    Everyone Should Be Reading This

    The Story:

Aquaman fights creatures from the Trench. Afterwards he takes the body of one of the creatures to an old acquaintance of his to gain more knowledge on this species.

    My Thoughts:

Aquaman has been one of my favorite series coming out of the new 52. I might rank it second to only Batman in all honesty. I've been loving what Geoff Johns has been doing and just the whole vibe he's bringing each issue. Hopefully more people will begin to give Aquaman the respect he deserves. He has been an underrated and misunderstood character for some time now but hopefully that will all change soon.

We get a closer look at these creatures from the Trench this issue and learn a little more about them. A pretty cool fight between them, Aquaman and Mera takes pace and Johns makes great use of Mera's abilities again. The cops are still rude and obnoxious towards Aquaman who does his best to stay humble and calm. I also enjoy how Johns has intertwined flashbacks of Aquaman's childhood into the series. He's really doing a great job giving readers insight to Aquaman's character.

One key moment that stood out to me was the statement this Mr. Shin made. He stated "You still keep that trident. Despite all the trouble it might bring. He's going to come looking for it." Looks like Johns is stirring up a little mystery here. I can't even begin to make an assumption of who Mr. Shin is referring to but I'm certainly curious to find out.

Ivan Reis has been delivering stellar work each issue. He's one of my favorite artists. I've loved his style since the first time I laid eyes on some of his work. There's so many breathtaking panels he's created within not only this issue, but this entire series thus far. A prime example would be the opening page that had a sort of painted effect to it. I loved the splash page of Aquaman and Mera swimming together as well and of course the fight scenes were well scripted.

Aquaman is a series you should definitely be reading right now. It's worth following every month and while I may admit the pacing so far has been a little slow, I believe it's intentional. I have no doubt things are going to get very interesting in the next few issues which you surely won't want to miss out on.

    Rating: 5/5

Coming out of the gate in the new 52, I really had no expectations for this series whatsoever.  I have never been an Aquaman fan but I still had somewhat of an awareness of the character from the occasional issue I read.  This series as it stands at the moment is probably the strongest one going at DC (granted I don't read every single title.)  The writing here is superb with an excellent concept behind it and well paced action.  The characters themselves are also extremely well written, with fa...

The Good: I love the watercolor ephemeral look of the first page. It sets such a heartwarming calming tone that constrasts greatly with the hardened scowl Aquaman wears now, and the dialogue segues right into the story excellently. We get some offhand dialogue from a nature doccumentary which really adds to the deeper complexity of The Trench. They could very easily be a flat and blank threat, but Aquaman realizes that they could just be trying to survive. He killed a few without remorse, but in...
