Aquagirl is an incarnation of four separate fictional characters in the DC Comics Universe. Aquagirl first appeared in November 1959 in the Adventure Comics (Volume 1) issue #226. Edit
Lisa Morel (1959-1959)
Was the first Aquagirl, appearing in 1959. She was amongst several Atlantean children who were born incapable of breathing underwater. To save them, they were sealed in watertight lifeboats and sent to the surface to live among humans. Lisa was adopted by the human scientist Hugo Morel and his wife.
When Aquaman was threatened, her Atlantean powers stirred and constructing a costume identical to his, took on the mantle of "Aquagirl" and battled alongside him.
Unfortunately, her newfound powers were fleeting, and she lost them, never to regain them again. She is not considered to have been effective as Aquagirl in modern continuity.
Selena (1963-1963)
Selena first appeared as Aquagirl in World's Finest Comics #133 (May 1963) was a Poseidonis teenager who paired with Aquaman under the name "Aqua-Girl." However, as with Lisa Morel, Selena appeared only in this issue and was never seen again. She is also not considered to have been effective as Aqua-Girl in modern continuity.
Tula (1967-1985)
Considered by most to be the first Aquagirl, Tula was found and adopted by one of the royal families of Atlantis soon after the death of her parents. She was soon awarded the title, Princess of Poseidonis. When she was fifteen years old, she met up with Tempest, who immediately calls her “Aquachick.” (Hey…this is the sixties, remember?) Aquagirl was a regular supporting cast member in the Aquaman strip for several years, though generally doing little more than babysitting Aquaman's son. Tula dropped out of sight in the mid-1970s.
Tula has been seen assisting Tempest and the Teen Titans. She took the name Aquagirl to honor her boyfriend as well as Aquaman. When Aquaman left his throne to search for his then-missing wife Mera, Narkran took over Atlantis as a dictator. His reign fell only when Tula lead a rebellion against him. Tula continued her life as it had been after this, resuming her romance with Garth (Tempest) when he returned to Atlantis. She continued to be an ally to Garth and the Teen Titans, ultimately becoming an honorary member. She and Garth aided the Titans in bringing down H.I.V.E. once and for all.
Seven years later (Tales of the Teen Titans #45, Aug. 1984) Tempest and Aquagirl turned up on the doorstep of Titans Tower, near death after having attempted to stop the invasion of Atlantis by the criminal organization H.I.V.E. Accompanied by the Teen Titans, the youths infiltrated H.I.V.E. and destroyed their operation.
Aquagirl was part of the group of super-heroes who traveled to Earth-Four to battle Brainiac's battalion of super-villains. There, she found herself in the wake of Chemo's acid pollution of the ocean as she battled the Shark, and died a slow death as the poison infiltrated her system.
Years later, after Garth trained with the ancient mage Atlan and received augmented powers, a woman claiming to be Tula entered his life. In truth, it was a doppelganger created by the villainous Slizzath - part of an elaborate plan to siphon Garth's mystical energies for his own dark purposes. Garth saw through the ruse and was able to defeat Slizzath, and once and for all gain a sense of closure about Tula's death. It was also at this time that Garth adopted a new identity as Tempest. It all happened in Tempest #1-4 (1996).
Tula shows up in Teen Titans (vol. 3) issues #30 and #31, after being brought back to life by Brother Blood to fight against the Teen Titans. After a pitched battle, Kid Eternity is able to lay the deceased Tula back to rest.
Lorena Marquez (2004-current)
A young woman from San Diego who was one of thousands to find themselves submerged when the city was torn apart by an earthquake. Like many of the survivors, she found she could breathe underwater thanks to the experiments of a man named Geist.
With the help of Lorena, Aquaman sought out the remaining survivors of San Diego. They located a number of survivors as well as the man responsible for their condition: a scientist named Geist. Geist used Aquaman's DNA to introduce a genetic anomaly into the San Diego water supply. This self-replicating strand of DNA converted the populace's respiratory, auditory, ocular and muscular systems to a more marine-based model. This experiment was done in the name of science - Geist's effort to save humanity from the upcoming global warming. Geist was financed by a mysterious corporate benefactor , whose identity remains a mystery. The corporation had caused the quake which sunk San Diego to test the results of Geist's' experiments.
When Ocean Master used mystical means to switch lives with Aquaman, Lorena assumed the role of Aquagirl in the new twisted reality. After Aquaman exposed his scheme, Lorena decided to keep the costume she had acquired. She had, in essence, become the new Aquagirl.
Aquagirl joined the Teen Titans for a short time, but later quit. The group remained in constant disorder until Robin returned and reorganized the Titans into a cohesive team.
In the "Titans Tomorrow" future storyline, Lorena has telepathic powers, but whether or not Lorena will develop these abilities in the present remains to be seen.
Aquagirl is a member of the Teen Titans during the events of 52. She assisted Steel in launching an attack on Lexcorp when Natasha was captured by Luthor.
Since the destruction of Atlantis, her whereabouts have mostly been unknown, but she did briefly join up with the Teen Titans (Volume 3) in the turbulent year that followed. In Teen Titans #34 Lorena is shown at Titans Tower arguing with Hawk.
Merina (2000-????)
In the DC Animated Universe there is no Aquagirl in the present, however there is one roughly thirty years in the future. This Aquagirl is the daughter of Aquaman and a member of the Justice League Unlimited. This Aquagirl demonstrates powers much like her father but also forms of water and ice control. She appeared in The Call Pts. 1 and 2 (Batman Beyond) and in a dream sequence from Epilouge (Justice League Unlimited), she was voiced by Jodi Benson both times.
