Ales Kot Off SUICIDE SQUAD

The writer announces he's off the title and who will take over.

DC's October solicitations came out the other day and quite a few people noticed Ales Kot's name wasn't attached to SUICIDE SQUAD #24. Instead, Matt Kindt's name was posted and Patrick Zircher was still on art. Today, Kot made a post informing fans that yes, he will no longer be writing the title.

"Dear readers —

Since the solicitations for October’s DC titles came out, I was repeatedly asked if I am no longer writing Suicide Squad. Yes, Matt Kindt is writing SS #24 and I am no longer writing Suicide Squad. Matt’s “3 Story" is one of my favorite graphic novels I read in the last few years and I look forward to reading “Mind MGMT" when I finally find the time to buy the first hardcover collection, which you can find here. Matt Kindt is a very capable storyteller who is doing exciting things in the comics medium and I wish him great things.

I killed my deadlines, I wrote my best, and I have no regrets whatsoever.

Thank you for the ride, for your support, for everything.

Have wonderful days and nights.

ZERO #1 is coming out 9/18 from Image Comics. Come with us."

No Caption Provided

It's certainly unfortunate to see Kot go. In my opinion, the man did a superb job with the varied cast and made the book dark yet exciting. That said, I'm excited to see what Matt Kindt will bring to the title and it's great to see the super talented Patrick Zircher will still be on the book. At any rate, don't forget Kot/Zircher's SUICIDE SQUAD #22 goes on sale tomorrow.

Gratz on keeping it professional until the comments, @k4tzm4n. =)

I heard bad things about this comic when it began, but good things lately. When did it turn around? When Kot got on it?

Well I don't know about you guys but I'm going with him. I hadn't been interested in Suicide Squad for a long time until Kot started to make it seem interesting but now he's gone I'll just get ZERO instead.

@k4tzm4n: Also what exactly "killed my deadlines" mean?

:D

And yes, he and Zircher jumped on the title with issue 20.

I means the opposite of the underlined -- he's saying he did a great job meeting deadlines.

Would have been better if DC had put Kindt on another book instead.

Exactly, you don't replace talent with talent, you replace hackery with talent and DC has more than enough hacks working for them that need to be replaced.

At first I saw this and was mad pissed off, but Kindt... Well he's a damn good writer.

Farewell Kot, your run could have been legendary. I hope Kindt can keep this series going

Geez, another sudden writer change at DC. What kind of chaos is happening in the editorial department?

That said, even though Kot COMPLETELY turned the series around, Kindt is a great writer and I have faith he'll do just as damn fine a job.

Welp.

I legitimately only picked up this book because of the new writer, and only considered staying on because I enjoyed his style. To hear a mere two issues into his run that he's gone again in two issues is patently absurd. If DC wanted to kill this book, they should have just done it.

And am I the only one who reads that departure note -- in which he says he was a fantastic employee and then says "hey guys, I'm off to Image" -- as a subtle way of indicating his departure was anything but amiable?

I like Mind MGMT and Revolver, but Kindt's DC work has been pretty mediocre. I actually preordered Zero because I enjoyed Kot's Suicide Squad so much. I'll still give Kindt an issue or two.

They should never hired him in the first place. He was the largest driving factor of that late 90's push that almost killed Marvel so I still am at a loss as to why anyone would hire him again. If it was up to me Harras,Didio and Lee would all be shown the door.

As for Kot, I thank him for his short run you wrote Harley fun and intelligent again something lacking in the new 52 as much as I try to be optimistic about DC I just can be anymore the negatives outweigh the positives and with villains month and forever evil its just sliding further.

Well, DC seems to take writers off books at the drop of a hat, there's no rhyme or reason I can find for their decisions. Sometimes I wonder if their board meetings simple consist of a dart board and a list of names.

Kindt has already shown by the number of crossover titles he is willing to write for DC, That his run will be nothing but editorial mandated story lines.I believe this all had to do with Forever Evil Kot wanted his series to be left alone so he could tell his story not a horrible pointless event tie in.

I know, right. After all the crap he pulled and shat all over the X-books in the 90s, you'd think whoever made the call to hire him would have known better. Even though Didio is not great either, he was still around for years and under him things were still relatively stable.

However, I'm with you. Fire Harras and Didio (so we could have a shot of getting Waid back at DC). But I would keep Lee on, just so he can at least still be an artist there.

This is very weird news, as it seems for once that the writer was actually fired rather than voluntarily quitting. So maybe possibly DC isn't to blame for this one? At the same time from what I've heard Kot's work on the series has been very well received and with all of the shake ups in creative teams DC already has, this doesn't seem like a smart decision at all to add any more inconsistency to the line up. With their history, it's really hard not to be on Kot's side in this.

Also, it's not really fair to judge a writer's full potential based on 4-page backup stories, but I think Kindt has been doing a terrible job with Martian Manhunter so far.

In my opinion and remember its just my opinion. I think Kot did not want to participate in Forever Evil he wanted his book left alone and when he did not bend over backwards to make the editors happy they fired him.

Something I could of seen happening to Gail Simone if she did not have such loyal fans. She wants nothing to do with many crossovers I mean look at the upcoming Batgirl year zero she is not even writing it. Yet Didio swore that all the year zero tie ins writers came to the editors asking to write them.
