Is aquaman worth reading and if so what is a good jumping on point? I don't want to spend a fortune in back issues or trades either.

Yup, like my man Raw said, it's a good jumping-on point for new readers, straightforward yet exciting story with gorgeous art. I recommend you pickup the first three trades or so, they're not that pricey.

I don't think the price of three trades could be considered a fortune

Like what Veshark said. I really enjoyed 'The Others' (TPB Vol. 2), but the other two including 'Throne of Altantis' (TPB Vol. 3) are very important to the continuity of the New 52 series.

I just want to say that I just picked up Vol. 1 of the New 52 Aquaman (yeah, I know I'm really late to the game). It's a perfect jumping on point since it reviews all the important bits. Plus, you get to read about his wife and her own history. I've liked Aquaman before the whole New 52 hype, but I never actually felt compelled to read it since I had other books I prioritized. I figured that if I kinda liked Aquaman before the change, then odds are I'll still like him the same way after the change. I was wrong. New 52 Aquaman is a fantastic read and if you want to jump into this character's story, then definitely start with the very first issue from the New 52.
