First
This is by far my favorite Aquaman series ever, but I always thought it started out lackluster in the first issue. I reread it today and I noticed things I never did before. First of all I remembered all the first issues of Aquaman I read before this. With the exception of his first issue from his first series (that I have not been able to read) none of the first issues were this good. That is counting all the mini-series as well. Dull, dull, dull. That is most likely why they were short lived.
Now, I'm reading this one and I am not board. There is not a lot of action but there are the creepy corpses floating from a destroyed U.S. Navel Sub. There is also this statement by Garth that says how he is sick of the brooding, Aquaman and that it is time for him to get over it. I did not get it at the time but I think this is Peter David saying this is not going to be the Aquaman we have seen for the last fifteen to twenty years. I could be wrong but Aquaman went from from being a dud in my book to an awesome hero.
I also have to point out a cookie that I noticed and loved. Check out the number on the helicopter it is 3MTA3. This is the same number on the tail of the passenger plane on the cover of the Beastie Boys first album and it says eat me backwards. I'm not sure if it was a Beastie Boy reference but, I want to think it is.
Overall this was an above average book that is going to kick off the best version of Aquaman ever. I highly recommend this series. Please read the books from this series. I gave the book three-and-a-half stars.
