durakken's All-Star Western #3 - No News is Good; El Diablo, Part 2 review

    A brief lull

Art - The art of this book varies between over-detailed and over simplified while still over detailed and while ugly stylistically it is fairly average. There is a few problems with it like when the girl gets shot it looks like she gets shot in the head rather than in the back or something. The second story of El Diablo has consistent above average art in all aspects though.

Story - This is an anti-climatic necessary link issue that isn't all that great, but without it you'd lose the story. Even though it's not that great and it's not really doing anything it has more story than many other books. The scene from last issue finishes, then those guys sit and talk after the criminals have been brought down. They're attacked and all but Arkham and Jonah get shot and killed. Jonah stops these killers from getting away and now that that has been dealt with he continues on with what he came to Gotham to do. Arkham follows until Jonah threatens him. Jonah then is walking down the street and comes across a girl dying from getting shot which is the beginning of the next story and the end of this issue. While you expect the events to happen as they do and it's all rather predictable the events move the story along and position Jonah for the next story.

The second story of El Diablo is pretty lame in my opinion. After the build up last issue we see El Diablo bested and nearly killed somehow breaking the spell. The villain runs away and El Diablo then returns to his body and talks for the rest of the issue, pretty much correcting and threatening the one guy that is the criminal released from the prison out of empathy and to help fight the zombies.

Characterization - All the characters in this are well defined, but at the same time it's pretty easy to write a character that just wants everyone to go away and a character that wants to stick around and observe how Jonah's mind works. The two characters compliment each other as a comedy duo without either of them needing to be the comic as both are played the straight man.

Recommendation - This is another buy for this series, but only if you've bought the previous issues. If you buy this without the previous issues this one won't make any sense. This book is not as good as the previous, but that is due to the fact that it is a lull between stories and not because the story or writing is bad, so even though this is the worst of the series it is well done for what it is which is normally an average issue under the best of conditions, but this over comes that by seemingly shear force of will and momentum.

The Good: While the big bold text almost ruins an otherwise incredible use of white space, I look at it, and it forms Batman's head, with the guns as his ears. This works well with the great 'King of Hell' metaphor thing I talked so much about from the last issue. This issue comes at a very odd point. It's a transitional issue that contains the climax of the Gotham Ripper story, a hook that makes it clear that the Ripper was only a small part of the larger Religion of Crime leviathan, and the st...

The Story: Jonah Hex endures another attack while in Old Gotham shortly after bringing the Gotham Butcher to justice.  My Thoughts:This series started off with a bang and quickly became a favorite of mine. Justin Gray and Jimmy Palmiotti make such a great creative team and really know how to write Jonah Hex.  I don't want it to sound as if I thought this issue was horrible, but right now this series is feeling as if it would be better off read as a trade. I'm sort of losing that excitement I fel...
