A Buffy The Vampire Slayer Movie Without Whedon?

I have a feeling this could really upset people.

What are your thoughts on another "Buffy The Vampire Slayer" movie?  Could a movie be done without Joss Whedon?  According to The Hollywood Reporter, the idea of a movie is being tossed around.  So far Whedon is not involved.

How can this be?  Roy Lee and Doug Davison of Vertigo Entertainment plan on working with the director of the original movie, Fran Rubel Kuzui and her husband, Kaz Kuzui on a new movie.  Even though it was Whedon that first wrote the script, Kuzui and Kuzui Enterprises have kept the rights since Buffy started.

What would the movie deal with?  The good or bad news is that it would be a remake or relaunch and not a sequel or prequel.  There would be no connection to the TV series or any of the supporting characters.  The idea is to restart the story without overriding what has already been seen, similar to the new Star Trek movie.

Whedon's involvement has not been ruled out but he also has not been contacted.

Is this a good or bad idea?  Do we want or need a new Buffy movie/franchise?  Could it work without Whedon being involved?

The first movie was just O.K. for what it was, unique but not great.  Never understood the appeal of the T.V. series.

Nothing against the man, but I have yet to understand the mass swooning when Joss Whedon's name is mentioned.

This is just an attempt to milk a potential cash-cow.  Moo.

Correction:  It has upset people.  Even one of the shows writers, Tim Minear, who said it was "Unthinkable."

I've protested on Twitter.  I'm just passing around the #rebootbuffymoviefail sign around and have been sending it mainly to Whedonesque who are doing a similar thing.

I would love to see a Buffy The Vampire Slayer movie with Joss Whedon.

This movie would be a terrible failure even if Whedon was involved.

no they need whedon if not it will be stuipd and diffrent char that will not be good

There is no Buffy without Whedon.  The Kuzuis are the ones who screwed up the original movie from Joss's original idea.  They may hold the rights, but these days Buffy fans are Whedon fans.  You want to reboot because the tv series actors are too old?  Fine.  But you have to have Joss.  No Joss, no Buffy-philes  No Buffy-philes, how are you expecting to bring in enough non-fans if the fans are against it?

okay, IF there would be a new movie whedon would most defiantly need to be involved. I would be extremely pissed off if he wasn't. They said they wanted to bring on board the directors of the first movie.. First off, that movie sucked. It was horrible and was a complete failure in the franchise. Whedon was and will always be the reason why Buffy came to be. I could give a rats butt about the other directors. If they made a movie about Buffy which I'm not to sure is a great idea... Whedon and the producers of the show would have to lead it... there is no other way.

Without whedon the movie will fail...

I might even boycott it if he's not involved.  >: p

NO!  We need Whedon in this.  Seriously, it would not be the same.

UPDATE:

Whedon has spoken:
I hope it's cool.

I hope for world peace. Joss Whedon is so shallow.

Yeah, what's next? A Star Wars movie without Lucas? (actually, that might be good).

Besides, it's not like Whedon doesn't want to make a BtVS movie. He said, "nobody has ever broached the subject from the studio side".

I'm not holding my breath for a good movie here...

With the whole Twilight thing going on and given the the first Buffy movie of this production crew; there's a damn good chance they'll turn Buffy in the exact same necrophiliac as Joss did, not to mention make the vampires all tragic, and human / grey like, instead of the pure evil killing machines they're supposed to be that Buffy has to "slay".

In the end, Buffy just got away from the humans vs vampires / demons aspect and turned all vampires into Anne Rice weeping sad ass versions of themselves, Angel and Spike being prime examples here...

Vampires were supposed to be the ultimate killing machines, no remorse, no concience, just pure killing... so why the hell do 90% of the vampires in the Buffy universe want to end up sleeping with The Slayer.. you know, the thing they are supposed to fear above all else?

I haven't gotten into Buffy. Vampire overload.

@Methos:  well most of the vampires are just killing machines. but some of them are really lame ones... i mean. they're pretty crappy bad guys. you can kill them with a not very sharpened pencil.
it was only angel and spike who ever wanted to sleep with buffy. that being because they had souls. when angel loses his, he's a super-mega-evil bad guy. he tries to destroy the world.
the only real exception is spike who actually wants to sleep with buffy while he's evil. but spike is just weird.

@Methos: not sure which Buffy you where watching. as i recall Buffy slept with two vampires in all 7 years of her show. And there was one that she talked to for an episode before slaying. Every other vampire was evil to the bone and killed without mercy. Angel and Spike where prime examples? their the ONLY examples.
seriously, there where three good vampires, two good werewolves, and 3 good witches between Buffy and Angel's collective 12 seasons . Sure, there where more good demons, but almost every story/movie/tv show with demons in it acknowledges that not all of them are evil.
maybe your confusing "depth" with "bad". see, instead of creating a million vampires labeled Vamp #1 and so on, Joss went ahead and gave them personalities and back stories that made  them more character and less random face. he would give them names, tell you about the lives they had before they where vamps, and then let you know what theyve been up to for the past hundred years. If you actually payed attention to the show you where watcing, you would see that it was more about how being a vicious killing machine required you to be a bit of a thinker, with personality.
if anything, Buffy/Angel was saying that MOST of these creatures are evil, soulless killing machines, with only a few exceptions. 90% is a gross exageration. she slept with 2, and there where like 16 an episode...

First of all Buffy is my fav show of all time and Joss' tv version has made her the icon she is today so i feel a movie without him would be pure foolishness. People complain about some of the vampires saying their just supposed to be pure killing machines and nothing else but i think that would be wack. Not to mention the critics & fans would complain about the vamp characters being one-dimensional. Thats what makes Buffy special; you never really know where the characters are going to end up. Who'd of thought a VAMPIRE SLAYER would end up in love with a vampire. Did anyone expect Buffy's geeky/ackward best friend Willow to become this super-witch who'd end up going insane after her girlfriend was murdered and trying to destroy the world with black magic? No. And dont even get me started on Buffy's sister Dawn...

man you summed up buffy with joss perfectly, i salute you!

Looks like they're going ahead with this movie after all...

While I am upset, I also realize that new creative teams do take over characters all the time...as long as they do Buffy right, I have no problems with this project without Whedon.  I think I'm more devastated that the original cast wont be involved.
