10 Comics to Buy This Week: 6/20/2012

An unfunny comedian, a X-wedding, the Phoenix Corps and the return of Saaaaggaaaaaa.

Welcome back to 10 Comics to Buy This Week. As you're probably well aware, there are a metric crap-ton of comic books hitting shelves every single week. And for the common consumer, it's financially impossible to pick up everything. That's where this column steps in like your superhero savior, drawing your attention to 10 books worth your hard-earned dollars during any given week.

We not only going to spotlight tights and capes books, but also some indie titles off the beaten path, which, if all goes well, will broaden your reading horizons.

Astonishing X-Men #51

No Caption Provided

After all the hullabaloo surrounding Northstar’s proposal to Kyle Jinadu, it’s finally time to get to the actual wedding itself. However, before that can happen, Northstar is going to have to rescue his boyfriend, who was kidnapped at the conclusion of issue #50.

Marjorie Liu and artist Mike Perkins have their work cut out for them this issue. Not only do they have to show the X-Men find and rescue Kyle, but they also have to jam the actual wedding in there somewhere as well. It’s a lot to pack into a single issue, but we’re excited to see how it all goes down.

Avengers vs. X-Men #6

No Caption Provided

It’s the start of Act Two. After the twist in last month’s issue revealing the Phoenix Force wasn’t after Hope at all, but instead a bunch of extremist mutants who are now endowed with the power of a planet crusher, things have taken a grim turn for the Avengers. How can Iron Man, Captain America and even Thor hope to compete against such force? Pick up this issue written by Jonathan Hickman with art by Olivier Coipel to find out.

All hail Cy-wing!

Before Watchmen: Comedian #1

No Caption Provided

So far, we’re two for two with the Before Watchmen titles; Minutemen was incredible, and Silk Spectre provided a solid start. Now it’s time for the Comedian to step up to bat (get it?!).

Brian Azzarello and J.G. Jones kick off their series spotlighting the Comedian this week, and you can bet your bottom dollar it’s going to be dark and cynical. You know, perfectly Watchmen. Here’s hoping it has just as good of a start as the previous two series.

Daredevil #14

No Caption Provided

Daredevil has found himself between a rock and a hard place, that hard place being Latveria, the home of Doctor Doom. Mark Waid and artist Khoi Pham continue “Megacrime and Punishment” in one of the best series currently hitting shelves.

With Matt stuck in the house that Doom built, Foggy continues to dig deeper into Matt’s psychological fragile mindset. What he discovers will make him further realize Matt is far from fine. Those skeletons are still trying to claw their way out of Matt’s closet.

Grim Leaper #2

No Caption Provided

Lou has been struck with Cupid’s arrow. There’s only one problem: Lou has to find his true love’s next host body before he himself gets murdered in sure-to-be-gruesome fashion.

It’s a race against the clock for Lou as he sets out to track down Ella. However, there’s an evil force hiding behind the shadows trying to stop love at first sight from blossoming. By any means necessary.

Nightwing #10

No Caption Provided

It’s the start of a new arc in Kyle Higgins and Eddy Barrows’ Nightwing. Welcome to “The Republic of Tomorrow, Today.” While investigating a double murder in Old Gotham, Nightwing discovers a piece of his costume is being considered as evidence. Oh, snap! Nightwing #10 will also introduce a new villain – Paragon.

Judging by the book’s cover, things are going to go so well for Bruce’s oldest ward.

Punisher #12

No Caption Provided

Advertised as the perfect jumping-on point for new readers, Punisher #12 will present a Punisher world post “The Omega Effect” crossover. Frank catches up with Rachel Colve-Alves and things don’t go so well. Frank Castle might be a murderous vigilante, but he still has a code; a code that Rachel stabbed in the back. Now it’s time to get down to the bottom of why that was, Punisher style.

Saga #4

No Caption Provided

Brian K. Vaughan and Fiona Staples continue their sci-fi epic with a trip to Sextillion, the one place in the universe where a freelance bounty hunter can find love. Or, well, something that resembles it. (Lying)

Saga has been one of our favorite creator-owned series coming out, and there is a lot of competition to speak of, especially from Image. Vaughan and Staples are creating some truly remarkable characters amidst a universe where literally anything and everything is possible.

If you haven’t bought into the hype yet, stop being a total comics hipster and sip the Kool-Aid. It’s totally tasty.

Walking Dead #99

No Caption Provided

We’re so close to issue #100 we can taste it. For their 99 issue, Robert Kirkman and Charlie Adlard plan to hit us with the unexpected. But for a series like The Walking Dead, that’s exactly what we expect. Especially as we inch closer to the landmark 100 issue. Expect major plot developments -- and some deaths, probably -- in this week’s issue.

Wonder Woman #10

No Caption Provided

It’s a Brian Azzarello double feature this week. Azzarello is joined by artist Tony Akins for Wonder Woman #10, featuring Diana trapped in hell. After being shot through the heart, Diana is transported to the underworld, and it’s up to her half-brother, Lennox, to rescue her.

If you haven’t been reading Azzarello’s take on the Wonder Woman mythos, you’ve made a huge mistake. Get caught up and pick up issue #10 this Wednesday.

From this list, Daredevil and Astonishing.

@Necrotic_Lycanthrope: I was somewhat disappointed by the first issue of that arc personally, although there's still plenty of time for it to redeem itself.

@jinxuandi:

I'll admit it was a bit tricky to wrap around, but part of it because Eaglesham treated Rulk like a regular Hulk (even he himself admitted he goofed on a few panels when he was interviewed for Hulk Week on Marvel.com), but one thing Jeff Parker proves is that a combined arc from him kicks major booty, even if single issues are sometimes strange.

I personally can't wait for the issue where Rulk takes on Quetzalcoatl (Mayan/Aztec serpent God).

From the list Grim Leaper & Wonder Woman. Never would expect that I would be interesting in this two types of comics or stories, but I am very much enjoying both of them.

I was thinking about picking up the Before Watchmen: Comedian. How important is it for me to read the rest of the Before Watchmen or could I just read this series?

Not on the list Green Lantern Corps.

The Before Watchmen series are not together. You can read 1, 2, 3, none, it makes no difference.

Not to Whine like a fanboy, but since the Venom book started the Savage Six arc comicvine hasn't included none of it's issues in their 10 comics to buy this week, I hope they at least get to review it cause the Savage Six arc has been really Awesome. Sorry if anyone got bugged out by my rant.

Added Wonder Woman to my already abundant list - definitely looks worth taking a second look.

Picked up the first issue and didn't think much about it - perhaps I gave up too soon?

Most of these books are already on my pull list - never been a Punisher fan - lost interest in Nightwing (Red Hood is better as well as most of the other BAT Books) - Grim Leaper picked up the first issue and ...eh....

Saga, Daredevil, Wonder Woman are on my list, plus X-factor for good measure.

I hate how every time I see a comics to buy list on any website, it always includes an AvX issue, as if it hasn't been critically trashed by all the same people/websites now recommending it. Take it off the list for something better, no one wants to see it there.

Uh..none of these are really that far off the beaten path...Saga and Grim Leaper are, I suppose, but considering how well received they've been its not like they are unknown to plenty of people.

Sorry, I suppose I might be acting too strict and unnecessarily complicated about it...

f*ck all you guys hating on AvX. And that write up on AvX was completely wrong. First of all, they aren't mutant "extremists". That was Magneto a long time ago. Second, the phoenix didn't chose them, it's power ended up splitting into 5 after Iron Man used his new suit on it. It was meant for Hope, but it didn't work out that way. Oh, and I can't believe that stupid Astonishing X-Men wedding didn't happen yet. I've read the first 2 issues of Astonishing, and all they could focus on was that gay couple. Who reads comic books for that sh*t? Why would anyone want to pay $5 for a wedding comic book? Find something else to right about Majorie Liu. Damn.

I recommend everyone get into "Saga." It merges the best qualities of a Vertigo book with "The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy." And don't wait for the trade either. Brian K. Vaughan is running a hilarious five-page letter column in the individual issues, reminding me how much those are missed. Put on your ironic scarf, and drink the Kool-Aid with the rest of us.

Also picking up Wonder Woman 10, the last couple of issues took an odd turn but in the parlance of our times, it mitebcool.

this is why the event is bad.

Take note of the phrase "phoenix-killer armor."

The last time I check, if you had the power of the phoenix, you are pretty much all-powerful. It would be like having Jesus on your basketball team. wtf phoenix killing armor?omg that is so funny.

Meant no disrespect to the story or X-Men when writing the blurb. I always write with a bit of snark and/or sarcasm. It's just who I am as a writer. It makes things more interesting imo, even at the cost of using more words that maybe blow things out of proportion from time to time.

whoa Venom isnt on this list? the savage six arc has been good for the past two issue(including the prologue)

But yaa my list is:

Venom #19- already mentioned above.

Green lantern corps #10- so the trial of john didnt go so well, im curious to see how guy and the others will react.

Uncanny Xmen #14- i really dont care for the AvX arc but the Tie-ins havnt been too bad. and sinister is on the cover of the next issue so this is a MUST pick up for me

Nightwing #10- who is the republic of tommorow? ill soon find out. im sure alot of people are on the nightwing bandwagon after night of the owls and they were right to do so, but people should still be on this series because it has been great from the start.

Daredevil#14- last issue was kinda unexpected, im still curious to know what nelson found in murdocks desk.

Punisher #12- im new to this series i started reading because of "the omega effect" arc. so dont know too much but its been Ok so far. maybe might drop this series..idk yet.

WinterSoldier #7- i really like the way this series is written. i think what i like best is it doesnt really have that Marvel feel. this is what Brubaker is good at and i hope he doesnt leave this series. so this next issue will being the next arc about the third sleeper agent. look forward to more bucky action :)

I'll passon just about anything Marvel these days especially if it begins with an X , I mean seriously a gay wedding ?! Why are gay relationships and female characters being rammed down our throats? Keep the PC/We our the world agenda out of books long enough to tell a great story. On another note I do want to see how the Wonder Woman story pans out
