Ares is the son of Zeus and the Olympian God of War. After years of fighting against The Avengers, Thor and mostly his own brother Hercules, Ares joined the ranks of the Avengers. He was a member of Tony Stark's official Avengers team and later Norman Osborn's Avengers.
According to the Mighty Avengers Most Wanted Files that was released quite recently it says "as an immortal Olympian God, Ares possess vast strength (lifting up to 70 tons) and endurance"
He was originally stated to be able to lift 70 tonnes, which made him stronger that any Greek god except Herc and Zeus and equal in strength to Pluto and Neptune.
This meant that we weaker than the Thing, Thor etc etc.

I think that you might be mistaken.
Yes he has vast superhuman strength, has virtually unlimited endurance as his body produces no fatigue poisons, has a pretty good healing factor (not quite as quick as Wolverines) and very experienced hand to hand and weapons combatant.
Wonderman is stronger, much harder to hurt but can grow fatigued (could fight for days if required). He can fly and has reasonable hand to hand experience.
Can Ares beat him - quite likely and it is a fight that I would pay to see.
Ironman is stronger, harder to hurt but again will grow fatigued. You know the asortment and range of his powers - he's a one man weapons platform. His skill with these weapons is impressive.
Can Areas beat him - more difficult to call this one - but I would say it was 50/50.
Sentry is far stronger than Ares, much much harder to hurt and has an endurance level as close to Ares you can get this side of a 'god'. His enegy projection powers are so intense (heat/light at least + maybe others) that he could incinerate potentially even someone as durable as Ares. His hand to hand skills could do with improving but his reaction time is meant to be even faster than Ares, so he should be able to get the drop on him.

I think he meant the coolest, not litereally the strongest or toughest
I always thought it to be set at 75 tons. I'll have to go through and check though as I'm not 100% sure. I do know it's around that level though.

Lifting has little to do with punching power otherwise Flash would still be ranked at zero
Anyhow back to why the lifting ranking system is trash Ironman lifted a 6,285 tonne Reactor, Namor lifted a WW2 Battleship 1 ,850-tonnes and a fully loaded tanker 62,000 tonnes , Hulk lifted an entire mountain, and guys like Drax rip stars apart

thats skill not strength huge difference but Ares should get a strength increase to around 90 tons so hes got a good strength limit with his great experience he'd be taken more serious since he mainly shows his durability over everything else besides in his minis ..
