Ever since the concept of Aquaman wielding zombie sharks to consume Atlantean soldiers... I've been crazed to see Geoff Johns and Ivan Reis take on Aquaman. Yes, we had it during Brightest Day... but what I was waiting for was that first issue buzz, holding a new beginning in my hands. It was a long wait, but I finally got that tingling sensation and so much more. Aquaman is back, and he might just be one of the coolest heroes ever.
Good
One rather nice feature of this book was the level of accessibility it presented. A few other books had made it into my recommendation pile for new readers... but as soon as I finished this book, I rushed back into the shop to buy two additional copies, one who began his comic reading career with Geoff's Flash and Flashpoint and another who has never opened the pages of a comic book before. In both cases, they raved in response to this comic book, incredibly excited for more. I honestly thought that the completely new reader would never be compelled to join the ranks of the comic book community, so this is some rather high praise. Now that I've covered their reaction, I'll return to my own. I spent most of the issue with a big goofy grin splayed across my face, from the epic level of badass attained by Aquaman to the absolutely exemplary artistic talents of Ivan Reis and back to Geoff's wit and humor that peppered the issue in just the right rhythm. I can only hope that this is the first sign of many good things to come from this volume, hopefully elevating the character in the same manner this team managed to in their collaboration on Green Lantern.
Bad
For yet another time this month, I have no negatives observations of this title.
Next Issue
Not only am I back for the next issue, so are at least two new readers. As soon as reprints come out, I'll be passing them out to more new readers as well, hooking (oh come now, I had to) even more new readers.
Overall
5 out of 5 Stars!
Beautifully written and drawn, I have and shall continue to highly recommend this book to any curious reader.
