Three Issues in and I just cannot get out!
I have always been a fan of Animal Man, couple years back I purchased Grant Morrison's run on Animal Man and became an avid fan of the character. Since the start of the 52, Animal Man has been sort of a back up on my pull list until recently. I feel that the 52 was the best thing to happen to the character since Morrison's run, under the helm of Jeff Lemire, I feel like I have fallen in love all over again with the character. In many ways I feel what Lemire has done was continue Morrison's run (granted at the same time made it his own). One possible reason as to why I feel Animal Man has been a blast for me is that while he is an awesome character, his obscurity has kept him fresh and new. books like Batman or Superman (both of whom I enjoy) have a library of stories that have clearly defined the character over the years, the only problem is there is only so much one can do with them, With Animal Man the possibilities are quite exciting. In this issue the mysterious "Red" sort of a counterpart to swamp thing's "green" is being threatened by an evil force. The Red and Animal Man and his daughter's role is explained within this issue. To say the very least i am disturbed by Foreman's art, but in a good way, the abstraction of the human form and the edginess of the imagery really sets Animal Man apart from all the other 52 books. I feel that Foreman's art lends a lot to Lemire's story the two work in near perfect unison. If anything at all Animal Man so far has accomplished a lot more to adding to the character's mythos than many of the other titles in the 52.While i understand money's tight nowdays I would highly suggest this title to anyone who is looking for storytelling at it's best. 5/5
