The Angels are creatures born from Adam, and are shown to be capable of taking on many different forms, from taller then a mountain to the size of a microorganism. There are only two truly physical characteristic which define an Angel: The ability to generate a physical AT Field Outside of their body, and their registering as blood on an energy scan. Both of these characteristics are commonly mentioned by the members of NERV.

The angels are limited t only being able to appear one at a time, and only appear in a certain sequence, described in the Dead Sea Scrolls held By SEELE.

There are 17 Angels.

Events Before the Series

Creation

The majority of The Angels were created at the beginning of earth, when Adam and Lilith, The first two Angels, landed on earth. Adam and Lilith then awoke, and the two separated, Adam creating the angels and Lilith creating the Lilim (humanity). The Nature of this separation, though, is questioning, as multiple different reasons are stated for this separation. One reason is that the Angels ate the Fruit from the tree of Life, giving them immortality and an unbelievable amount of power, and the Lilim ate from the Tree of Knowledge, giving them the ability to create and adapt to know situations. . The Angels then disappeared, and Adam became frozen down in the Antarctic.

Adam's Awakening

In 2000 AD, adam was discovered in Antarctica still encased in the White Moon, the vehicle he used to arrive on earth. A group investigating this strange creature then decided to begin a contact experiment using the Lance of Longinus. The Lance was brought to Antarctica, and was used to open the White Moon, but, unbeknownst to the researchers, the Lance was created for Adam, and the meeting of the two energies resulting in a mass release, melting most of Antarctica, and flooding many cities of the world.

Features of the Angels

The Core: The Angel's core is like the heart of the Angels, any damage done to it will be felt by the towering monsters. The only way to kill an Angel is to attack the core with either a progressive knife or enough power to cause significant damage.

The core in the Neon Genesis Evangelion: Gakuen Datenroku is very similar to the core in the normal Neon Genesis Evangelion Manga. However, these cores are specifically stated to be carrying the soul of the Angel, and they can pass from one body to another through the insertion of the core into a new body. The Childrens job is to remove and deactivate the core.

AT Field: The Absolute Terror Field (from here on referred to as the AT field) is a powerful force field produced by all of the Angels. The only thing that is capable of penetrating an AT field are other creatures related to the Angels (the Evangelion, the Lance of Longinus, etc...). he AT field is one of the defining signs of the Angels. The AT field is also capable of being penetrated by an N2 bomb. However, the damage caused by an N2 bomb is not very significant, and is easily healed by the Angel.

However, the AT Field is revealed to be a much more complex then just a simple forcefield. The AT field is revealed to only be the barriers that seperate all of humanity. They are, as stated by Kaworu Nagisa, the "Light of the Soul", the only thing that keeps us as individuals and able to form seperate thoughts and opinions. When these AT Fields are nullified, (as shown during Third Impact) then the body loses all of its ability to sustain as a seperate entity, and the human whose loses its AT Field will then revert to a state of LCL.
