Artemis is a former member of the Bana Mighdall Amazon tribe that split from the Themyscrian tribe. These Amazons under the leadership of Antiope (Hippolyta's sister)eventually settled in Egypt. The Bana Mighdall Amazons renounced the Olympian gods and worshipped Isis, Mammitu, Bast, Neith and Ishtar. These goddesses blessed the Amazons with a perpetual sandstorm around their city to protect them from outsiders. The Amazons however would trade weapons and their skills for male slaves to increase their population. Artemis was the result of one of these liaisons

Artemis encountered Wonder Woman when she journeyed to Bana Mighdall looking for the Cheetah who had stolen her lasso of truth. Wonder Woman was defeated by the Amazons chief warrior the Shim'tar. The god Hermes was love with Diana and destroyed Bana Mighdall to get back at the Amazons of Bana Mighdall. The Amazons of Bana Mighdall were all homeless including Artemis. The Amazons entered into an alliance with Circe who told them that she would create a new home for them if they served her during the War of the Gods. They decided to take Themyscira as Wonder Woman was the cause of the loss of their original home. Artemis stood in front of the council at only 14 years of age and protested the action. As she believed Amazons shouldn't fight Amazons.

During the attack on Themyscira Circe betrayed the Amazons of Bana Mighdall and tried to destroy both tribes by transporting Themyscira into a demon dimension. Both tribes had to fight along side each other to survive. Wonder Woman eventually forced Circe to return the Theymscira back to the real world but time had passed differently in the demon dimension and Artemis was now a woman in her mid twenties.

Hippolyta began to see visions of her daughter Wonder Woman dying to prevent this he held another contest of the Amazons to choose a new Wonder Woman. Artemis fought Wonder Woman and eventually defeated her through some mystical assistance by Hippolyta. Artemis was crowned the new Wonder Woman. She was give the Gauntlet of Atlas, The Sandals of Hermes and the golden Lasso of Truth to replicate Diana's(Wonder Woman)powers. Artemis's time as Wonder Woman wasn't that productive. The superhero community refused to accept her and she was eventually killed by the White Magician.

When Artemis died she ended up in Tartarus and one of Thirteen ruling princes of Hell Dalkriig-Hath took her as his bride. Artemis eventually killed Dalkriig Hath and escaped back to the living world. She joined the short lived team called the Hellenders using the knowledge she gained in Tartarus to hunt demons. She began a brief relationship with one of the Hellenders called Sure-Shot but dumped him after finding out her was a drug addict.

Artemis has also trained several heroes such as Cassandra Sandsmark, Kara Zor-El and Sojourner. Artemis was informed of unrest in Hell after her murder of her husband. As his wife Artemis was next in line to rule his section of Hell. Artemis presented herself in front of the twelve surviving Demon Princes and accepted her husband section of Hell. To officially grant her control of Hell she had to be blessed by the twelve demon prince's. After the blessing it was revealed Artemis had pulled a switch and her friend the demon Belyllioth had assumed her form. The twelve demon princes vowed revenge on Artemis upon her return to Tartarus but Belyllioth(now officially one of the Thirteen rulers of Hell) has promised to protect her for eternity.

Some time later Artemis returned to Themyscira during a time of great unrest. Magala an Amazon sorceress incited war between the Themysciran Amazons and the Bana Mighdall Amazons. Artemis was crowned Shim Tar of the Bana Mighdall tribe. Artemis hoped to end the battle and open negotiations but ended up battling Queen Hippolyta. During the battle Artemis reminded Hippolyta that the reason she was the new Wonder Woman was because her actions had led to the death of her daughter Diana and Artemis herself. Shocked into her senses Hippolyta renounced her crown as did her daughter Diana and Artemis and Themyscirian General Phillipus were elected Co-Rulers of the Amazons.

During the OMAC attack on Themyscira during Infinite Crisis it was decided by Artemis and Phillipus that to save the Amazons they needed to teleport the entire island and all the Amazons to a new hidden location.

The Amazons have now resurfaced under the leadership of Hippolyta who has declared war on the world. Artemis does not seem to be in favour of this.She was last seen on the great wall in travelling clothes with no memories of her Amazonian life.
