Coming to us from Variety, Edgar Wright, director of the films Scott Pilgrim vs The World and Shaun of the Dead, has left directing the upcoming 2015 Ant-Man film. In a statement made by both Marvel and Wright, they stated he parted ways due to "differences in their vision of the film.”

Marvel already has another director lined up but has yet to publicly announce who it is yet. Wright was also the co-writer of the film's script, along with Joe Cornish.

This is a big surprise, especially since Wright had been attached to this project since 2006 and has given numerous updates at San Diego Comic Con, every year, keeping Ant-Man and Marvel movie fans in the loop. Even though there is a change in directors, the film is still slated to come out on July 17th, 2015.

The film will star Paul Rudd, Michael Douglas and Evangeline, with Corey Stoll, Michael Pena and Patrick Wilson.

Here's the official statement:

Marvel and Edgar Wright jointly announced today that the studio and director have parted ways on Ant-Man due to differences in their vision of the film. The decision to move on is amicable and does not impact the release date on July 17, 2015. A new director will be announced shortly.

We'll keep you updated as more develops.

This and Michael Douglas has left me very disappointed.

Not sure I look forward to this movie anymore. Sadly :/

This makes me upset.

Well hopefully they get Shane Black or Bret Ratner.

Damn. My interest in the film has dipped significantly.

I'll admit, this worries me a little. The fact that he and Marvel are having "differences in their vision of the film" worries me as to what Marvel wants to do with the film that would cause Wright to leave after being attached to the movie for so long.

This suuuuuuucks. My interest level in this movie just plummeted to almost zero.

I guess DC's not the only one that makes overbearing editorial decisions.

Infinite sadness.

Hopefully this means this film will now be about Hank Pym.

The cast/source material had me intrigued but Edgar Wright as the director was what pushed this into must-see territory for me. Bummed but still willing to give it a shot.

This. Probably not but rather this.

That sucks, but I don't know if Edgar Wright was a perfect choice in the first place, but he would've made it fun regardless.

#19 Posted by Saint_Wildcard (11491 posts) - - Show Bio

Maybe he wanted to put in the boxing match Hank had with his wife and Marvel wouldn't let him

Like I said before, not really interested on this film anymore. Even though I suppose it could turn out well in the end, as it stands right now I'm no longer looking forward to it.

Hmmm...not sure how I feel about this. I mean, I really didn't like the direction the film was going in, but now I can't help but feel...let down?

I mean, just how far into production were they? What now? Redo the whole thing?

Hopefully this means this film will now be about Hank Pym.

Agreed

This is kind of a bummer. I was really looking forward to seeing my favorite director make a movie about my favorite superhero. Hopefully they find someone just as great to fill the role.

I'm sure they'll find a suitable replacement, didn't like his last 2 movies anyway.

#26 Posted by ccraft (5423 posts) - - Show Bio

Since 2006? Dang, I didn't hear about an Ant Man movie but like 6 months ago... I liked SotD, but hated SPvtW, I liked the comics better. I'm sure they'll find someone just as good to direct Ant Man.

Hank isn't the lead for that reason IIRC

I heard that too, but maybe he just wanted to mention it. Maybe Hank was trying to redeem himself or something. But Im just spit balling.

Surprised how little this bothers me. Wright had a very specific vision for this movie, it was shaping up to be an oddball fun film like his last few the only problem with that from a business side is its hard to bring in casual movie goers with his vision.

I love most of Wrights movies, but not one has been a box office success and maybe Marvel did not want to risk a 200 million dollar budget on a fun corky strange vision of their character that may or may not capture audiences.

#29 Posted by Pizzaman (645 posts) - - Show Bio

Eh. Wasn't that interested since they announced they were starting with Scott Lang instead of Pym.

Sad news for the film, but good for him.

........bollocks.

#33 Posted by CaptainHoopla (1121 posts) - - Show Bio

This is probably good news. Marvel seems to know what they want and there is no denying their incredible track with their movies. If they decided he wasn't going to cut it, this is most likely for the best.

I love Edgar Wright and his movies, but it feels like I've been hearing about this with little to no progress for forever now so maybe this is for the best.

Don't worry they will still pump out this movie in no time. Gotta keep that money flowin.

MAKE IT SO!

#41 Edited by FearTheLiving (3710 posts) - - Show Bio

Seriously I was okay with Pym being old specifically because Edgar Wright was behind the movie but if he's no longer attached that decision needs to be changed.

Agreed. I wasn't certain about this movie to begin with. I'm going to wait until they release footage before I make up my mind... however I'm not looking forward to it.

@themanintheshoe: lol couldnt care less about micheal douglass hes nothing special when i comes to comedy which is a key element to marvels consistent tone

#44 Posted by ArtisticNeedham (2284 posts) - - Show Bio

Well if he had a vision for the film and Marvel had a different vision and the parted ways and no one was forced then I guess its all OK. Maybe his vision wouldn't have fit with the rest of the Avengers movie universe. Maybe he wanted to do something more out there, or maybe not.

#45 Posted by SilverPool (1888 posts) - - Show Bio

Damn. My interest in the film has dipped significantly.

Yeah... mine is gone now

#46 Posted by SirSparkington (342 posts) - - Show Bio

This reminds of Jon Favreau leaving Iron Man after #2. I wouldn't be surprised if it was the same reasons, those being that Marvel is too controlling of the individual films and what occurs in them because of the cinematic universe.

#47 Posted by ForeverMan (150 posts) - - Show Bio

I know this is internet heresy but I'm going to reserve judgment.

Marvel's movie division has been doing a good job lately, and clearly they saw something developing that they didn't think would work. Still, hardly encouraging news overall unless you actively dislike Edgar Wright.

This movie isn't going to work.

#49 Posted by NukeA6 (499 posts) - - Show Bio

I thought Marvel was better than this. Ant Man better not end up being some lame build up to another movie like Thor 2 was.

Aw that's too bad, I thought the movie was shaping up nicely. Great cast, interesting story, some universe building.
