Annihilation Conquest

Annihilation Conquest is a comic book story arc that appeared first in Annihilation Conquest: Prologue #1

Many empires are still rebuilding in the wake of the Annihilation, while others lay in ruins. Enemies new and old rise up in this opportunistic moment to take control of entire empires. Edit

Background

Led by Annihilus, the Annihilation Wave spread throughout space. Annihilus believed that our universe was growing while The Negative Zone was shrinking. He saw this encroaching upon Negative Zone space as an invasion of his territory by our universe, and saw conquest and destruction as his only option. Composed of Annihilus' Negative Zone armies, the Wave spread and threatened to destroy everything in its path. Leading the remaining Kree armies, several of the universes greatest heroes sought to put an end to Annihilus' path of destruction. Opposing forces included Drax The Destroyer, Nova, Ronan, Gamora, Phyla, Moondragon, and Quasar. Also opposing the wave were Galactus as well as current and former Heralds of Galactus: Stardust, Air-Walker, Terrax, Morg, Firelord, and Red Shift.

Along the way Thanos joined Annihilus cause, but only out of curiosity of how it would affect the outcome. Annihilus began by trying to capture the heralds of Galactus to study the Power Cosmic that they possessed, drawing them as well as their former master into the war. Recently freed from the prison Galactus had put them in long ago, Aegis and Tenebrous were able to defeat Galactus and the Silver Surfer. With Galactus and the Surfer incapacitated, Thanos was able to study Galactus' technology and biology to design equipment which would harness the Power Cosmic which Galactus' body collected when he consumed planets. Keeping Galactus weak by starving his body of the cosmic energy required to sustain him, Galactus and the surfer were kept in a state of stasis while helping build up massive stores of Cosmic Energy. Thanos was able to transform Galactus' very body into a living weapon, generating blasts of cosmic energy powerful enough to destroy entire planets.

It was at this point when a captured Moondragon had read Annihilus' mind and informed Thanos that Annihilus planned not only for conquest, but the destruction of everything in all Universe so that he may rule over everything that is (which is nothing). Knowing of the impending treachery, Thanos prepared to activate a fail-safe which was keyed into his own power level to release Galactus. Before Thanos was able to release Galactus, Drax ripped out Thanos' heart, killing him. After freeing the Silver Surfer, the Surfer was able to generate enough energy to break Galactus' bonds. Freed from Annihilus, Galactus went on a rampage destroying all of the Annihilation Wave forces in the vacinity.

With his forces crippled, Annihilus was confronted by Phyla, Quill, and Nova. With the Nova Corps destroyed and the power of the entire Corps at his disposal, Nova was still not as powerful as Annihilus who now possessed Quasar's Quantum Bands. Phyla attempted to prevent Nova's death and grabbed Annihilus' arms, touching the Quantum Bands. Annihilus easily threw Phyla away, but offered an alternate choice the Quantum Bands chose Phyla and left Annihilus for her. Weakened, Nova killed Annihilus by reaching inside his throat and ripping out his insides.

In the wake of the Annihilation, there is much to rebuild. The once mighty Kree empire is left with its defenses crippled, and the Supreme Intelligence is now dead. The Kree now fall under the leadership of Ronin. Phyla-Vell now possesses the Quantum Bands and has taken over Wendell Vaughn's place as the new Quasar. The Silver Surfer has become Galactus' herald once again along with Stardust, both being needed to quench Galactus' now insatiable hunger. Quill is in charge of helping to rebuild the Kree defense networks. Choosing to forgo rebuilding the Nova Corps until later, Richard Rider still possesses the full power of the Nova Corps and is flying from world to world attempting to answer distress calls from all corners of the universe. Despite Annihilus' death his remaining broken forces are now spread throughout the galaxy. Many generals from the Annihilation Wave are now ruling over their own planets as a result of the treaty struck between Ronan's Kree empire and the remainder of Annihilus' army. Seeking retribution, Terrax flies between planets controlled by Annihilus' officers to put them out of power.

(Spoilers)

A group of mercenaries stands outside the temple of the Priests of Pama, a pacifist organization on an outworld planet. Balking at the requests of the robed monks for them to leave, one of the monks reveals herself to be Phyla-Vell, the new Quasar. As she identifies the temple as being under her protection, the band of mercinaries attacks. Using the Quantum-bands she stole from Annihilus, Phyla rushes into battle. As she is fighting she hears a strange voice in her head as Moondragon jumps in to assist. The pair make waste of the would-be pillagers quickly, and Quasar thanks Moondragon for the assist.

Heading back into the temple she informs the monk, to his surprise, that the mercenaries are to be taken in and given shelter and provisions. Times are hard and violent for many planets in the wake of the Annihilation wave and she would rather educate the misfortunate rather than condemn them for the crimes which they commit out of desperation.

Back in the temple Phyla confides in Moondragon that she is no where near experienced enough with the Quantum-Bands. The wielder must posses immense concentration and imagination. She also worries that despite all of her training she could never live up to the legacy of her father or brother, the first and second Captain Marvel. Phyla also mentions to Heather that she is concerned that they are wasting their potential assisting such small and depopulated outworld planets. Moondragon responds that their work is necessary for the rebuilding of the Kree empire as Hala and the Heartworld planets are being overseen by Ronan himself.

Meanwhile Peter Quill is on Hala working to repair the holes in Kree defenses made during the Annihilation. He describes his plans to Nova during a holo-communication on his way to greet a group of Galadorian space knights who's software may be able to upgrade the entire Kree defensive network, the only major defensive network left in the quadrant after the Annihilation. The Galadorians upload their software updates and a fleet of Kree Sentrys launch for a test demonstration watched by Ronin himself.

While Phyla is meditating she is interrupted by a strange voice in her head once more informing her that there is a great danger to her and that she is the only one that can find the one to prevent a great threat to the Kree. As she is describing what happened to Moondragon a rogue Kree Sentry destroys the wall of the temple. Phyla is able to take out the Sentry with a shockwave from the Quantum-bands targeted at the rogue machine.

Above Hala the Kree Sentrys begin scrambling over an intruder that doesn't exist and even take out a Kree ship in orbit around the planet. There is an incompatibility between the network and the programming that was just uploaded. The Galadorians inform him that there was not programming incompatibility before turning on him and commencing fire upon the Kree guards. Looking into the head Galadorian's eyes he sees a strange machinery. He then looks up to see all of the Kree sentrys flying overhead with the same mechanical infection.

After ravaging the city with destruction the Sentrys begin massing together over the city's main power generator and even begin fusing together into a tower-something that the Kree technology in the sentrys shouldn't even be able to do. The tower sends out a massive surge of energy that tears straight through a Kree destroyer and catches the attention of Phyla and Moondragon. Following the ripples caused by the energy surge Phyla finds a wall of energy that is surrounding all of Kree space. The Quantum-bands tell her that whatever is causing this energy dome has put the entire area of space out of phase with the rest of the universe so that nothing can get in or out--something that not even Galactus has the power to do.

On Hala the same t-o infection that took over the Galadorians begins to spread to all of the Kree on the planet as well. Peter Quill is pleased to see that the Kree under his command are coming back to help him, however they are revealed to have caught to the same mystery infection as everything else. As creatures begin to come free of the Kree sentry tower a voice booms to the people of Hala that they will not be harmed so long as they submit and that rather than conquest they seek to preserve the future of the Kree. The figure identifies itself as the return of the Phalanx and that it has finally completed its conquest.

The Phalanx Has Returned!
