Aphrodite IX is a science fiction comic set on Earth in the far future. What remains of humanity is divided into two groups, one a rigid society of cyborgs, the other a group of genetically modified rebels who have a benevolent monarchy.

Ever since Image Comics first started it always seemed to put style over substance. The artwork of most of their titles is amazing, especially when it comes to showcasing tech and quality cheesecake. As you can probably guess by the title of this comic, and the cover art, in 20 years it doesn't seem like Image Comics has evolved much. It still seems to be all about 'image'. So, in other words, the art is fantastic. Stjepan Sejic makes amazing painted landscapes and beautiful, sexy poses of the action heroine protagonist.

The story on the other hand, is another matter. It seems to be another retread of the good, Earth-loving noble savages, complete with tattoos and braided hair, against the mechanized infantry of a technological society (yes, Avatar the comic). Into this world we get Aphrodite IX, a remote controlled, seduce-and-kill, genetically modified, cyborg, hot chick with green hair. She has no memory of where she came from, and predictably is befriended by the savages, while her controller falls in with the cyborgs - who will she betray?

Borrowing a ton from the likes of Dragonriders of Pern and, well, frankly, a ton of other science fiction and fantasy books and movies, Aphrodite IX doesn't have much new to offer - but if you want pretty girls with sci-fi guns, you've come to the right place.

The Good:Stjepan Sejic is one of the best artists working on comics at the moment and he proves it here. The art is completely and utterly stunning. Matt Hawkins re-interpretation of Aphrodite IX is pretty good and the dialogue is solid and interesting. All in all this was well above average and a very good way to kick off the new series. Normally I don't post pic's in reviews to prevent spoilers but if you are on the fence about this issue just take one look at this art and tell me its not gorg...
