10 Comics to Buy This Week: 5/30/2012

Recommendations for this week's books? Yup, we've got 'em!

Welcome back to 10 Comics to Buy This Week. As you're probably well aware, there are a metric crap-ton of comic books hitting shelves every single week. And for the common consumer, it's financially impossible to pick up everything. That's where this column steps in like your superhero savior, drawing your attention to 10 books worth your hard-earned dollars during any given week.

We not only going to spotlight tights and capes books, but also some indie titles off the beaten path, which, if all goes well, will broaden your reading horizons.

American Vampire #27

The concluding chapter of “The Nocturnes” is here. Calvin Poole has found himself in quite the pickle, stuck between a town that hates him and a new, vicious species of blood sucker. It’s going to be interesting to see how Poole evades death in this issue – if he manages to accomplish that in the first place. American Vampire #27 also features the return of a major character.

America’s Got Powers #2

The first issue of America’s Got Powers definitely surprised us; not only was the book well written by Jonathan Ross and expertly drawn by Bryan Hitch, but the story took a turn we didn’t expect. That’s why we’re excited to crack into the book’s second issue this week. Will Tommy Watt’s dreams of being a super-powered celebrity come true? Or will the world’s most famous reality show be cancelled before Tommy has a chance to make his mark?

Animal Man Annual #1

Jeff Lemire is joined by artist Timothy Green for a special one-shot, detailing the history of The Red, The Green and The Rot. This issue ties into both Lemire’s ongoing Animal Saga, as well as Scott Snyder’s Swamp Thing series. Fans of either/both series should not miss this issue.

Batman Annual #1

The second major annual coming out this week centers on Batman and ties into the current “Night of the Owls” event. Written by Scott Snyder and drawn by Jason Fabok, Batman Annual #1 introduces Mister Freeze into the New 52 DCU. What role does he have to play in the Night of the Owls crossover? Tune in to this special issue to find out!

Batman: Death by Design HC

Writer Chip Kidd and artist Dave Taylor bring you this breathtakingly beautiful Batman story that merges the world of the Dark Knight with classic Hollywood cinema. Death by Design has been three years in the making, so it’s exciting to finally be able to get our hands on the book this week. Here’s hoping all the time spent making it has been worthwhile.

FF #18

The Future Foundation takes their first field trip – to the Negative Zone. What will happen when the group brings Annihilus home? This issue will also feature the return of Future Franklin and Val. Oh, and bugs. Lots, and lots of bugs.

Grim Leaper #1

Here’s another new ongoing series coming from Image. Grim Leaper is written by Kurtis Wiebe (Peter Panzerfaust) and drawn by Aluisio Santos, telling the story of Lou Collins, a man caught in a cyclical curse of gruesome deaths, who meets a girl named Ella suffering the same fate. As Image puts it, Grim Leaper is a love story to die for. How cute.

Additionally, every issue of Grim Leaper comes with a back-up story playing off the theme of “love at first sight.” The first back-up is actually written by IGN’s comic editor and our good friend, Joey Esposito.

New Deadwardians #3

The best book to come out of Vertigo’s newest wave of original series, New Deadwardians continues with its third issue this week. Inspector Suttle continues his investigation into the murder of a vampire by visiting Zone-B, the last refuge of the living.

If the cover is any indication, Suttle is in quite the pounding…

Peter Panzerfaust #4

It’s a Wiebe party this week! The fourth issue of Peter Panzerfaust hits stands, as Peter and the boys continue their journey to Paris. However, the group will come face to face with their great obstacle yet. If you haven’t bought into it already, Peter Panzerfaust is an imaginative take on the Peter Pan mythos you fondly remember, only with a Nazi twist. Meaning: it’s definitely worth checking out!

Ultimate Comics Ultimates #11

The torch passing begins with Ultimates #11. Writer Jonathan Hickman is joined by up-and-coming writer Sam Humphries, and artist Luke Ross to begin a new era for the Ultimates following “the People vs. the Children.”

Ultimates has been a pretty solid book these last few months, so if you looking for a book to jump aboard at the start of something new, this is it. It always feels good to be on the ground floor of something, right?

It's Snyder week!

Posted by Pbott

All great picks, and I agree that the New Deadwardians is the best new Vertigo book. Its a shame that it is not an ongoing.

Posted by Nefilim927

C'mon get some The Walking Dead #98 love in there!

Posted by zexion_armando

Batman Annual for sure.

And is America's Got Powers really good? lol I need something new to wrong

Edited by OptimusCline

Really hoping Ultimates doesn't start sucking. I always get nervous when writers change like that.

Looking forward to the annuals

Posted by The Stegman

Batman and Animal Man annuals out of this list, but a bunch of others unlisted.

Posted by longbowhunter

Animal Man and Batman Annuals. I'd like to get Death By Design too.

Posted by -The Renegade-

The ultimates has been really good, but I'm not sure it's the best way to start the series. There's too much going on, people will get confused.

I read America's got Powers #2 and I have to say it is worth the buy

Posted by blindisaac

Batman, Animal Man, American Vampire, and America's Got Powers for me. I might pick up Death By Design alter on down the road. Im getting ready to start buying Morrison's run before I buy any other Batman graphic novels.

Posted by Cyborg6971

Bman annual for me. And the others I have yet to pick up on my pull, like nightwing #9 batman and robin #9 allstar western #9. I wish I didn't have to drive an hour one way to my nearest comic shop. BOO.

Dem Image titles. Dem DC annuals

Sucks to be a Marvel fan these days when it comes to actual comic books I guess.

Posted by aidanphantom

No love for Doctor Who/Star Trek: TNG? :(

Posted by ThexX

The Ultimates all the way. People really need to check this book out. It has been second only to Uncanny X-Force in my opinion. I will also be getting Batman Annual.

Posted by Mandrewgora

Animal Man and Batman Annuals, fer sure.

Posted by fabo_puertorican

@ThexX: Agreed. Ultimates is a really great series, but people have not given it the shot it deserves. Only problem right now is that it's changing writers... let's see how that goes.

Posted by ssj2DeadPool

has there ever been a good annual?

Posted by primepower53

Looking forward to The Ultimates.

@Cyborg6971: where do u live?

Posted by Twentyfive

Going to buy Animal Man, FF and finally catch up on some issues I previously missed.

Thief River Falls MN. So far in the middle of no where the theory of evolution just reached us five years ago. It was quite a shook to the bible beaters.

Posted by nicholai441

2. Star Trek The Next Generation Doctor Who Assimilation2 1

Yep. Only Marvel book I'm currently getting is Amazing Spider-Man, and I may look into fantastic Four or Daredevil.

Totally looking forward to Batman annual. That's pretty much it this week except for maybe Ravagers.

Hmmm. I have played around with the idea of reading this series. Perhaps I'll check it out.

None of these except for Batman Annual were on my radar. This may have to be rectified.

Posted by StarKiller809

I'm only getting the Animal Man Annual as well as the Batman Annual.

I love America Vampire but I've been reading them in trades so I won't be getting it but I wish I was if I had more money.

Posted by flip_nosis

Batman and Spider-Man annuals. America's Got Powers, New Deadwaurdians, and TMNT.

Posted by Loki2u

Its easy to pick a top ten list when there's only about 10 comics coming out this week anyways. LOL

Batman Annual ftw.

Incredible Hulk #8 could be on this list.

Posted by jrock85

Animal Man and Batman for me.

Posted by Deadcool

Animal Man, Batman and FF

In one week, I love this week...

Posted by htb106

And The Ravagers #1. Batman annual should be good!

Posted by RedheadedAtrocitus

Crap, another week where none of the ones listed above are in my hold list :( I'm starting to sense a very limited pattern here...

Posted by ArtisticNeedham

I checked,, and DC, and none of the comics are the same. One website (Diamond or DC) mentions Earth 2 and Action Comics and the other doesn't. So I am unsure what issues come out Wednesday,

Posted by revbucky

This would not be my top ten for the week, although I will get the Batman annual.

Posted by deadpool25mm

Batman Annual and America’s Got Powers for me.

Posted by Novemberx2

@OptimusCline: im with you on this one, I have hope but im worried, especially because its suddenly going to some cross over story soon. I remember last time The Ultimate Marvel Editors gave a new writer an event... Ultimatum urgh Jeph Loeb you useless man

Posted by Green ankh

Peter Panzerfaust #4 is a must !! its too bad this isnt a ongoing

Posted by kennybaese

I think I'll probably end up picking up Death by Design. Since I'm reading Batman in trade, I'll probably hold off on the Batman Annual, but the Animal Man Annual should be showing up in my pull.

Posted by Jodez

Why does the Batman anuall say it introduces MR Freeze to DCnU, he was already introduced in Red Hood and the outlaws...

That I did not know (I'm not reading Red Hood). I was under the impression the Bats annual would be his first appearance. Whoops.

Posted by HempKnight757

@ArtisticNeedham: Action Comics & Earth 2 (I read both) come out next week. I can't wait! Along with those titles Batwing, Dial H, & JLI. The first of the month is always the best Wednesday for myself.

Posted by aztek_the_lost

New Deadwardians better then Fairest? I beg to differ!

Posted by CaptainMarvell

Issue 11 probably isn't the best jumping on point as there is a TON of stuff that has happened already, but it sure it good to see Ultimates finally get mentioned as one of the top 10 comics to buy for the week. Also Humphries helped write #10 too. I'm not too worried about changing the writer. I love Hickman, but its the concept that keeps me buying it. Ultimates is an Avengers story where anything can and does happen and as long as that remains and the focus remains on the core group, it'll be good.

Posted by theconman1876

Do you guys think the Spider-Man annual will be worth it?

Posted by yo_yo_fun

Must get Batman Annual! :)
