The final resting place of jokes at Aquaman's expense

Posted by RazzaTazz (9450 posts) - - Show Bio

I guess by this point I have read what I will read of DC's new 52.  In what was a surprise to me my favourite issue of the month was Aquaman (and there are spoilers ahead ).  Aquaman was well written and paid a lot of homage to the past of the character in ways which I felt were funny.

Later the concept of making fun of Aquaman is addressed even more directly:
Which refers to videos such as these (there are three links there to videos).  The problem with parodies of Aquaman is that they have never been particularly funny in my opinion or particularly accurate.  The character has never been a personal favourite but I have never really held anything against him either.  In fact I think I laughed more at this issue making fun of the attempts to make fun of him than in the attempts themselves.  Of course the mocking of the character will continue in mainstream media because it is an already estblished running gag, but among comic fans that should know better its maybe time to put the past behind and pick up this month's issue to see the interesting place the new version is heading.

Awwh yeah, this is a nice blog. I like Aquaman, some really great story arcs in the past, but I usually like all sea characters. I hope this could be the start of a change that maybe might even permeate into the mainstream media if done right. A few years ago Marvel Thor wasn't half as known or popular as he is today, and it basically took just a really good run to trigger a few bigger changes. If this issue is written to such a likewise high quality...

Here here for Arthur. Can't wait to read issue now.

"i lol'd for like five minutes when the cop asked him if he needed a drink of water"

but anyway, like you said, people like to make fun of him, but most of the time the jokes are highly inaccurate, people do it with superman too calling him "a boyscout with his underwear on the outside who gets beat by little rocks" really they just take parts of character out of context. sadly like Chuck Norris, people take Aquaman's jokes seriously and it shapes their perception of him, making only...more jokes

I thought parodies were hilarious. I think him addressing it made this so awesome.  He's the total underdog here. Here's what made him bad ass, the tip he left in the diner after the rude reporter. Difference between a hero and a gloryhog was shown here, and Arthur came out a hero.

Agreed!

Besides the jokes, I also thought the action was great, and the flashbacks of his dad were sweet.

Didn't pick this up, I was afraid the entire chapter going to be:

"AQUAMAN SURE SUCKS"

*Aquaman flips a truck over with his bare hands* *Aquaman stoic face*

"GEE GOLLY I GUESS I WAS WRONG ABOUT AQUAMAN"

I'm not convinced that this assumption is wrong, though I'll admit I like that first image, where he's looking at the reader.

Don't worry the bold never happens.

Truly even I have made the jokes before and made the youtube videos clear to others in posts I have made. In truth I think its fun, and as it is sometimes said, often lies and exaggerations help convey a larger truth. And I think in this case the truth is that Arthur Curry had increasingly become a less and less tolerable character to both superheroes, supervillains, and readers alike. I remember some references to JLA in the 1990s and other works where even his fellow Justice Leaguers could barely tolerate him. At any rate I think that's where the Aquaman disrespect on the web and other places emanated. For Family Guy specifically though I think it is because he was one of show creator Seth MacFarlane's favorite characters growing up.

The delicious irony of it all is that Geoff Johns is the one who took away all the badass credibility the character had earned during the 90s.

It was a good issue, I just see him as the same as every other dark and brooding character now. I like the Batman: The Brave and the Bold Aquaman. They should put out a monthly title for him as well.

edit: and he could be played in the style of brian blessed.

I was one of the people who laughed at Aquaman because he was the guy that could talk to fish. But after reading this issue, I have to keep reading because it was brilliant. Looking forward to #2 now.

If you can get your hands on one of the 2nd printings, buy it. As I said, I was one of Aquaman's critics but this turned me around on the character. I only hope they can keep up the great writing as the series progresses.

@spiderbat87: Because Namor is a magnificently unrepentant bastard who would punch a hole through the heads of critics and sleep with their wives.

Call me a sucker but I just felt really bad for Aquaman. That guy at the diner was a huge jerk.
