Amazing Spider-Man #612 Review, The Beginning Of The Gauntlet

G-Man looks at the beginning of bad times for Spidey.

Here we have another big story arc for Spider-Man.  If you're like me, you probably have a little dread over this.  I love the big epic stories but sometimes they just feel too forced.  I don't want the "hero" to have a bunch of crap thrown at him just to make a splashy story.  What will make this big arc different from the many that we've seen over the years?  Let's find out:

Since this is just the beginning, Spidey's still in one piece.  I do think the use of Electro is an interesting choice.  We've seen what he could do way back in New Avengers when Electro played a pivotal role in the break out at the Raft.  Electro is usually portrayed as a loser but he has the power and potential to be a major villain.  Sure he used to wear a funny suit but who hasn't?  We'll have to see what Mark Waid has in store of him and the others that will pop up.

Paul Azaceta's art gives the story a nice gritty feel.  Spider-Man has almost a retro feel to him even though he maintains his normal look.  Now apparently in issue #615, Javier Pulido will take over the pencils.  Let's hope for a smooth transition.

I remember when Electro was a bad-ass in the 90's Spiderman cartoon and he took down S.H.I.E.L.D. single-handedly, good times. He was also the son of the Red Skull, hahaha. Ahhh crazy cartoon character changes.

Sounds like the beginning of a cool story, I'll all for it.

The Electro symbolizing the conservative Tea Party and Dexter as Obama (Or is Spidey Obama?) was too much for me. Too blatant and a poorly handled political parallel.

Overall I liked this issue. I have a question about 611 though. What did Eddie Brock have to do with anything? Why was he featured in that issue? Someone please answer!! :D

Me & my dad had a good conversation this past week about how Electro or Kraven The Hunter should be the next villian for Spider-Man 4 because they only need 1 villian & Electro has a good story & could carry the movie but I hope Electro gives Spider-Man a run for his money in this book

I like the relationship that Peter had with Black Cat, but this current situation seems rather silly. Supposedly, she only wants the thrill of the Spider-man persona. Peter wants more then just that. The way he tries to make her jealous. It just of makes him seem like a hypocrite. They may be friend with benefits, but he doesn't seem to be willing to give up said benefits for this personal connection he seems to be trying to invoke.

If Peter is messing around with her wanting more that he knows she's not into. That just makes him look like a dog. If he had the courage of his convictions. He would cut off the physical stuff if she's not going to give him what he wants out of the relationship. It's basically Peter saying, "Sure, I want more out of this relationship, but I'm not willing to give up the "benefits" for it.".

I'd think differently if they were both in it for the physical contact. They would be on the same page.

Felicia has shown in the past that she could love Peter, but now she's not even interested in finding out about those lost memories they shared pre-MJ marriage. They were pretty serious lovers before that marriage. My memory is a bit vague from that far back, but wasn't it partly Felicia leaving that sent Peter to Mary Jane and led to the eventual marriage?

@Namor1987: I'd be shocked if Electro was the villain in the next movie...

after recently reading "the evil men do" again recently, i cant help but be bothered by the current spidey/cat situation. felicia goes on about how much shes grown, her still loving peter, how dumb she was for letting him go when she was younger, ect ect. i also recall her touching on these feelings in the first arc of mk spiderman too. then OMD happens and now she doesnt feel the same anymore? its hard to tell whats going on anymore since omd.

but her wanting a relationship with spiderman, nothing to do with peter, didnt this happen... uhh.. the first time they were a couple? and didnt they break up because of it? seriously they have a chance to do something with someone other than mj, which they went through alot of trouble to do, and theyre wasting it. it just seems like this is another psuedo relationship thats just on the way to him getting back with mj.

anyways the gauntlet, electro, its all good. and i also especially liked the retro feel to the art as well. i am excited for the gauntlet..but.. not every arc in asm has to have peter getting beaten to a bloody pulp. pardon me for assuming thats were this is headed.

i kinda hate black cat. shes just so corny. "im hot lets hook up." i dont think shes cool, kinda annoying actually. i thought this issue was cool but idk, well see what happens i guess.

and i really liked the art in the back up story. yea, it was really indie but for a back up story its tight

So peter parker has a problem with boning a beautiful woman and not dealing with any of her bullshit?

Political issue!!! Awesome, maybe it will be the beginning for a "mature" story arc (which I thought the ultimate universe was)

wow the sound seemed to drop about half way threw it had to crank up the ol volume to hear the last bit.the art for the second stroy with black cat reminds me of art from a jack an jill kids magizine.thats why its way way way off.

for a one page cartoon strip sure . for a back up story in a comic thats what over 3 bucks ... no.but thats my opion people forget art is about opion an is subjective to the veiwer.

electro kinda put me in mind of ps3 game infamous character a bit.

How I understand it.... Kraven's wife and daughter are collecting any Spider-Character... If you remeber Arana and the original Spider-Woman were both featured too.... In past issues, Kraven's wife went after Chameleon, and kidnapped Madame Web.... So I think this is suppost to build up to something even bigger!

I like how Mark Waid writes his stories and the artwork is nice. Let´s see how this is going...

mark waid said that he isnt giving electro his mask for the story, which really is a pitty.

@Violet-Eyed Dragon: It makes sense.  He's trying to rally the 'people' here in the first issue.  And as awesome as the mask is, it is a little cheesy.  I do agree it's unfortunate.  At least Electro will be stepping things up.

I didnt really like the art and Electro's costume i mean he shouldve had the mask with the costume or no mask and no costume

still the story was great (seeing electro taking advantage of the economic recession

Electro kinda looks like the guy from Infamous video game.

i still miss the costume  i really liked it, even if it was a little silly.
and black and grey just isnt the kind of colors someone with the powers of electricity should have.
