marvel NOW began several years later, and while they could have been set in motion by these changes to happen when they did, who's to say that they wouldn't have happened either way as the natural evolutions of the companies?)

Also, I know within the past six months, Comixology just started their feature where you can buy someone or redeem and E-gift card. With this news, I'm wondering if they'll get rid of that and you can just use your Amazon gift cards on Comixology. On one hand, any and all effort Comixology put into building that feature would have pretty much been wasted. However, it's always good when you can spend you Amazon gift cards on Comixology comics if that;s what you want. And I'm sure there would be other positives to that too. I wonder what they'll do about that.

I'm pretty happy about this. I think it will alleviate a lot of fears of losing comics if the company goes under. I have over 2k digital comics so I am pretty happy because i don't think Amazon is going anywhere for a long time. Good for the creators of Comixology as well. They will be getting a nice pay day for all their hard work.

Wow, big news. I would hope this just further smooths the long-run trend to smoothly read comics on any platform, and they don't focus on just the Kindle instead. But I think they're smart enough to keep it open.

@ccraft: Dude, I've got over 2000. Granted, a lot of which was free but there are HUNDREDS that I paid for. So I'm hoping they don't pull a New 52 on us and alienate people who've been using the service for years

I think this is fantastic! Both companies I love. I wonder if Amazon plans for fold Comixology into their own service, like Amazon comics, powered by comixology. Have one site for your ebooks and ecomics.

And guys come one, nothing is going to happen to your library. If anything this means that it's less likely that anything will happen to your library.

I'm a half n half reader. I usually read back issues and idies digitally and current stuff in print. I'm hoping this doesn't upset the delicate balance I've established in my comic book life but by God if something happens to my library....

I hope nothing happens to my library, I have like 435 issues/collected comics on there. But I doubt they would do that, it would hurt long time users who wouldn't return...

I hope only good comes of this, like someone mentioned above the two companies have similar working models so I cna't see Amazon making any drastic changes. I wouldn't be surprised to see Amazon simply link Comixology to their Kindle platform and leave them to run themselves, similar to the Disney/Marvel and Facebook/Instagram buyouts.

Hurm this'll be interestnig to see if it causes anysort of shake up in the digital marketplace. Marvel and DC already have their own thing going wouldn't be hard to imagine this putting them in over drive to make their digital offerings better Amazon is already the king of eBooks wouldn't be hard to see them exerting the same kind of pressure on pricing of single issue and trades which should be good for us.

This is great news. Even after all of these years and all of their success, Amazon is still very much a company that puts its costumers first. Amazon and Comixology have very similar business models, so I don't see this acquisition changing the standard practices of the Comixology. The only thing this changes as far as I'm concerned is that with a behemoth like Amazon backing it, there is now much less chance that the company will go out of business, removing the risk that our digital comics will one day be inaccessible.

Would be nice if the comics section of the Amazon Kindle store was just Comixology or synced to Comixology...super annoying when I had to install Comixology on my Kindle Fire as a separate app to read the comics I had on that service.

I like Amazon, I recently bought a Asus T100 for school, Amazon is so much better than Ebay imo, I just hope not much changes come from this. I am digital reader, so I hope this is good news. I have felt Comixology has lacked in few areas, such as technical problems like comics wouldn't load and what not.
