Definitely Not A CAT-astrophe
Hmm, coming up with cat puns is a little harder than I thought, so please forgive that horrible title. It was almost as painful for me to write as it was for you to read. Alright, on to the (hopefully) pain-free review.
With this issue, I can't help but be reminded of the TV show Burn Notice. (That's a compliment. I love the show.) The way Cat and company are handling the situation with Holopkov and the Kravinoffs seems to me like something straight out of Michael's post-spy life. As a result, this issue is full of fun moments and a blast to read just like the first two. I just wish there was a little more to it than that. I really like Black Cat, so while I'm happy to see her in her own series, I can't escape the feeling that this series exists for the sole purpose of existing. We don't really get much insight into the mind of Felicia. But perhaps that wasn't the point of this series and, instead, it was meant to just be a fun little yarn to enjoy. A goal it most certainly meets.
One thing that doesn't really work in my opinion, though, is the villain. He's just really creepy, but not in a good, villainous sort of way. He basically steals historical artifacts to try and impress/swoon a fifteen year old girl that he has the hots for. Ew!
My only other issue with this series is the covers. Don't get me wrong, they're great and I love them; they're simple yet stylish. But they're also misleading. In the cover of issues 2-4, we see Cat holding onto some valuable possession with Spider-Man's webbing trying to pull it away from her. Upon looking at them for the first time, I figured that the series was going to be another foray into Cat's back-n-forth alignment between hero and criminal with Spidey caught in the mix. Turns out, Peter shows up in about 1 to 2 pages max in these issues. In fact, the only cover not to follow this pattern is the one that has the most of Parker in it! I realize that this really isn't that big a deal and that covers aren't always an indication of content, but I was expecting (and excited for) something different than what I got here.
Oh well, it still turned out to be a good read.
