This page covers the DC comicbook hero Animal Man also known as Buddy , A-Man . If this is not the page you were looking for check here.

A happy go lucky hero that can emulate the powers of any animal on earth.

Buddy Baker was a professional stuntman who was walking not to far from his house one night in the woods nearby. He was astonished when he discovered an extraterrestrial spacecraft crash land nearby. Investigating the site, he found himself bathed in a unique radiation which altered his body forever. Although he would not understand it until many years later, the strange radiation had grafted the morphogenetic field, or "Red", to his body's genetic structure, granting him the ability to mimic the powers of any animal within his vicinity.

The next day, when some animals from a nearby school escaped, he discovered his new powers, and with much delight, easily captured and returned the animals to their rightful places. After several short adventures, Buddy decided to fashion himself a special costume and began using the name Animal Man. Again and again Buddy's abilities came in handy when solving problems, and although he did not originally intend to use his animal-adapting powers to fight crime, he nevertheless was repeatedly drawn into battle.

Buddy later married Ellen Frazier and retired his Animal Man identity for several years, while continuing to work in the movies. Buddy and Ellen now have two children, Cliff and Maxin, and to date, neither has shown any latent powers of their own. A few years later after retiring, he was approached by a mysterious being known only as the Immortal Man. He once again donned his Animal Man uniform and joined the Immortal Man and several other semiretired adventurers in an organization called the Forgotten Heroes.

Later desiring fame and wishing to join the Justice League, Buddy was eventually granted entrance into the Justice League Europe. He also learned of the Pre-Crisis multiverse and discovered he was a fictional character, and even met Grant Morrison, the callous "god" who controlled his life.
