    Review: Annihilators

    The Annihilators battle... things...

It's no secret that I am not the biggest fan of the Marvel's cosmic universe, aside from Silver Surfer. I am very unfamiliar with the characters, and I tend to feel a bit lost when reading. However, just because I don't know anything about a series or its characters, that doesn't mean I shouldn't take a dive into a new series. So, this review is for the common man! The person who doesn't normally read Marvel's cosmic wonders! That being said, time to review!

    The Good

I believe this is the first time I loved the back-up story more than the main story in an issue. The Rocket Raccoon and Groot story is the best thing to come out of this book. Timothy Green II's art really pops on the page, and he has a great style. The difference between the art on the main story and the back up is night and day. The story is over-the-top, humorous, and a lot of fun. I may not be familiar with either of these characters, but it didn't matter to me since everything else about the story was top notch.

    The Bad

This book made me feel dumb and confused. My unfamiliarity with this side of Marvel left me scratching my head since, even with the recap page in the front of the book, I had no real idea what was going on through all the scientific terminology. As a new reader, I felt like this story was going over my head just because it could. One thing that really bugged me was how Silver Surfer was written. He's usually calm and collected, but he comes a little more emotional and a lot more sassy than normal. Needless to say, it didn't feel like Silver Surfer. I was not a fan of the art on the first story as well. It felt a bit bland, and it would have popped more with more dynamic coloring.

    The Verdict

We have a great back-up story, and a main story that left me in the dark that I don't have anything really great to say about. Even though I know little to nothing about these characters, I'd still read a Rocket Raccoon/Groot series because it is written so reader friendly. Annihilators, on the other hand, makes you feel bad as you flip through it because you're not part of group of people who understand these characters. I do not recommend this book for new readers; however, I'm sure fans of the cosmic world of Marvel will enjoy this book because it is well-written. For the rest of us, it's a borrow just for the back-up story.

It's sad that the Rocket and Groot story line is the best out of this series and while the Space Knights and Dire Wraiths are written well. I hate the redrend on Quasar's character so much. I get what DnA are doing with him but they could have done it so much better. Which makes me even more upset because Heroes for Hire is great and the upcoming work for New Mutants looks fantastic.

    Common man, schmommon man... :)

I somewhat disagree on the assessment of the Surfer. Some of his compassion came through and him calling out the matriarch of Galador was right on. What didn't fit to me was his actions. It's not like him to just stand around and he's not much of a team player. He would have went in right after Dredd. Also, DNA seem to want him to speak in the third person, which I may have to beat someone up over.

I will agree that this is probably a tough read for someone who doesn't know the characters. Also, although this is a double issue, the price tag is a little high to attract those new readers in the first place. This is only one of two Marvel cosmic minis going right now, with no ongoings to speak of. It's a shame really.

I am one of the few people who loved SOME of the Marvel Cosmic universe.  I nearly cried real tears when I realized they were destroying Guardians of the Galaxy.  It was one of the books I always opened and read the moment I got home.   I cussed Marvel up down and side ways and every now and then I cuss them out again.

Groot and Rocket Raccoon are  great fun so it doesn't surprise me that you'd like them better than Annihilators.  The characters in Annihilators are not fun not really.  For me I will probably stick it out hoping a door might open for the return of some of my fun whacky  Guardians.

Thanks for the review, I appreciate your comments on the book.

The newest review I'm writing is going to get comments like "then why did you read it idiot?" Preparing for angry comic fans.

The second issue of DnA's two-in-one cosmic limited series tries to recapture some of the magic that made the Annihilation Era such a success but ultimately shows that the writing team may have nothing left to say when it comes to Marvel's cosmic franchise. The Spaceknights and Dire Wraiths are the obscure characters lifted up from limbo and made a major part of the story here. It is nothing new to bring out characters and concepts not scene for awhile in an attempt to breathe new life into them....
