A group of goddesses decided to create a race of women that would represent and hold their ideas. Most of the gods disagreed, but the goddesses went ahead with it, taking souls from women who had been murdered by men. The clay from the bottom of a lake in Greece was their physical shape, and the souls were then imbued into them, the first one being Hippolyta. The second was Antiope, who was Hippolyta's sister. They created their city of Themyscira and lived there until Hercules destroyed it, forcing them to rebuild their city. Antiope left in rage, swearing to kill Hercules. Some Amazons joined her, but the majority stayed with Hippolyta. When they rebuilt their city, the Amazons also relocated and were given the task of protecting the island from the evils that lay beneath. Their island was very isolated. An Air Force officer named Diana Trevor crashed on the shores of Paradise Island. Shortly after her crash, the evils beneath were unleashed, and Trevor saved the Amazons by sacrificing her life, giving her the status of one of the greatest Amazon warriors. Hippolyta realized that the crash landing of Trevor meant that the shield that hid their island was growing weaker. She asked the gods if she could have a daughter, a super-soldier, that could fulfill their causes. The gods told her to make a baby out of clay, and the gods gave her life. She was named Diana, in honor of Trevor. She would later be known as Wonder Woman.

The Amazons have since had many adventures such as Circe's attack on the island and death of half the Amazons at the hands of Darkseid. Most recently, the Amazons have gone through the Infinite Crisis, battling cyborgs called the OMACs. To avoid the unneeded loss of many innocents, the Amazons prayed to the gods. The gods have delivered them somewhere else, unknown, leaving Wonder Woman as the only Amazon left.
